Description

WILLlAM ROGERS.
lmprovement in Wndlasses.
No. 124,087. Patemd Feb.27,1s7 2.
glnlllunl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WHILIAM ROGERS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ALEXANDER CHARTERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,087, dated February 27, 1872; antedated February 17, 1872.
I, WILLIAM ROGERS, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, in the Stat-e of Ohio, have invented a certain Windlass, of Which the following is a specication:
The first part of my invention relates to the combination of the drums and heads of a windlass in such a manner that either of them can be used independent and also together, as the case may require it, in setting or in reeling sail aboard of a vessel. The second part of my invention relates to the application of certain gearing to the main shaft in such a manner that one mans strength would produce the same e'ect as four or siX men with the old apparatus now in use.
Figure 1 is a plan embodying my invention; Fig. 2, side elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
A A A A is the frame of themachine, which supports shaft B. C C are heads fastened on the end of shaft B. D D are drums loose on shaft B. Drums D D will revolve with shaft B, as the case may require it, when clutches E E are thrown in by means of forked levers F F. A spiral gear, G, fast upon the shaft B, gears into a Worm-Wheel, H, which is supported by a spindle running in boxes of frame A A A A. Acrank applied to spindle of Worm- Wheels A will turn the Whole machine. The worm-Wheel H is made one-half ofthe diameter of the drumsD D', so that two revolutions of the crank I will turn the drums D D once around. A gear, K, is attached, gearing into small gear on spindle of Wormgear H, by means of which the speed of the drums or heads can be increased to any desired amount by making the gear K larger or smaller. The band-brakes L L upon the flanges of drums D D are used in lowering sails. The sail can be brought down at once by raising the foot from levers M M, and throwing out clutches E E 3 or, by retaining some pressure on the brake, sails can be made to lower slowly or stopped at any point.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the Worm H and worm- Wheel G with shaft B, clutches E E, drums D D', and heads C C, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
WM. ROGERS.
