To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FABIAN ZnMoJ'rnL, a citizen of Russia, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State oflennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Launching Devices for Aeroplanes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in launching device for aeroplanes.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a ready means for launching aeroplanes in a safe manner either from hangars or from shipboard, the final supporting portion of the launching means being arranged to permit of an even travel of the craft thereover.
A further object of the device is to pro vide a launching platform for aeroplanes whereby the latter may be expeditiously and safely started in its flight, adjustable resilient supporting means being arranged for the aeroplane during the latter portion of its travel over the device.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this application like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device, illustrating its use in connection with an aeroplane,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view through a forward portion thereof.
It will be understood that the present device being designed for launching aeroplanes may be employed upon shipboard or any other place desired such for instance as in connection with the hangar 10. A platform 11 extends forwardly of the hangar from a point on a level with the floor thereof as at 12 and gradually slopes upwardly in the general form of a parabolic curve. Suitable supporting means 13 are provided for the platform while a frame 14 extends forwardly therefrom having a forward freeend section 15 of the platform resiliently mounted thereon.
The platform section 15 is hinged as at 16to the main portion of the platform having a terminal rear-edge '17 preventing the section 15 from moving upwardly out of the general curvature of the complete platform. Adjusting. screws 18 are threaded through bushings 19 in the top 20 of the frame 14 while the springs 21 are tensioned between the heads 22 of the screws 18 and blocks 23 upon the bottom of the section 15. rlandles 24: are arranged on the bottoms of the screws 18 whereby the latter may be readily adjusted from points beneath the frame top 20.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that the aeroplane such as 25 being adapted for storing in the hangar 10, may move outwardly thereof upon the platform 11 passing upwardly thereover at an increasing rate of speed which still increases when passing over the section 15, the resistance to the movement of the aeroplane being lessened by the depressing of the section 15 which permits the'speed of the craft to further increase although aflording sufficient support therefor during the latter portion of its travel over the device. The tension of the spring 21 is regulated by turning the handle at for accommodating aeroplanes of different weights. An advantageous manner of launching aircraft is arranged tending toward assisting the speed as well as the safety of the initial portion of the flight.
The form of the invention herein illustrated is believed to be preferable although minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
