HARRY E, CAMPBELL,
- oration.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
METAL wmnow FRAME 'AND SASH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metal Win-- dow Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specification.
Theinvention is a metal window-frame and sash, and consists in improvements upon the frame disclosedin U S. Letters Patent No. 1,222,358, granted tome April 10, 1917, wherein I have set forth a metal window-- frame comprising a lintel, a sill and two tubular side members formingjanibs-the said side members each having vertical opening extending through its inner walla isash slidable in said" frame, and plates laterally projecting from said sash and en-,
tainin r all the advanta es of m aforesaid device in preventing entrance of drafts, 'i'noisture or flame to the'room'or building. In the accompanying drawings' Figure 1 is a vertical section on the line 0:, m of Fig. 2, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section Similar letters an ,numbers of reference indicate like parts. i
The wind0w-frame, which is of metal, comprises two similar jambs, one of which 7 is shown at A, asill B and a lintel (1,1
The jamb A is constructed of plate. metal and, as here shown, substantially quadrangular in cross section, there being a front wall 1, a rear wall 2, an outer side wall 3,
and an inner side wall formed in three sections 7, 9, 6*. The walls 2, 3 and a portion of wall 1 are preferably in a single piece, the edges of wall 1 and wall 2 being flanged at 4 and 5. Within the jamb and extending partly across the same is a plate or partition (5 which is bolted to flange 4, and then bent at right angles to form part ct wall 1., and again at right angles at (3* to form one section of the inner side wall.
Specification of Letters Patent. latented Sept, 25, 1917, Application filed JiIarcli a, 1917. Serial is; 153,256.
The remaining sections of said inner-side wall arethe' plate 7 and the cross portion 9 of T-sha ed'plate 8, said cross portion being secure by screws to lugs 10, 11 respectively on the. sill Band lintel C.. There 18 a slotor opening 12 between theveEticaI I edges of plate 7 and cross portion 9,,and
a similar-slotor opening 13 between the vertical edges of plate 6* and cross portion 9. The inner edge of T-shaped plate 18 is,
in contact with plate 6, so that said plate forms a partition located between the openings 12,13; I) is avertically slidable lower sash, and
E a similar upper sash. On said sashes are\ laterally extending sideplates F and-Gr, The plate F on sash E extends through I slot l-t and is in slidingvcontact with plate 6. Theplate G on sash I) extends through slot 12 and is also in sliding contact with the plateG. Y
Within the lintel C-lare suspension lcyslil, I' journaled in suitable"brackets-J. The suspension cord or flexible strip K of saslrl) passes over pulley H and carries the counter-weight L. flexible strip M of sash E passes over pulley 3 I and carries the counter-weight N. The
cross sectional shape of the counter-weights is elongated, and isliere showna parallelogram, and saidweights are placed so that said parall'elogranis stand with their major axes relatively at right angles. Therefore the counter-weight L, of which the said major axis is parallel to jamb wall 2, is placed in the wider portion of thejamb included between the free edge of plate ti and wall 2,"and the counter-weight N, of which the said major axis is parallel to jamb wall 3, is placedin the narrower portion of the jarnb included between side wall '3 and plate 6. The suspension pulleys H, I are set at an angle to one another in order to suit this disposition of the counter-weights. By reason of this'construction I obtain the following advantages: I decrease the thickness of the jamb, (dis tance between parallel walls 1, 2), thus .causing the whole frame to be lighter and to occupy less space in the windowopening. I also reduce the amount of metal used, thus eheapening the construction.
The suspension cord or,
tor-weights L, N, and the smaller, the lateral sash plates F, G, so that there is no possibility of the weights and sash plates interfering with one another.
Instead of carrying the late 'al sash plates F, (it through openings or slots in the inner wall of the jamhs and across said jamhs to make contact with the side walls, as in the structure of my a'l'oresaid application. I make said sash plates of much less width, carry them, as hel'ore, through slots in the inner jamh walls, hut terminate them-at the plate (3. A large saving of metal is again ell'ected, while the joints between sash plates and jaml) remains quite as ell'ective in their capacity to prevent passage of drafts, 1noisture or flame.
1 claim:
1. A metal window-frame, comprising a hollow jaml) having a vertical opening in its inner side wall, a. partition in said jamh parallel to, said side wall and extending across said opening and partly across said amb, a sliding sash in said frame, and a plate laterally projecting from said sash, passing through said opening and having its edge in sliding contact with said partition.
2. A metal window-frame, comprising a hollow jaml) having a vertical opening in its inner side wall, a partition in said jaml) parallel to said side wall and extending across said opening and partly across said jamli, a sliding sash in said lramc, a plate .laterally projecting from said sash, passing through said opening and having its edge in, sliding contact with said partition, suspension means tor said sash, and a counterweight carried by said suspension means and disposed within said jaml) and between the outer side wall oi said amb and said part1- tion.
' 3. A metal wimlow-franie, comprising a inner side wall, a partition in said jaml) parallel to said side wall and extending across said opening and partly across said jamh, a sliding sash in said frame, a plate laterally projecting from said sash, passing through said opening and having its edge in.sliding contact with said partition, suspension means for said sash. and a counter-wcight carried by said suspension means and disposed within said jamh and in the space between the free edge of said partition and a jamh wall.
-l. metal window-l'rame, comprising a hollow jamh having parallel vertical openings in its inner side wall, a \crtical partition in said jamh extending across said openings and partly across said jamh, two sliding sashes in said frame, and plates laterally projecting from said sashes, passing through said openings and having their edges in sliding contact. with said partition.
A metal \vimlmv-l'rame, comprising a hollow jamh having parallel vertical openings in its inner side wall, a vertical parlition in said jamh extending across said openings and partly across said jamh, a partition disposed between said openings in said inner side wall and extending from said side. wall to said first-named partition, two sliding sashes in said l'rame, and plates laterally projecting from said sashes, passing through said openings and having their edges in sliding contact with said firstnamed partition.
(3. A metal wimlmv-l'rame, comprising a hollow jamh having parallel vertical openings in its inner side wall, a vertical partition in said'fijamli extending across said openings and partly across said jllllll). two sliding sashes in said frame, plates laterally projecting from said sashes. passing through said openings and havingtheiredgcsiiisliding contact with said partition, suspensi n means for said sashes, and countcr-weiglits carried by said sus 'iension means; one of said colinter-weights being disposed within said jamh and between the outer side wall of said janlh and said lltlllltltlll, and the other ol' said couliter-weights llcing disposed hollow jamh ha\ ing a vertical opening in its within said jamh and in the space llet'ween the l'rec edge of said partition and a janih wall.
In testimony whereol' l have allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
