To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that PER BrineeRnN, a sub ject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drafting- Iens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in drafting or ruling pens of that type shown and described in my prior Patent #1,117,475 of November 17, 191 1.

It is the purpose of the invention to provide an improved form of guide for ruling pens of this type whereby the operative end of the pen may be brought into closer relation with the edge of the blade of a T square or the edge of the drafting angle along which the pen is drawn; and especially to provide a guide of the class described which will be particularly well adapted for use in connection with a rotatable inking wheel whereby dotted and wavy lines may be produced in straight or irregular form as occasion may require. I

With these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departure from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

My prior patent above referred to shows a straight form of guide which is adjustable longitudinally of the pen but is set at a fixed distance from the inking wheel, and while suitable for some classes of work, yet

is not so convenient in practice,

Therefore I have now provided a guide, the lower end portion of which'is forked and deflected inward so that the two end portions which are arranged adjacent one face of the wheel are in the same plane as said face so that when the guide is drawn along the edge of the drafting rule the lines produced by the pen will be closer and easier to locate.

Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 5 indicates the penhandle, 6 the metal shank portion attached to the handle and 7 and 8 the oppositely arranged spring blades between which the ink is carried. These blades are tensioned so as to spring out and are regulated in their position by a thumb nut 9 that is adjustably mounted upon a screw 10 secured to the opposite blade 7. A grooved and pointed inking wheel 11 is rotatably mounted in holes 12 in the lower ends of the blades 7 and 8 so that the wheel may rotate therebetween in a manner to feed the ink from between the blades down and deposit it on the drawing paper in the form of series of dots when the pen is drawn along in an operative manner.

The guide 13 is in the form of an elongated metal strip having a slot 14 therein through which the clamping screw 15 passes, said screw being adjustably mounted in the blade 7 so as to clamp the guide thereto and permit it to be raised or lowered. A small lug 16 secured on the lower portion of the face of the blade 7 extends into the slot of. the guide so as to prevent the guide from moving sidewise upon the pen and thus better insure the proper positioning of the lower divided ends 17 and 18 which are disposed forward and aft of the inking wheel 11,: These ends are formed of the divided lower end portion of the guide and are bent inward as at 19, forward and aftof the wheel and have operative surfaces aa adjacent to one face 6 of the wheel so as to be nearly in the same plane as said face. In practice the pen is used by drawing the face of the lower end portions of the guide along a straight edge, leaving the wheel free to rotate in relatively close proximity to the straight edge along which it is drawn.

Having thus described my invention what .I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a drafting pen of the class described, the combination with a pair of blades and a screw for adjusting the position of the same with reference to each other, of a guide mounted upon the face of one of the blades and having a divided lower end portion forming two fingers which are deflected inward, forward and aftiof the wheel and adjacent to one face thereof.

2.
