Be it known that I Vieron A. LAnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Humidifying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in humidifying devices for use more particularly in connection with steam or hot water radiators, to keep the air in the room in which the radiator is located, in moist condition.
My primary object is to provide a novel and simple construction of device for this purpose which may be economically manufactured, be readily installed for use, be highly sanitary, provide for the maximum moisture evaporation, be readily cleansed and afford adjustments whereby the iiow of air-currents from the radiator through the moisture-evaporating surfaces of the device ma be controlled and substantially arrested 1f desired. 4 Referring to the accompanying drawings- Figure 1' is a sectional view of a radiator equipped with a humidifying device constructed in accordance with my invention and also shown in section, the section being taken at the line 1 on Fig. 2 and viewed in the direction of thev arrow. Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow, showing the radiator in elevation; and Fig. 3,
a plan view of the structure shown in Fig.
2 with certain portions thereof successively broken away to illustrate details.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention I provide ,a housing 4 which is preferably of sheet metal and isy adapted to .lit telescopically over the top of a radiator 5, as shown in the drawing, this housing containing aA pan 6, forming a receptacle for water, which is secured to the housing preferably at the opposite ends of the pan, as shown, as by soldering it, or otherwise securing it thereto, the pan being spaced at opposite sides thereof represented at 7, from the adjacent sides 8 of the housing, as represented in the drawing, to provide passages 9 for the heated air rising from the radiator, the device resting at the bottom of the pan on the upper surface of the radiator. The housing 4 also contains a partition 10 arranged above the pan 6 and Specioation of Letters Patent.

or screen 12 and secured in any suitable way thereon, this opening being flanked by a continuous inwardly projecting angular flange 13 which extends within the confines of the pan 6 as shown.
The' partition 10 is supported preferably by the adjustable means hereinafter described, to extend above the pan 6 and thus permit the heated air` rising from' the radiator to follow the course to the screenopening 12, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, thispartition being provided with means for causing the air in moving to the screen, to pass in contact with water drawn up from the pan. The means provided for this purpose comprise webbing of any suitrods of each pair being closely s aced as shown and lying at their ends on t e upper faces of the opposite portions of the anges 13 asshown, where they are secured any suitable manner, the webbing between the rods 14 of -each pair being looped downwardly to providethe depending loop-sections 15, the opposing sides of which extend in closely spaced relation as shown and-depend into the water in the pan 6, and the horizontal portions represented at 16, extend in closely spaced relation with their adjacent edges relatively close together as shown. Thus the combined length of the horizontal sections 16 is substantially equal to the length of the screen-portion 12 and this feature, with the depending loop-portions 15, affords the maximum area of wa-I by water from the pan which rises through the loops by capillary attraction.
The adjustable supports for the partition 12 may be of any desirable construction, as,
for exam le, that shown, comprising screwdevices 1 which engage threaded openings 18 in the ends of the partition 10 and rest at their lower ends on flanges 19 on vthe pan 6. lBy this arrangement the amount of space between the partition 10 and pan 6 may be varied at Will and, When desired, the partition may beadjustedto rest at its marginal edges on the upper edges of the pan and thus form a cover therefor and shut gif the flow of air through the housing.
It Will be understood from the foregoing that the strip of webbing affording the secytions 15 and 16 may be readily assembled With the partition 10 to the position shown and removed therefrom for cleansing, or replacement, if desired.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction in which my invention is embodied, I do not Wish to be understood as intending to limit it thereto, as the same may be variously modified and altered Without departing from the spirit of my invention, it being my intention toclaim my invention as fully and completely as the prior state of the art will permit.
What I claim as newY and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A device of the character set forth comprising a housing adapted to be positioned on the top of a radiator, a an for Water in said housing and spaced om the latter to provide passage for air, a substantially horizontal partition in said housing above said pan and open at its central portion and arranged to prevent the air from passing from said housing exceptingV through the open portion of said partition, and means in said housing extending across and substantially covering said opening and extend-v lngv into said pan for presenting a waterf soaked surface to the currents of air rising through said housing and the open portion of said partition.
2. A device of the character set forth comprising a housing adapted to be positioned on the top of a radiator, a lan for Water in vsaid housing and spaced rom the latter to provide passage for air, a substantially horizontal partition above said pan and open at its central portion and arranged to f prevent the air.from passing from said housing excepting through the open portion of said partition, and means carried by said partition extending across and substantially covering said opening and extending into said pan for presenting a Water-soaked surface to the currents of air rising through said housingv and the open portion of said partition.

A device of the character set forth comprising a housing adapted to be positioned on the top of a radiator, a pan for water in said housing and spaced from the latter to rovide passage forair, a substantially horizontal partition in Said housing above said pan and adjustably supported to vary the distance at which it extends above said pan and open at its central portion and arranged to prevent the air from passing from said housing excepting through the open portion of said partition, and means in said housing and extending into said pan for 7a presenting a Water-soaked surface to the currents of air rising through said housing and the open portion of said' partition.
4. A device of the character set forth eomprising a housingjadapted to be positioned 7 on the top of a radiator, a pan for Water in said housing and spaced from the latter to provide passage for air, a partition adjustably supported in said housing to extend above said panand adapted to be adjusted from a position in which it substantially closes the top of the pan, to a position above the pan, said partition being open at its eentral portion and arranged to prevent the air from passing from said housing excepting through the central portion of the partition when the latter is raised above the pan, and
' located in said housing above said pan, said partition containing a central openingflocated within the confines of the top edges 10o of said pan, said partition being constructed and arranged to prevent the air from passing from said housing exoeptingthrough said passage, thence over the top of the pan and beneath the partition and thence through the central portion of the partition, adjustable means for holdingsaid artition in differentpositions of vertlcal adjustment relative to the top of the pan, and absorbent material carried by said partition and lo# cated adjacent the 'central opening therein and extending into said pan for presenting a Water-'soaked surface to the currents of airrising to and through the'open portion of said partition.

In a device of the eharacterset forth, the combination of a housing adapted to be positioned on the top of a radiator, a pan or Water in said housing and spaced from the latter to provide passage for air, a' sub- 120 stantially-horizontal partition in said housing above said pan and .open at its central portion and arranged to prevent the air from passing from said housing excepting through the central portion .of said partition, and means for presenting water-soaked surfaces to the air currents passing through said housing, comprising a web of absorbent material arranged to afford substantially horizontally disposedsections the adjacent ends of which extend relatively closel together and across said opening for su stantially closing the latter, and dependin loop-sections which extend into the pan, te sides of said loop-sections being substantially vertical and spaced relatively closely together.
7 In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pan, and means for presenting water-soaked surfaces to air-currents comprising a frame-member having a central opening and arranged above said pan, a series of sets of rods extending across said opening and arranged in substantially parallel relation, the rods of each set being relatively closely spaced, and a strip of ab-l sorbent material extending over said rods and looped downwardly between the members of each pair thereof to afford substantially horizontally disposed sections of absorbent material the adjacent ends of which extend relatively close to each other, and depending sections which extend into said pan2 the opposite sides of said last-named sectlo'ns extending relatively close toy each other, and substantially vertical, and means for directing heated air against the surfaces of said absorbent material extending above the water in said pan.
8. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a housing, a pan in said housing and spaced therefrom to provide passage for air, said device being provided with an opening directly above said pan for the outlet of the heated air passing through 'said passage, absorbent material extending across said opening and substantially parallel therewith to substantially cover said opening and arranged directly above said pan for subjection to the air currents, and a series of depending members of absorbent material in contact with the absorbent material extending across said opening, and extending into said pan.
