Be it known that I, CHARLES A.` WEISS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New Yorlnborough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cloth-Steam-Sponging `Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. .A
This invention relates to apparatus for treating cloth inclothing factories or tailor'- ing establishments, and has particular reference to means for steaming various widths of cloth in a safe and reliable manner, the operation being performed lmost expeditiously and with a minimum expenditure of time and fuel. v p f Among the objects of the invention, therefore, is to provide `a steam generator of a construction adapted lespecially for most effective and convenient use.`
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specificaton, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view ofthe complete invention; and
Il`ig.Y 2 is a vertical sectional detail of the gas valve indicating a conventional pilot feature. y f The several `parts of the device may be made of any suitable materials, and the relative sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.
Referring more particularly to the draw- `ing I show an apparatus including a steam generator A and a cloth treating table B intimately associated with each other and having a steam conveying pipe C leading from one to the other.

as shown at 16.- Theinterior of the casing may be lined with asbestos 17 to protect the same from the'intense heat and to confine Vthe heat therein as much as possible, provision being made, however, for the heat to pass upwardly through the perforated top 1S of the casing so that a certain portion of the heat will be directed against the false bottom of a preheater or tank 19 supported above the boiler 10. A pipe 20 serves to provide communication between the preheater 19 and the boiler. This pipe is fitted with a normally closed stop cock 21 to which is connected a crank or arm 22. A pipe 23 serves to convey gas or the like to the burner 12 and in this pipe is mounted a normally open stop cock 24 having a crank or arm 25. A link 26 is arranged between the arms 22 and 25 through which, by manipulation of a handle 27, both stop cocks may be moved simultaneously as suggested by dot and dash linesin Fig. 1. The heating apparatus described herein is of a very intense nature and intended for rapid generation of steam. Consequently the boiler will ordinarily carry a considerable quantity of steam while the machine is in operation. "This steam would tend ordinarily to interfere with or prevent the flow of water through the pipe 20 from the tank to the boiler and this is why the normal flow of gas is cut off at the valve 24e when the valve 21 is opened. 'I show at 28 a gage glass on the outside of the casing 11 for the purpose of indicating the depth of the water in the boiler 10, said gla ss being in communication with the upper and lower portions of the boiler by means of pipes 29 and 3() respectively.

The coil 13 arranged between the boiler' and the burner provides for rapid generation of steam, some of which may pass through the pipe G and another portion of which may act upon the water within the boiler to transform the same into steam. When the supply of water in the boiler requires replenishing, the valve 21 may be opened to allow the water already partially heated in the tank 19 to flow down wardly intothe boiler, and' at this: time. the flow of gas through the pipe 23 may be shut off. When the valve 21 is again closed the flame at the burner may exert its maximum iniuence. The flow of gas through the pipe 23 just referred to means the normal flow for the generation of steam and has nothing whatever to do with the use of a pilot 24; to maintain a taper of flame to re-ignite a normal flow of gas after the valve 24 is openedy and' the valve 21 closed. Any suitable valve 24 in or associated with the pipe .23 may be employed to shut oil the flow of gas from the pipe 23 when the improved device described herein is out of use.
The cloth treating table E comprises any suitable form of supporting means shown as crossed legs 31 arranged in pairs and pivoted together on pivots 32 in axial alinenient with each other. The water of condensation which may collect in the gutter 35 beneath the table top may be discharged through a drain pipe 35.
At 37 l show a distributor in the form of a tube having perforations 37" along its upper surface. This distributor is supported by any suitable means within the gutter 35 and substantially between and parallel to the side walls 36. TheV steam pipe C leads into one end of the distributor and the other end of the distributor is closed. A shield comprising two parts, namely,` a cap 38 and a plate 39, cooperates with the distributer along the upper portion of the gutter for the purpose of coniining the steam to a certain portion of the gutter according to the width of the cloth being treated. The cap 38 conforms to the upper surface of the distributor and is adapted to close certain of the holes 37. Said cap isconnected to and is carried by the plate 39 which is adapted to slide along the upper portion of the gutter.
Any suitable number and form of sup porting and reinforcing members 4.7 for the steam generator may be provided. As shown, however, one of these supporting members is provided with holes C, 29 and 30 whereby the respective pipesC, 29 and 30 have direct and positive support.. .These legs or supports 47 extendupwardly through the casing 11 and preferably bey tween the inner wall of the casing and the asbestos lining 17 therefor. A steam Generator comprising a casing gage glass to the generator on the side thereof adjacent the steam distributor, it will always be in view of the operator who is. stationed likewise adjacent thev distributer.. The purpose of the false bottom 19 of the pre-heater is to prevent thef water of condensation from forming on the top of the tank. The casing is provided with a closed bottom 11 to prevent the heat from striking downwardly against the main support of the structure. It is to benoted that the apparatus may be used to good advantage forI any other purposes than those already set forth, as, for instance, the evaporating of medicaments, sterilizing, of towels, humidifying, etc;
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. VThe herein described steam generator 'comprising a boiler, means to|` heat water within the boiler, said heating meansv including a pipe for fluid fuel', anormally open valve controlling the normal flow of fuel through the pipev and including a bell crank handle, a preheating boiler supported above the main boiler, a pipe leading from one boiler to the other, a. normally closed valve for controlling the.
