IMPROVEMENT IN PULLEY-BLOCKS.

, Specification describing certain Improvements in Leading or Dock Blocks]7 invented by JOHN O. OOTTINGHAM, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvaina.

The nature of my invention relates to the eye, graduated jaws, and swivel-screw, so as to throw the block in any desired angle.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached and side View of the pulley. Fig. 3 is a detached and front view of the graduated jaws and swiveled screw.

B is an ordinary pulley-block, which should bc substantially constructed, pivoted in the usual manner by a bolt, b. Passing through the cheeks fromthe outside ofthe block is the pulley P, the body of said pulley being formed of any hard wood, and has secured on its sides two circularbrass plates, T and T. Theseplates are slightly beveled on their edges so as to conform to the curvature of the body of the pulley, and extend above it in order to properly sink the rope. Secured to the under part of the block B, by means of stra-ps S and S or otherwise, is au eye, E, provided with circular openings O and O1, secured to the eye E by means of the .bolt b1. Passing through the opening Ol is as'emicircular graduated jawpiece, J P, provided with a series of circular openings, O2, O3, &c., in order to receive the bolts b2 and b3, to regulate the play of the eye Il and give the block B the angle desired. On the under part of the jaw-piece J P is placed and secured a swiveled screw, S W, provided with an arm, A, for screwing the same in place. The bolts b, b1, b2, and b3 are secured properly in position by means of pins or nuts, as may be desired.

In placing the block in position and operating the same the screw S W is drawn down into the wood by turning the arm A until irmly secured. The pin E is now regulated, according to the angle desired to have the block, by means of the bolts b2 and b3 passing through openings O2, O3, 86o., as required. The fall or leading rope, passing over the pulley, will draw the block at any angle desired, according to the direction ofthe strain, and the pressure ot' the rope, whatever there should be, will come against the plates T and T', thus causing very little friction, no wear or tear upon the block itself, or no danger of chipping, breaking, or chaiing of the pulley.

Ifdesired, the eye, graduatedjaws, and swiveled screw for throwin gthe block to any desired angle can be reversed on the block-that is to say, the graduated jaws attached to the block, and the eye secured t-o the swiveled screw, and the same result obtained.

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of the graduating-jaw with a swivel-screw and the metallic-plated pulley or sheave, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The arrangement of the eye E, graduated jaws J P, openings O2, O3, &c., bolts b, b1, b2, and b3, swiveled screw S W, and arm A, so as to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
