Beit known that wc. .loser liu'ioiixiin, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and resi-- dent `of' Brooklyn. in the county ot' Kings and State of New York, and FRANZ HA Multizona, a subject. of the Emperor of Austria, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and Statey of New York, have invented certaniiew and useful Improvements in \uto niatic Controls for Valves, of which the .Eollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in thermostatic controlling devices, and particularly to devices used in connection with internal combustion motors, such as are commonly venxiployed in connection with selfpropelled vehicles.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide means which automatically drain the cooling'tank should the teinperature approach nearly to the freezing point.
Another object iS to provide means which can be reset by a single operation, the device beingisimple in construction, effective inoperation, and occupying a minimum space These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawings, forming a material part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view ot" the Fig. G is another side elevation taken in a plane transverse to Fig. 5.

In either case, the lower element of the coil is directly connected with a vessel 11, of considerable area, which, together with the coils, is filled with a substance, as mercury, alcohol, or ether, which will expand or contract under changes in temperature of the surrounding atmosphere.

The control device is secured to the tank drain pipo 4U by moans of a clip-band 41, and consists oi? the valve 42, to the stem 43 `ot' which is connected a lever 45 normally actuated in one direction by the coil sprin 44, surrounding the valve stem 43, and adapted to he held so that the valve is in an open position by the catch 46, alxed to the armature 47, the armature being guided by rodsl 48, and nheld normally downwardv under ressure of the coil springs 49.
Tie upper end of these rods is rigidly engaged with the plate 50, the springs 49 also abutting against it, so as to press the that the electric armature downward; the plate 50 is secured directl by the clip 41 to the pipe and has depen ing centrally between the rods 48, a magnet 52 which when energized, serves to retract the armature, and re ease the lever :from engagement with the catch 46.
Thus when the material in the coils 10, contracts to such an extent as to permit the contact head 24 to make contact with the cover 28, the electric circuitis closed, the cover 28 being directly connected by the wire with one terminal wire V37, while the sleeve 15, through which the rod 23 operates, is in electric circuit with the other wire 36, through the cover 35, casing 18 and screws 16. 4 The circuit can be traced from the battery 75 to the thermostatic control at the binding screw 31. From this control switch the circuit is traced through wire 36, through the elements 53 andv 54,0f the release switch, kept normally closed by the head 60 of the resetting rod 57.
From the element 54 the current passes through the electromagnet 52, thence through the wire 62, terminal 63 to terminal 64, wire 65 and back to the battery 75,
The valve is operated automatically through lowering of the temperature of the atmosphere to such. a degree as to close the thermostatic control switch, thus energizing the magnet, causing the armature to rise and release the valve lever this lever when freed from the catch 46 is moved downward by action of the spring 44 and caused to enge with the toe 56 formed on the rod 57 getild vertically in supports and maintained in a normally raised position by the spring 58; when the nod is lowered the head 60 is withdrawn from the elements 53 and 54 so rsircuit is broken, and so remains'. xtil the lever 45 be raised and reset inl agement with the catch 46.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, isz* 1. In a valve control system, the combination with a normally open gate valve, an operating lever engaged therewith, a magnet, an armature operated by said magnet having a catch engageable with said lever, a source Vof electric energy connected with said inagthe upper convolution of said coil, means for holding said sleeve rigidly, a piston operative in Said sleeve, an insulated cap carried by said sleeve, a source of electric energy, one wire from which is connected with said cap, and the other wire with said sleeve, a contacting element carried by said piston, whereby as it descends, the electric circuit is closed, a gate valve, and means for opening said valve, said means being operated through said electric current.
