Description
HENRY C. WHH'E. mprovement in Piston Rod Packing. l
Patented Feb. 27, |812.
WM www f5 lllllnllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY o. WHITE, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., AssIGNOR TO THOMAS JOYOE, OE BROOKLYN, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlSTON-ROD PACKINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,182, dated February 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
f Be it known that I, HENRY G. WHITE, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Circular Metallic Wedge and Bevel Rubber-Ring Packing 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal central section view of my invention.
This invention has relation to the packing of the cylinder-heads of steam-engines; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement, within the stufling-box, of a cylindrical India-rubber wedge, compressed by means of a pair of semi-cylindrical metallic wedges, which are forced through the tightening of the cylinder gland. An internal packing of coiled hemp lines the India-rubber and metallic wedges in order to render the stuffingboX steam-tight.
teferring to the drawing, A represents the cylinder stiiting-box, B the piston-rod, and C the gland. D is a rubber collar resting against the .end of the stuffing-box. The upper exterior half or portion of said collar is beveled or made wedge-shaped. E represents a pair of semicircular metallic wedges having their interior surfaces beveled, so that they pass behind and correspond to the taper of the lower wedge or collar. Between the India-rubber and metallic Wedges and the pistonrod is arranged a packing of coiled hemp or ,other suitable material, a., which will render the stuffing-box steam-tight. The gland C is attached to the ange of the stuifing-box by means of the bolts e and nuts e', and presses against the upper ends of the wedges E. According as the packing requires tightening the gland is forced further into the stuffing-box, and through the wedges E compresses the India-rubber wedge-collar, thereby accomplishing the desired purpose.
What I claim as .my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- The com bin ation of the India-rubber wed gering D, seini-eylin drical metallic wedges E, and soft-packing a, with the gland C and stuffingbox A, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. WHITE.
