WILLIAM J. WILLIAMSON APPARATUS ron GRADING sonrisa@ Application filedMarch 9, 1917.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, VILLIAM J. WIL- LIAMSON and JOHN F. SHOEMAKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Jennings, in the Parish of Jefferson Davis and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Apparatus for Grading Roads, &c.; and we do hereby de- AClare the following to be a full, clear, and
o exact description of the invention, such as ence marked thereon,
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of referwhich form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for grading roads, cleaning out ditches, etc., and consists of a simple and efficient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan View.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the conveyer.
Fig. l is a detail View of the cutting knives.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the 4scraper blades.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings, by letter, A designates the truck of the apparatus which carries the m0- tor B. A power shaft C has belted connection with the motor and forms means for driving an endless conveyer, shown clearly in the drawings, and which consists of a rectangular-outlined frame D, pivotally mounted at one end upon the shaft E which is journaled in suitable bearings in the frame of the truck and carries a beveled gear F in mesh with the beveled wheel G fixed to the shaft C. Said frame has sprocket wheels journaled in suitable bearings at the ends of the frame D and over which an endless chain conveyer H passes, made up of links with cross bars H connecting the same. Idler sprocket wheels K are mounted upon a shaft L, journaled in the bracket-shaped hanger member N which is secured to the opposite y Specification of Letters Patent.

beams ofthe frame D. rlhe sprocket chain passes over said idler sprocket wheels and which takes up the slack in the conveyer.
The means for raising and lowering the swinging frame D consists of a lever which is pivotally mounted upon a pin P carried by the post A which rises from the truck, a suitable rod J pivotally connecting the short arm of the lever with an eye bolt N which is fastened to the hanger member Y.
Fastened to the several cross bars H of the conveyer chain are the curved dirt loosening blades R, one of which has its free end curved and is adapted to cut into the soil and loosen the same. Scrapers, designated by letter M, have flanged ends which are fastened to the links of the chain upon either side and said scrapers are posi ioned between the rows of dirt loosening blades, as shown clearly in the drawings.
Fastened to the shaft S, at the free swinging end of the frame and upon which the sprocket wheels at one end of the frame are mounted, are the cutter' arms S which are adapted to cut into the bank or ground adjacent to the part which is to be traversed by the Scrapers.
In operation, when the apparatus is set in motion, it will be noted that the cutting blades R, being shaped and positioned as shown, will, when in operation, tend to loosen the soil which, through the medium of the serapers, will be smoothed and sprea over the surfaceto be graded. The distance at which it might be desired to hold the frame carrying the endless chain will be regulated by the lever-actuated mechanism, the long arm of which may be held by means of pins upon the standard. By the provision of the cutter blades at the free swinging end of the frame, the bank or soil may be cut as the knives are revolved by the endless conveyer passing about the sprocket chains.
What we claim to be new 1s An apparatus for grading, cleaning ditches, etc., comprising a truck, a motor mounted therein, a shaft journaled in said truck and having gear connection with the motor, a swinging frame pivotally mounted upon said shaft, sprocket wheels upon the latter and upon the free swinging ends of the frame, an endless chain conveyer passing about said sprocket wheels, bars connecting said endless conveyer plates, scrapers having flanged ends secured to the deo sprocket chains, curved cutter blades Secured to said bars Which connect the sprocket chains and intermediate the Scrapers, Cutter blades secured t0 and rotating with the 5 Sprocket Wheels at the free swinging end of the frame,
adapted to eut into the bank as the sprocket Wheels are rotated, andk means for raisingand lowering the frame. In testimony whereof We hereunto ax our signatllres.
VILLIAM J. WILLIAMSON.
JOHN F. SHOEMAKER.
