To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM REAVELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain and reland, residing at Ipswich, in the county of Suffolk, England, have invented improvements in Air-Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a simple, compact and durable construction of two stage air compressorl in which provision is` made for ready dismantling, examinatlon and replacement of parts. y
ln a compressor according to the invention the first and second stage cylinders are spaced apart and oppositely arranged and a piston formed with two diameters extends into the opposed cylinders, its intermediate portion having xed in it a gudgeon pin the projecting Vend portions of which are provided with rods or straps which embrace eccentrics fixed upon a driving shaft. 1n a convenient arrangement the compressor coniprises a pedestal that forms the bottom end of the first stage cylinder and is fitted with suction and delivery valves therefor' and with bearings for the main shaft that is provided outside thepedestal with eccentrics, a fly wheel and a belt pulley or sprocket wheel; an outer casing or water jacket is bolted upon the pedestal and a cylinder liner which is formed with bores of different diameters at its upper and lower end portions and is adapted to separate the water jacket space into upper and lower compartments around the cylinders, is forced or otherwise secured in said casing and is closed by a coverl that forms the top end of the second stage cylinder and is fitted with suction and delivery valves therefor. The largerV diameter of the piston extends above the first stage cylinder bore and has passing transversely through its extended portion the'V gudgeon pin; the walls of the casing and the cylinder liner are slotted and the gudgeon pin ends extend freely through the slots to the exterior of the casing and there engage the rods or straps of the main shaft eccentrics. The water jacket spaces around the first and second stage cylinders are connected by a vertical passage formed in 'the cylinder liner and through this passage there extends a thin straight intercooler pipe which is entirely surrounded by water and connects the first stage delivery with the second stage suction.
The accompanying drawings illustrate recess l constituting the bottom end of the first stage cylinder and horizontal recesses connected to the recess l and fitted with suction valve 5 and delivery valve 6; 7 is the outer casing or water jacket securely bolted on the pedestal and holding down the cylinder liner 8 which is bored to form the first stage cylinder 9 and the second stage cylinder 10 each with a water acket space around it, joints being made between the flanges of the liner and the casing at 11, 11, 11b and 11. 12 is the cover forming the top end of and containing the suction valve 13 and the delivery valvell of the second lstage cylinder; air is led from the delivery valve 6 to the suction valve 13 through a thin tube 15 that passes freely through a passage formed in the metal of the liner 8 and serving as a connection between the water jacket spaces around the two cylinders. As the tube 15 is perfectly straight and free from bends fric-r tional losses and corrosion of thetube are reduced. 17 is the differential piston which is turned from the solid and tted with packing rings at 18 and 19 securely held by screwed junkrings 20 and 21 andcapable of being easily removed and replaced by fresh rings. 22 is the gudgeon pin which passes through the larger portion of the piston and is xed therein by a grub screw` 23; the casing 7 and the liner 8 are slotted at 7a and S so that the projecting portions of the gudgeon pin can move up and down freely Without being guided. y
The main shaft 3 has keyed upon it eo centrics 24, the straps 25 of which have short rods or arms which engage with and oscillate about the gudgeon pin ends, being held thereon by washers 26 and splitl pins 27.
The jacket spaces can be filled with water by removing the plug 28 and the water can d or power the piston 17 will be reciprocated by the eccentric straps; on the upstroke of the piston, air enters through t-he suction valve 5 the rst stage cylinder 9, the air inthe second stage cylinder 10 at the same time being discharged through the final delivery valve 1d to the reservoir; on the down-stroke, air in the first stage cylinder 9 is discharged through the delivery valve 6 and passes thence through the tube 15 and second stage suction valve 13 to the cylinder 10, the air being cooled during its passage through the tube 15 by the water which entirely surrounds it.
As will be seen from the drawings the compressor is very simple in construction and easily and quickly dismantled; it is consequently very suitable for use in the open or in places where it is likely to be somewhat roughly handled.
Although the arrangement shown is preferable, it might be modiiied by reversing the position of the first and second stage cylinders,
What l claim is 1. A two stage compressor comprising iirst and second stage cylinders spaced apart and oppositely arranged, a piston of two diameters working in said cylinders, a pedestal, an outer casing mounted on said pedestal, a liner having the cylinders formed in its opposite end portions and adapted to form water jacket spaces around the cylinders and between it and the casing, a connecting passage in said liner between said water jackets, the said casing and liner in- Y termediate of the cylinders being slotted and the pedestal constituting the end portion or the lower cylinder, suction and delivery valves or said lower cylinder located in said pedestal, a cover for the upper cylinder, suction 'and delivery valves i'or said cylinder in said cover,ra straight tube extending through said water jacket connecting passage and entirely surrounded by water space, said tube serving as the air connection between the first stage delivery valve and the second stage suction valve, a

A two stage compressor comprising rst and second stage cylinders spaced apart and oppositely arranged, a piston of two diameters fitting said cylinders, a pedestal, an outer casing mounted on said pedestal, a liner having the cylinders formed in its opposits end portions and adapted to form water jacket spaces around the cylinders and between it and the casing, the said casing and liner intermediate of the cylinders being slotted and the pedestal constituting the end portion of the lower cylinder, suction and delivery valves for said lower cylinder located in said pedestal, a cover constituting the end portion of the upper cylinder, suction and delivery valves for said cylinder in said cover, a gudgeon pin fixed in the said piston and extending through the slots in the casing and liner, a transverse shaft mounted in bearings in said pedestal, eccentrics on said shaft, straps embracing said eccentrics and pivotally connected to said gudgeon pin, substantially as described.
