To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. DowNING, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in presses.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient press adapted for forcing down the overlylng fiaps of a pasteboard box to cause said flaps to adhere to the glued surfaces of the underlying end flaps.
A further object is to provide a press in which the bed piece thereof is movable, preferablyY on a pivot, whereby the said bed piece can be swung out of normal position to a convenient position for the insertion over the bed piece of the article to be operated upon.
With the above and other incidental objects in view, the invention consists of the devices and parts, or the equivalents thereof, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the improved press, the handle of the eccentric cam being broken away, and the bed plate and its supporting post being shown in full line in their normal upright position, and by dotted lines as swung outwardly on the pivotal connection;
Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. l; and
ig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 4 indicates a base frame, which may be of any desirable form, preferably of rectangular form, the said Ybase having rising upwardly from each corner thereof uprights 5. The upper ends of said uprights are also connected by a rectangular frame 6, and eX- tending across and connected to the end bars of the upper frame is a cross bar 7. This cross bar is provided centrally with anopening 8, the'upper portion of said opening bein of greater diameter than the Vlower portlon thereof. Y Y
A tube 9 has its lower end fitting in `the enlarged portion of the opening 8, and rests on the shoulder 10 formed at the junction of the enlarged and narrowed portions of said openings. The upper portion of this tube is split, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, the split portion providing for the accommodation of an eccentric cam l1 provided with an operating handle 12, the said eccentric cam turning upon a pivot pin 13 which extends across the upper portion of the split and has its ends mounted in the members formed by the split. The cam 11 on one side of its curved edge is formed or provided with a stop shoulder 14, and on the opposite side of its curved edge is provided with another stop 15, which is preferably in the form of a stiff flat bar secured to the edge of the cam.
Within the tube 9 isadapted to reciprocate a plunger 16, provided with a depending stem 17, said stem carrying at its lower end a platen or follower. This platen or follower, preferably comprises two boards 18-18, which are held adjustably together by means of bolts 19-19 and wing nuts 20--2(), the latter engaging the upper threaded ends of the bolts, and adapted to be turned down against the upper side of the upper board. By this provision the thickness of the platen or follower can be either increased or decreased, when desired. The thickness is increased by inserting sheets of cardboard 21, or other material, between the boards, and the thickness is decreased, of course, by removing one or more of the sheets. As the limit of the extent of the downward throw of the follower is always the same, it of course frequently becomes necessary to increase the thickness of said follower so that it may adjust itself to Vdifferent thicknesses of pasteboard flaps at the end of the box to be operated upon.
Below the platen or follower is the bed 4piece or plate 22 of the press. It is one of the features of the invention to provide for a movable bed piece, which when moved out of its normal position permits of the ready insertion thereover of the pasteboard box, and which when moved in the opposite di- -rection to its normal position is in line to receive the downward thrust of the follower. To this end, I prefer to mount the bed piece upon the upper extremity of a post or bar 23. The lower end Vof this post or bar extends between two angle plates 2li-24, said angle plates extending transversely from one of the side pieces to the other of the bottom rectangular frame 4.
The end of the bar 2?) which lies between these two plates is mounted upon a pivot pin 25, the ends of said pivot pin being carried in the plates. The plates 2l are also connected by two stop pins ltt which serve respectively to limit the throw of the bar 23 and its bed piece both inwardly and outwardly. The upper end of the post 23 may be connected to the bed piece 22 in any desirable manner.
ln the drawing, I have shown two angle plates ill-27, their vertical members being secured to the post by bolts, and their horizontal members engaging the under side of the hed piece, and being secured thereto by means of bolts 2S-28 and wing nuts 29-29 turning on the lower threaded ends of said bolts.
In addition to the stop pins 2li-26, bracket arms 30-3U may be provided which are secured to and depend from the follower 18, and with which bracket arms the bed piece *22 of the press is adapted to contact, when said bed piece is in its normal. upright position.
The pasteboard box to be operated upon is shown in dotted lines in the three figures of the drawing, and is indicated by the numeral 31. It is desirable to provide means for supporting the lower end of the box, and as a convenient supporting means, I show two U-shaped brackets Sil-3Q, which are abutted against the post 23, and secured thereto by means of bolts 233-33, which conneet the transverse members of the Ushaped brackets. The arms of these U-shaped brackets extend outwardly in opposite directions and support the lower edge of the box.
The press is designed to be used for the purpose of pasting down the flaps at one end of a pastcboard box, such, for instance, as a box having two underlying aps and two overlying aps. Before the box is placed in the press, a coating of paste is applied to the upper surfaces of the underlying flaps. The post E23, and the bed piece connected thereto are first swung outwardly to the dotted lino position. shown in Fig. 1, and in which position the box is readily adjustable over the bed piece, with the end containing the flaps to be pasted resting upon said bod piece, and the lower edge of the box resting upon the arms of the U- shaped supporting bracket 32. The post 23 and its bed piece are now turned inwardly to normal full line position. The next step is to swing to the right and downwardlv the handle 12 of the eccentric cam 11. rl'lhis will cause the edge of the cam to operate upon the upper end of the plunger 16, and cause said plunger to be moved downwardly to the compressing position shown in Fig. Q, or in other words, the
plunger is moved downwardly to such an extent as to cause the follower to press against the overlying flaps of the pasteboard box, and thus cause the said overlying flaps to be brought firmly and tightly against the pasted surfaces of the underlying flaps. At the time the follower thus reaches its compressing position, the shoulder 14 of the eccentric cam engages against the upper end of the plunger 1G. The operatorie hand can now be removed from the handle 12, and the follower will remain in its compressing position, owing to the cam being beyond the dead center, until the handle is again manually moved upwardly and to the left. As the follower is thus releasably held locked in its compressing position, an operator may give his attention to another adjacent machine for the purpose of repeating the operation on that machine, and so on throughout a line of presses. After the compression is continued for a desired length of time, the operator raises the handle, and after the handle passes the dead center the movement of the handle and the cam will continue automatically, and the plunger 1G with its attached follower will also move upwardly, being caused to move upwardly by reason of the expansion of a coiled spring 33, which coiled spring is arranged within the tube 9 and surrounds the stem 17, being confined between the shoulder form at the lower end of the plunger and the shoulder 10. When the handle is swung to the position illustrated in Fig. l, further swinging thereof is prevented by reason of the stop arms 15 the lower ends of which strike against the plunger.

1. In a. press, the combination of a bed piece, a platen or follower, and means for adjust-ing the thickness of said follower.
2. In a press, the combination of a bed piece, a platen or follower consisting of two members, adapted to receive one or more layers of filling pieces therebetween, and means for clampingly holding the two members together.
3. In a press, the combination of a frame,
a platen or follower, means for moving said platen or follower, a. bed piece, and means permitting the movement of Said bed piece inwardly and outwardly, said bed piece when moved outwardly being in position to receive thereover the article to be operated upon, and when moved inwardly being in the line of movement of the follower.
4. In a press, the combination of a frame,
a platen or follower, means for moving said platen or follower, a` bed piece, means perlnltting movement of said bed ieee inwardly and outwardly, the said vd piece when moved outwardly being in position to receive thereover the article to be operated upon, and when moved inwardly being in the line of movement of the follower, and a stop for limiting the extent of the mward movement of the bed piece.
5. In a press, the combination of aframe, a platen or follower, means for moving said platen or follower, and a pivoted post carrying at its upper end a bed piece, said bed piece when the pivoted post is swung outwardly being in position to receive thereover the article to be operated upon, and when moved inwardly being in the line of movement of the follower.
6. In a press, the combination of a frame, a platen or follower, means for moving said platen or follower, a pivoted post carrying at its upper end a bed piece, said pivoted post when swung outwardly7 permitting of the adjustment of the article to be operated upon to the bed piece, and when moved inwardly being in the line of movement of the follower, and stop pins between which the pivoted post is adapted to swing.
7. In a press, the combination of a frame, a platen or follower, a post carrying at its upper end a bed piece, and arms extending from said post and adapted to act as supports for the lower edge of the article acted upon.
