The inventionis particularly adapted for usein connection with passenger cars, but it'lwill be understood thatit can be used in other window' frames.
The object ofmy invention is to provide means for closing the opening when the sash is in the raised position and also, in
some instances, to close the opening when' the sash has been lowered in the space below the sill.
This obj ect I attain in the following Inanner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a sectional perspective view illustrating my invention;
Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation, showing the sash raised and the opening closed;
Fig. 3, is a view of the sash partly lowered into the opening and the closing device pushed back clear of the sash;
Fig. 4, is a sectional view, showing the sash lowered to the open position, but not fully into the opening, the sash projecting sufficiently above the sill to allow it to be.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the outside panel of the car, made in any suitable Inanner, and 2 is the inside panel. These panels are preferably ina-de of sheet metal pressed into shape and reinforced in any manner desired. 3, 3 are the metallic posts which separate the car window openings, and grooves 4 are formed in these posts and act as guides for the sash 5, which may be of any ordinary construction and may be either of wood or metal.. 6 is the inner sill which,

flange 7. 8 is the outer sill forming a con- K tinuation `of the outer panel 1 of the car body in the present instance, and this sill has a vertical flange 9. The two flanges 7 and 9 are spaced a sufficient distance apart to allow forthe passage of the sash 5.
It has been the practice in making a window frame, in which the sash is lowered into a space below the sill, to leave the entrance to this space entirely open. This not only allows the rain to beat in through this opening, but also allows a draft, which is objectionable in this type of car, and the main feature of applicants invention is to provide a. device for closing this opening when the window is in the raised position andalso to provide means for closing the opening when the window is entirely within the space below the sill.
10 is the closing device consisting of a plate pivoted to the frame of the car at 11. In the present instance, this plate 10 has a vertical portion 12 and a shaped flange 13; the portion 14 of the fiange being located under the inner s-ill, the portion 15 bearing against the flange 7 when the device is in the closed position, and the portion 16 forming a continuation of the two sills and also forming a cover for the Opening through which the sash extends.
17, 17 are blocks, in the present instance secured to each end of the closing device 10 and having pins which form the pivots 11. At the center of the flange 13 is a stop 18, which is shaped to engage the ianged end of the inner sill 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, when the closing device is moved to its extreme ,open position, but the forni of this stop may be modified without departing from the essential features of the invention and it may be located at each end of the closing device instead of at the center, if found desirable. I preferably notch the posts at 19, Fig. 3, so as to allow the ends of the portions 16 of the closing device to extend into the posts, and this forms a stop for the closing device when in the closed position, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5.
rIhe sash may be raised and lowered by hand, or may be manipulated by mechanical means without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the present instance,
while the closing device is movedy to the closed position by gravity, a spring may be used, if found desirable.
- When the sash is raised it is lifted above the outer sill suhiciently' to allow thev closing device to move forward, so as to close the opening in the sill, then it is allowed to drop onto the closing device. When in this position, the construction is such that it will turn water and will form a comparatively tight joint.
When it is desired to open the window the sash is raised and the closing device is drawn back so as to expose the opening, after which the sash is lowered into the opening, either into the position illustrated in Fig. el, with the portion of the Sash eX- tending above the sill, or entirely below the sill, as in Fig. 5, in which position the device moves over the sash and closes the opening.

1.- The combination of a window frame having guides and havingan inner and an outer sill spaced apart to form a passage, the inner sill having a depending flange forming a stop, the outer sill having a vertical flange at the passage;v apivoted closing device pivoted to the frame and having a portion bent and extending through `the passage and arranged to bear against the,
