Be it known that we, VVILLIAM Ll BARRON States, residing, respectively, at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, and Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of'N'ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to. provide a button-holder adapted to rigidly hold a button while being secured to a garment by means of fastening stitches, but constructed to permit easy introduction and removal of the button.
As preferably constructed, the buttonholder is secured to a spring-pressed presser bar of a sewing machine and comprises two levers, provided with button-gripping jaws connected together for reciprocal movement. A button-jaw setting device is provided witha clearance aperture permitting sufficient -n1ovementofthe clamping levers for easy insertion or removal of a button, a spring tending to force the button-clamping jaws toward each other within the limits of such movement; It has been found in practice, however,that a large-size button must be rigidly held during the sewing operation, and accordingly the present clamp is provided with a locking device adapted to normally prevent the action of the spring and thereby rigidly hold the button during the sewing operation. i This locking device may be manually released in the lowered position of the button-holder and is mechanically released when the button-holder is lifted for removal "and insertion of the work. 1, V

The machine asshown is constructed with a frame comprising a hollow "standard 1 with the-lateral work-sustaining or presser-foot horn 2 and the hollow overhanging arm 3 in which latter is journaled the main-shaft and FRITZ E. OsoL, citizens of the Unlted 3 tively connected by means of a link 15 with a lateral armlG of a rock-shaft 17. The rock-shaft 17 carries another arm 18 having a roller-stud l9 entering a cam-groove 20 formed in a. canrwheel 21 shown partly in section in Fig. 2. The cam-wheel 21 is carried by a transverse shaft 22 suitably rotated from the main-shaft at by means of a wormwheel 23 and worm 24c.
The shaft 22 also carries a stop-motion controlling cam 25, shown in Fig. 1 partly in full and partly in dotted lines. The periphery of the controlling cam 25 contacts with a roller-stud 26 carried by a bellcranklever 27, fulcrumed at 28 upon the frame 1 of the machine and suitably connected with an ordinary form of stop-motion device.
Cooperating with the needle 12 is the oscillating shuttle 29 journaled in the race 30 and provided with the thread-case 31. The shuttle is actuated bymeans of the driver 82 at the forward end of the rock-shaft 33 mounted within the horn 2 and having at its rearward end the crank 34: actuated in a well-known manner by means of the pitman 35 connected with the crank 36 of the mam-shaft 4;.
The lateral arm or horn2 is provided with a raised work-supporting portion 37 and opposed thereto is the presser-fOot 38 adapted to rest upon the fabric m and se cured by means of screws 39 to the vertical carrying bar 4K0 slidingly mounted in a guideway ll of a bracketel2 secured to the frame of the machine.
The presser-bar 43 is journaled in the head of the bracket-arm and has adjustably secured theretoby means of the set-screw H the collar 45, having a forked arm 46e1nbracing the guide-rod 4 7 and the upwardly projecting arm 48 having a lateral lug 49 adapted for engagement by the forward arm 50 of a lifting lever mounted uponthe fulcrum screw-stud 51 sustained by the frame. The lifting lever has a rearwardly extending arm 52 and pivoted thereto by means of a screw 53 is a link 54 to which is attached a rod 55 having suitable connection with a treadle. Surrounding the presser-bar 4:3 is a spring 56 interposed between the collar 45 and the upper bearing of the bar.
Secured to the lower end of the pressurebar 43 by means of the screw 57 is the shank 58 of the laterally extending frame-plate 59 formed with a slot 60 through which passes the shank of the thumb-screw 61 by means of which is adjustably secured in place the plate 62 sustaining the operative parts of the button-holder. The plate 62 carries a guidfork 72 of the lever 67. A spring 73 has its opposite ends connected with the clamping levers by means of screws 74 and tends to draw the jaws 69 and toward each other.
Fulcrumed upon a-screw-stud 75 depending from the holder-plate 62 is an anglelever formed with ,arms 76 and 77, the latter of which is formed at one end with a boss 78 provided with a threaded aperture to receive the shank 79 of an adjusting clamp-screw 80 passing through a slot 81 in the holder-plate62. The end of the other arm 76 carries a'screw-pin 82 embraced by one apertured end of a link 83 formed with an elongated aperture 8% and with depending lugs 85 and 86. One side of the lug 86 is inclined to provide a trapezoidal opening entered by the wedge-block 87 constituting a detachable section of the link 83 and carried by one end of a rod 88 which passes through the elongated aperture 84 in the link and through the hollow post 89 carried by the clamping lever 68. The post 89 extends upwardly through a slot 90 in the holder-plate 62. A button-holder for sewing machines comprising opposed grippings jaws, means for setting said jaws in spaced relations for different sizes of buttons, a spring adapted to force said gripping-jaws to yieldingly hold a button, button-holder lifting means, and means independent of said lifting means and of said setting means for normally rendering the action of said spring ineffective.
7. A button-holder for sewing machines comprising opposed gripping jaws, a spring adapted to force said gripping jaws to yieldingly hold a button, a locking device for normally rendering the action of said spring ineffective, button-holder lifting means, and means separate from said lifting means for rendering said locking device ineffective when the button-holder is lifted.
8. A button-holder for sewing machines comprising opposed gripping-jaws connected for reciprocal movement, a spring adapted to force said gripping-jaws into holding relation with a button, means for locking said jaws against reciprocal movement, button-holder lifting means and means independent of said lifting means for releasing said locking means.
9. A button-holder comprising a support, clamping members sustained by said support and having opposed gripping-jaws movable toward and from each other, means for setting said jaws in spaced relations for difierent sizes of buttons, and a locking connection between said setting means and the jaws to prevent relative movement of the jaws during the sewing operation.
10. A button-holder comprising a support, clamping members sustained by said support and having opposed gripping-jaws movable toward and from each other, means for setting said jaws in spaced relations for diiferent sizes of buttons, a locking connection between said setting means and the jaws to prevent movement of the jaws during the sewing operation, and means for releasing said locking connection to permit limited movement of the jaws for insertion and removal of buttons.
11. A button-holder comprising a support, clamping members sustained by said support and having opposed gripping-jaws movable toward and from each other, means for setting said jaws including a lever fulcrumed on said support, and a locking connection between said lever and one of said clamping members.
12. A button-holder comprising a support, clamping members sustained by said support and having opposed jaws movable toward and from each other, means for setting said jaws including a lever fulcrumed on said support, a locking connection between said lever and one of said aws, and means for releasing said locking connection to permit limited movement of said jaws.
13. A button-holder comprising opposed gripping-jaws, a gripping-jaw setting device including a link formed in relatively movable sections, and means normally acting to unite said sections to rigidly hold the jaws in their set positions.
14. A button-holder comprising opposed gripping-jaws, a gripping-jaw setting device including a link formed in relatively movable sections, means normally acting to unite said sections to rigidly hold the jaws in their set positions, and means for rela tively shifting said sections.
