CARL M. MUELLER, OF ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM MUELLER, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
Application filed November 9, 1916.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL M. MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Automobile-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks for automobiles and the like, one of the objects being to provide a simple, durable and eflicient device whereby the spark lever and the throttle lever can be securely locked to the steering wheel, thus to render it impossible to operate the automobile.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character which can be quickly applied, which can be cheaply manufactured, and which, aside from the padlock used, is formed in but a single piece.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lock in position upon the steering wheel, spark lever and throttle lever of an automobile.
Fig. 2 is a view looking at one end of the locking plate.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the device.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a tongue having a notch or recess 2 in one end of a size sulficient to enable it to receive one of the spokes of the steering wheel W. Located at the other end of the tongue is a head 3 arranged at an obtuse angle to the tongue 1 and projecting laterally beyond the tongue, said laterally projecting portions constituting arms 4: and 5. The arm 4 has its terminal Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 25, 191?.
Serial No. 130,402.
3 and projects beyond the head to provide a bracing finger 11.
In using the device herein described the tongue 1 is placed in position under the steering wheel so that one of the spokes of said wheel will rest within the notch 2. In placing this tongue in position the spark lever S is first inserted through the enlarged portion of the slot 6 after which the slotted arcuate portion 8 of arm 5 is placed astride the throttle lever T. When the parts are thus located the finger 11 will bear against the hub portion of the wheel W. A padlock of any suitable form and which has been indicated at P is placed in engagement with that portion of the lever T exposed within the arcuate portion of the arm 5. With this lock in engagement with the throttle lever T, the entire structure is held assembled with the wheel W and the two levers and it obviously becomes impossible to change the relation of these parts as long as the locking plate is thus located. In order to operate the parts it is necessary first to remove the padlock whereupon the entire plate can be lifted out of engagement with the parts on which it is mounted.
A structure such as herein described can be slightly modified to adapt it for use in connection with different types of automobiles. The structure is advantageous because it can be readily formed in a single piece of metal, can be cheaply manufactured, and occupies but little space.
What is claimed is An automobile lock including a tongue having a notch for the reception of a spoke of a steering wheel, a head at one end of and disposed at an angle to the tongue, said head having arms extending laterally beyond the tongue, one of said arms having an aperture for the reception of a spark lever, the other arm having a longitudinally slotted spark lever.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
