To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA A. MANN, a cit1- zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbin Fixtures, of which the following is a speci cation.

The invention relates to plumbing fixtures, and in its preferred embodiment to wall bowl fixtures although certain features are applicable to use in connection with bowls of other types. The invention has for its primary objects; the provision of an improved packing arrangement suitable for all kinds of bowls and for use in bowls variously positioned. wherein an adjustment of the packing can be secured from the outer side of the bowl after it has been set; and the provision of improved means for securing the support of the bowl and relieving the strain upon the surface against which the bowl is positioned. Certain embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a partial side elevation and partial section to one embodiment, of the invention, Fig. 2 is a face view of the bearing shelf of the bowl, Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevation and. face views respectively of the collar employed for tightening the packing, Fig. 5 is a section on the line VV of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the thrust bearing member, Fig. 7 is a partial section and partial side elevation of a modified form of construction, and Fi s. 8 to 11 are details of certain features 0 construction employed in the apparatus as shown in Fig. 7.

1, 1 is a wall bowl havin the outlet disc arge passage 2 of the type illustrated in my Patent No. 1,132,953, issued March 3, 1915; 3 is the T of the soil pipe lying in the partition and connected to the bowl by means of the coupling 4; 5 is a thrust member screw threaded upon the couplin 4 and bearing against the inner face of tie bearing shcl 6 of the bowl; 6 is a collar screw threaded upon the coupling 4 and adapted to tighten the packing 7 between the coupling and the bowl; and 8 are tension members for securing the upper edge of the bearing shelf against the wall and for holding the hinge members 9 in position.

12 and 13 carried forwardly and engaging the inner face of the bearing shelf. In setting the bowl the member 5 is adjusted so that the ends of the arms come flush with the face of the partition, or slightly in ad vance thereof so that the thrust imposed by the bearing shelf 6" is taken by the bearing member 5 instead of by the partition. In order to maintain the bowl against movement away from the partition the bolts 14 are provided, such bolts extending through the slots 15 in the bearing shelf (Flg. 2) and being screw threaded at their inner ends into the holes 16 in the bearing member 5 (Fig. 6). The bowl may thus be clamped tightly against the

12 and 13 of the arms carried by the bearing member.

In order to still further support the hearing shelf 6, the tension bolts 8 are employed (Fig. 1) such bolts extending through the slots 17 (Fig. 2) in the bearing shelf and through a plate 18 (Fig. 1) mounted in the partition, such plate being preferably secured at its ends to the joists constituting the framework of the partition. The bolts 8 also serve the additional function of supporting the hinge members 9.

The means whereby a tight joint is secured between the coupling 4 and the bowl constitutes an important feature of my invention. noted that the eouplin enlargement in the en passage 2 and is surrounded by packin 7, which may be of any approved type. his packing is adjusted and tightened by means of the collar 6 which is screw threaded upon the coupling and has its edge in enga ement with the packing. As indicated in ig. 4 the periphery of the collar 6 is provided with a series of perforations 20, the purpose of which is to secure the rotary adjustment of the collar. This is accomplished from the outer side of the bowl after it has been set by means of a tool inserted into the slots 15 in the bearing shelf 6 (Fig. 2). By this means the packing may be made as tight as may be found desirable, and readjustment may be secured at any time without removing the bowl from its position. To accomplish this readjustment of the packing, it is of course necessary to remove the securing bolts 14 which pass through the slot 15 in extends into an of the discharge By reference to Fig. 1 it will be the shelf 6 and also through two of the holes 20 in the rim of the collar 6. The coupling 4 is preferably secured to the T 3 in the manner illustrated, involving the use of a screw connection and the' packing 21, but any other desired form of connection may be employed.

In the construction illustrated in Figs. 7 to 11, 1' is the bowl having the outlet 2, 3 is the outlet T; 4" is the coupling, and upon this coupling are mounted the thrust member 5 and the collar 6 for adjusting the packing. -This modified type of apparatus is shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 723,678, heretofore referred to.

The bearing member 5 is screw threaded upon the coupling 4 as in the other type of construction and is provided with forwardly extendin projections 12' and 13' (Fig. 9) adapte of the bearing shelf 6".

The collar 6 differs from the collar employed in the construction of Fig. 1 in that it is not screw threaded to the coupling 4, but is free to slide longitudinally thereof. The pressure of this collar 6 upon the packing to tighten it is secured by means of the studs 22 (Fig. 7), which studs extend through holes in the bearing shelf 6" and are screw threaded at their inner ends into the openings 23 carried by the arms 24 of the bearing member (Fig. 10).

The upper edge of the bearing shelf (3 is. in this form of apparatus, secured against movement away from thepartition by means of connections with the soil pipe, or with the vent pipe above the soil pipe, which arrangement in certain respects is prefer.- able to that'illustrated in Fig. 1 wherein the bolts 8 are supported from the partition instead of from the piping back of the partition. Details of this connecting mechanism are illustrated in Figs. 8 and 11. The plate 25 is secured to the vent pipe by means of the collar 26 made in two pieces. The ends of the plate 25 are slotted as indicated in 27 (Fig. 11) and into these slots fit the bolts 28, such bolts being machined on opposite sides to prevent their rotation in the slot 27. They are secured to the plate by means of the lock nuts 29 and 30 and are provided with hollow heads 31 adapted to bear against the bearing shelf 6" of the bowl. The shelf is secured by means of the studs 32 screw threaded into the heads 31, and supporting at their outer ends hinge members 9'. i

What I claim is:

1. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the wall, a wall bowl having a bee ring face opposing the wall, a horizontal coupling extending from the upright pipe into the how], a thrust member screw threaded on to engage the inner face the coupling and, adapted to en age the said bearin face of the bowl and ta e the thrust thereo packing surrounding the coupling where it enters the bowl, a collar adjustable longitudinally of the coupling for tightening the packing, and means whereby the collar may be ad usted from the front side of the bowl.

2. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the wall, a wall bowl having a bearing face opposing the wall, a horizontal coupling extending from the upright pipe into the owl, a thrust member screw threaded on the coupling and adapted to engage the said bearing face of the bowl and take the thrust thereof, and tension supporting means for the bowl above the said thrust member and independent thereof.

3. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the wall, a wall bowl havin a sup orting shelf extending above the aody o the bowl having a bearin face opposing the wall, a horizontal coup ing extending from the upright pipe into the bowl, a thrust member screw threaded on the coupling and adapted to engage the said bearing face of the bowl and take the thrust thereof, and tension supporting means extending through the said shelf and adapted to resist any movement of the shelf away from the wall, the said tension means lying above and independent of said thrust member.

4. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the Wallya. wall bowl havin a sup orting shelf extending above the body 0 the bowl, a horizontal coupling extending from the upright pipe into the bowl, a thrust member screw threaded on the couplin and adapted to engage the inner face 0 the bowl below the outlet pipe and take the thrust thereof, and tension supporting means engaging the said shelf and secured at their inner ends in the partition, the said tension means lying above and independent of said thrust member.

5. In combination in a plumbing fixture, a bowl provided with an outlet opening surrounded by a recess, a discharge pipe leading therefrom, packing lying in said recess surroundin the pipe where it enters the bowl, a col ar screw threaded on the pipe for tightening the packing, and "means whereby the said collar may be rotated from the outer side of the bowl.

6. In combination in a plumbing fixture, a bowl, adischarge pipe leading therefrom, packing surroundin the pipe where it enters the bowl, a co lar screw threaded on the pipe for compressing the packing between the collar and bowl, means whereby the said collar may be rotated from the outer side of the bowl, and a thrust bearing memher also screw threaded on the pipe and engagin the inner face of the bowl.

7. 1% combination in a plumbing fixture, a bowl, a discharge pipe leading therefrom, packing surroundin the pipe where it enters the bowl, a co ar screw threaded on the pipe for compressing the packing between the collar and bowl, means whereby the said collar may be rotated from the outer side of the bowl, a thrust bearing member also screw threaded on the pipe and engaging the inner face of the bowl, and screw connections between the bowl and thrust member for preventing movement of the bowl away from the thrust member.

8. In combination a plumbing fixture, a bowl having a bearing face, a discharge pipe leading therefrom, a thrust bearing member screw threaded on the pipe and engagin said face of the bowl around and space away from the discharge pipe, acking means adjustable independently of the bearing member, and screw connections between the bowl and thrust member for preventing movement of the bowl away from the thrust member.

9. In combination a plumbing fixture, a bowl having a bearing face, a discharge pipe leadin therefrom, a thrust bearing member screw hreaded on the pipe and engaging the said face of the bowl, screw connections between the bowl and thrust member, and packin means between the ipe and bowl adj usta le from the front si e of the bowl independent of the bearing member.

10. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the wall, a wall bowl having a bearing face, a horizontal coupling extending from the upright pipe into the bowl, a thrust member screw threaded on the cou ling and adapted to engage the said faceoi the bowl at a plurality of points surroundin the outlet and spaced away therefrom an take the thrust thereof, packing surrounding the coupling where it enters the bowl, a collar adjustable longitudinally of the coupling for tightening the packing, means whereby the collar may be adjusted from the front side of the bowl, and screw connections between the thrust member and the bowl.

11. In combination in a plumbing fixture for use upon a wall, an upright outlet pipe in the wall, a wall bowl, a horizontal coupling extending from the upright pipe into the bowl, a thrust member screw threaded on the couplin and adapted to engage the.

12. 13. n combination in a plumbing fixture, a bowl having a slotted bearing shelf, a discharge pipe leading therefrom, packing between the pipe and bowl, a collar screw threaded on the ipe for tightening the packing, a thrust earing member also screw threaded on the pipe and engaging the inner face of the bearing shelf, and screw connections between the thrust member and the shelf extending through the slots in the shelf, the said collar bein provided with means whereby it may e engaged and turned from the outer side of the bowl by a tool inserted through one of the slots in the said shelf.

14. In combination in a plumbin fixture, a bowl provided with an outlet, a iseharge pipe leading therefrom, a collar screwthreaded on the pipe where it enters the bowl, a packing around the pipe between the bowl and collar, and means whereby said collar may be rotated from the outer side of the bowl to cause it to a proach the bowl and compress the packing ying between the collar and bowl.
