Be it known that I," James Pownns, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New Yorlg and State of New York, have invcnbed'certein' new and useful Improvements in Selective and Totalizing Count-Actions for Card- Sortin .Machines, ot' which the following is a spec fication. My present invention is intended to supply a simple and reliable action for use in connection with sorting card-accounting niachines, and adapted to automatically co-act with such machines andwith'power-control apparatus applied thereto, to select and securately count, separately b classes and the total number of, perforate recor cards of card-series sorted in such machines and to cause the operation of a series of mechanical counters or count-recording machines, of usual type, to record said count, by classes and in total.
While my apparatus is readily adaptable to genoral'use, as illustrated it is especially designed for use in connection with car sorting: machines such as describcd'in my pending application, Serial No. 667,771, filed Feb; 15, 1912, and to such machines equipped with stop or power-control ineehanisrn such as described in my pendingapplication, Serial No. 758,774 of Apr. 4, 1 915.:

The roller-feed by which cards are advanced from the pin-plates to the deflectors is generally indicated by 80. In the practice of my present invention I provide a series of counters, C C C C, and Ct, the former to record the number of cards of each class and the last to record the total number of cards, in"the series sorted. These are common decimal count recording devices.

pivoted on the counters arm (1 and provided with a transversely extending head C, which normally lies above and out of the tappets path, but is depressed thereinto by the above-described connection (1 whenever the corresponding deflectors e or 1', etc. is set, as above described; the rocking of the shaft 73, pulling down the pawl C so that its head C is located in the tappets path, which at the proper time in the motionscycle, is advanced by the cam 104, articulated-crank (1 and rod C strikes the head (1 of the pawl C rocks the arm (3 of the counter O or (3 etc, and causes it to count and record one and the as sage of a card of its particular class; 'le at thee-same time the upper rod C rocks the arm of the total counter and causes it to count one and totalize the cards, (regardless of class) of the series.
In order to prevent the counters C, etc, from operating and recording when the mam shaft 10 and cam 104 revolve idly I provide the connection breaker generally indicated by S. The horizontal arm 0 of the articulated-lever C is itself a supplemental bell-crank pivoted in common with the articulated lever C", carries mounted on its lower arm the cam-roller (1 and on its upper arm an abutment pin, C", normally held distant'from and operatively connected with -a corresponding abutment C by a slip-abutment S, operatively connected with the stop mechanism S and adapted to be thereby inserted and held between and to operatively connect the abutment pins U and C. and the levers 0 and 0"", so that they act as one, when the cam 104 o )erates or the spring 0"" retracts them; an to be withdrawn and break the connection between them. so that said cam can revolve idly and idly swing the supplemental bell crank without causing the articulated lever, (I to move and operate the counters C, etc.

In 'my present invention I utilize members of the above described. apparatus to operate the stop-abnt1ne'ntS by providing a suitable auxiliary frame 2* mounted on the. main frame 2, a secondary bell crank S mounted thereon. a primary bell crank S pirotell on the same fulcrnni' with the switch S and having one rm loosely connected with the pin S which connects the. switch and switching rod and the other linked, by a link i with the Vertical arm of the seca handle for manual operation rimary ondary bell-crank S, to whose other arm I pivot the slip-abutment S, which is also a bell-crank, with a rounded engaging end and a slotted ositioning end and properly positioned, w en disengaged, by a plate spring S which plays in its slot S and, at such times, positions the rounded, free end of said slip abutment so that when it approaches the abutment pins 0 and C it will point fairly between them.
During normal operation the card-sorting machine'picks cards, one at a time, from the bottom of the stack in the magazine 1, advances them into and operatively positions them in the'carddvay 164 betwee'n'the card plates 25 and 26, with their record-perforations in register with pin holes in said plates and sorting pins 39; and the pin box 24-, pins 39 and detector S are vertically re ciprocated. It is observed that. under such circumstances, the total :counter Ct is operated every time the cam 10% revolves; but class counters, G etc., are not operated unless their corresponding pins 39 have found perforations in the card corresponding with facts of the class they record, passed through said perforations and set their corresponding pawls G; for otherwise their pins would be upheld by the unperforated card and the intermediate apparatus would rest. After counting, as aforesaid, the deflectors e, f, etc., and their belongings are power-retracted by the retractor 70 and through the connections C retract the arms of such class counters as have been operated the connection 0 and tappet rods C" an O" are retracted by the spring C; and the arm of the total counter is retracted by a spring (not illustrated).

A mechanical action adapted to operably connect a class-series of mechanical counters. and a like totalizing counter with operating members of perforated-record'- card sorting machines of the type in which series of movable pins coact with fact-recording card-perforations and thereby cause the operation of card-classifying members and comprising a settable member operably connected with each such class counter and with a card-classifying sorting-machine member and normally inactive but adapted to be set by such classifying member and when set operable to cause registration of such counter, and operating means adapted to operably connect and transmit motion from a movable sorting-machine member to said settable members when set and to such totaling counter and move said settable members and operate such class and totahzing counters.

An action adapted to operably connect a class-series of mechanical counters and a like totalizing counter with operating members of perforated-record-card sorting machines of the type in which series of movable pins coact with fact-recording card perforations and thereby cause the operation of vcard-classifyin members and comprising a pawl opera 1y connected with each such class-counter and with a card-classify ing counter and comprising a spring retracted tappet rod, a series of taplpets con nected with said rod severally a a} ted to operate said pawls when set and so totalizing counter and a cam-operated member operably connected with said tappet rod and adapted to be operated by a' sorting-machine cam.
10. In perforated-record-card sorting machines of the type in which a series of movable pins co-act with fact-recording cardperforations and thereby cause the operation of card-classifying members and with a card-controlled powerstop apparatus comprising a settable member operably connected with such counter and with a cardclassif ing sorting-machine member and normally inactive but adapted to be set by such classifying member and when set operable to cause registration of such counter, and cam-operated operating means adapted to transmit motion from a sortingqnachine cam to said settable member and comprising a tappet and a cam-operated lever, ointed arms thereof, abutments on said arms, a slip-abutment member adapted to be entered between said lever arm abutments and coordinate said lever and to be withdrawn therefrom and dissociate said lever arms and an operable connection operably connectin said slip-abutment with'such cardcontro led power stop apparatus and ada ted to be thereby operated to enter said slip abutment between and withdraw it from said lever-arm abutments.
11. In a device of the class described, actions for operating mechanical counters in connection with perforated record card sorting machines, comprising movable so'rt ing-pins, arranged in series, adapted to coact with and be positioned by recordcards, and perforations thereof, and severally to position card-classifying members in consonance with perforations of such cards; a cardclassifying-member normally inoperatively located, but operably connected with and settable by said ins as aforesaid; a counter; a normally lnoperatively located settable member operably connecting the counter with the card-classifying member, and thereby operably set to cause registration of such counter; and operating means adapted to transmit motion from the movable sorting-machine member to said settable member, when operably set, and at such times caused to operate such counter.

In a device of the class described, actions for operating mechanical-counters in connection with perforated record card sorting machines, comprising 1novable-sorting-pins, arranged in series, adapted to coact with and be positioned by record-cards, and perforations thereof, and severally to position card-classifying members in consonance with perforations of such cards; a

In a device of the class described, actions for operating a class-series of mechanical-counters, and a like totalizing counter in connection with perforatedrecord card sorting-machines, comprising movahle-sorting-pins arranged in series, adapted to coact with and be positioned by record-cards and perforations thereof, and severally to position card-classifying members corresponding with the perforations of such cards; normally inoperatively located settablemembers, each operably connecting a class-counter with a card classifying-memher, and thereby operably set to cause registration of such counter; and operating means adapted to transmit motion from a movable sortingmachine-member to said settable members, when oprably set, and to such totalizing counter," and at such times operate such totalizing-counter, and said seti'able membersyand to also operate such class-counters.

In a device of the class described, actions for operating mechanical-counters in connection with perforated record-card sorting-machines comprising movable sortingpins, arranged in series, adapted to coact with and be positioned by record-cards and perforations thereof, and severally to posi tion card-classifyingmembers in consonance with fperforations of such cards; a card classi ying-member normally inoperatively located, settable by said pins as aforesaid; a normally inoperative pawl, operably connecting the counter with the said card-classifyingmember and thereby operably set to cause registration of such counter; a tappet; a cam operated member adapted to actuate said pawl; a sorting-machine-cam; and a member adapted to actuate said .tappet through said sorting-machine-cam.

In a device of the class described, actions for operating a series of mechanical counters in connection with perforated record-card-sorting machines, comprising movablesorting-pins, arranged in series, adapted to coact with and be positioned by record-cards, and perforations thereof, and severally to position card-classifying-members, 1n consonanee with perforations of such cards; card--classifvimr-memhers arran ed inseries normally inoperatively located but severally operatively connected with and settable by pins as aforesaid, actuated by normally inoperative pawls, each operably connecting the counter with the cardclassii'ying-member and thereby operahly set to cause registration of such counter; a tappetrod; 1 series of tappets on said rod, each adapted to operate one of said pawls; a sorting machine cam. and a cam operated member adapted to operably connect said tappetrod with said sorting-machine-cam.

In a device of the class described, actions for operating a series of mechanical class-counters, and a like totalizing counter in. connection with perforated record-card sortinganachines. comprising movable-sorting-pins, arranged in series. adapted totcoact with and be positioned by record cards and perforations thereof, and severally to position card-classifying sorting-machinemembers, in consonance with perforations of such cards; card classifying-members actuated by normally ll'lOpPlfltlYG-PflWlS each operahly connecting a counter with a. cardelassifying-member, and thereby operably set to cause registration of such counter; a sorting-machine-cam; a tappet-rod; a series of tappets, connected with said rod, severally adapted to operate one of said pawls; a totalizing-counter; and a cam-o eratedmember adapted to operably connect said tapoet-rml with the sorting-machine-cam.
17. In a device of the class described, ac tions for operating mechanical counters in connection with perforated re'cord card-sorting-machines, comorising movable sortingpins arranged in series. adapted to coact with and be positioned by record-cards and perforations thereof. and severally to position card-olassifving members in eonsonance with erforations of such cards; a card classifying member normally inoperatively located but operably connected with and settable by said pins as aforesaid, thereby operablv set to cause registration of such connter: operating means adapted to transmit motion from the movable sortingmachinemember to such counter: and a mechanism comprising a conneetirn-breaker operably connected with said operating means: a detector adapted to be inoperatively positioned by a correctly-located record-card in such sorting-machine. and when not so positioned to be operatively moved; and an operable connection between said connection-breaker and detector. said mechanism adapted when said detector is not card positioned and is operatively moved, to operate said connection-breaker, and neutralize said operating means. ant at other times to be inoperative relatively thereto.
19. In an action of the, class described. a jointed cam-operated lever adapted to operably connect a sorting machine cam and settable members operably connected with mechanical counters, abutments formed on the arms of said lever, a slip abutment adapted to be located between said abutments to operably associate and to be withdrawn therefrom to dissociate the arms of said lever, a detector adapted to be inoperably positioned by a correctly located record card in such sorting machine and when not so positioned to be operatively moved, and an operable connection between said detector and slip-abutment.
19. Mechanism to count and record, by classes, cards sorted by card sortingmachines of the type characterized by mechanical sorting actions comprising normally-inoperatively-located but classifyingly settahle card-classifying members and, operably connected therewith, pins arranged in series to coact and be positioned in consonance with characteristic perforations of record cards, to elassifyin gly set such members, and comprising a mechanical counter; a normally inoperable but operably-settable mechanical action connecting said counter with, and itself settablo by, the setting of a classifying member aforesaid, to operate said counter; and operating means adapted to. transmit motion from a movable sorting machine member to said settable action when set, and at such times to move said action and operate said counter.
20. Mechanism to count and record, by classes. cards sorted by card-sorting machines of the type characterized by mechanical sorting actions comprising normally-inoperatively located but classifyingly settable card classifying members and, operably connected therewith, pins arranged in series to coact and be positioned in consonance with characteristic perforations of record cards. to classifyingly set such members, and com-- prising a series of mechanical counters; a normally-inoperable but operably-settable mechanical action connecting each of said counters with, and itself settable by, the setting of a classifying member aforesaid, to operate the eonnecte counter; and operating means adapted to transmit motion from a movable sorting machine member to such of said sottnble actions as may be set.
