Description

c.-c. MILLER. STEAM DOME SEPARATOR AND BOILER S KIMM ER.
APPLICATION FILED 1Am.i3.|9|1.
Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEY tered thus causing the collection of a considerable amount of water in the steam pipes and connections, this water often causing serious hammering in the pipes with the consequent injurious results, and occasionally the bending of a piston rod or breaking of a cylinder head. In the event of a scum or foam being lifted by the steam in this manner, this foam will encounter the baffle plates which will act to effectively shatter the bubbles composing the foam and will separate the moisture thus produced from the steam and collect the same.
Due to the fact that the plates are mounted in overlapping relation, the moisture which collects on the same will flow downthe convexed upper surfaces of the plates toward the peripheries of the same, this moisture flowing from plate 8 on to plate 7 and from plate 7 on to plate 6. A suitable collecting pan 9 is secured in the dome 2 immediately beneath and closely adjacent each corner of bottom plate 6. The moisture which flows. on to bottom. plate 6 as well as the moisture which is collected by this plate, will flow toward the periphery of the plate and about the same and the I inner face of the dome to the corners of the plate from which it will be discharged into the collecting pans 9. A drain pipe 10 communicates with each of the pans 9 and is provided with a suitable control valve 11.
Each drain pipe discharges into a suitabletrap from which the water thus collected is returned to the boiler by a pump, in the usual manner.
By mounting the separating and skim- -ming means directly in the dome the steam is treated so as to remove all moisture be fore it enters-the steam pipes, thus eliminating all danger of moisture being carried into these pipes and the distributing pipes communicating therewith. In this respect my separating and skimming means is materially different from those separators now in use whi-ch are mounted outside of the dome andindependent therefrom. I have found, by practice, that three bafile plates arranged in the manner shown and described are usually sufiicient for a stationary engine of standard construction such as used in connection with steam shovels and the like, though it will be evident that the number of bafiies could be varied to suit-the particular boiler.
. Each of the baffle plates is secured by nut and bolt means to an angle iron frame 12 riveted to the inner face of dome 2. The
flopiee or this patent inay be obtained for inner ends of the plates are held in spaced relation by spacing posts 13 removably se- 6 cured in the same. By mounting the plates in this manner they may be quickly removed from the dome 2 so as to permit easy access to the interior of the same and the boiler for cleaning, repairing, or other purposes.
It will be evident that there may be slight changes made in the construction and arrangement of the different parts of my invention without departing from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such changes, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, in this application in which a preferred form only of my invention is disclosed.
What I claim is 1. In steam skimming and separating means, a boiler, a dome carried by the boiler and communicating with the interior thereof and provided with a steam outlet, a plurality of convexed oppositely directed baffle plates mounted in the dome in superposed spaced relation intermediate said boiler and steam outlet adapted to separate moisture from steam as it flows through the dome, and means for collecting the moisture separated from the steam by said plates and removing it from the dome.
2. In steam skimming and separating means, a boiler, a dome carried byv the boiler and communicating with the interior thereof, a plurality of sectoral oppositely directed baflie plates mounted in the dome in super-posed spaced relation, said plates being convexed longitudinally, moisture collecting pans mounted beneath and closely adjacent each corner of the lowermost one of said plates, and means for optionally draining said pans.
3. In steam skimming and separating means, a boiler, a dome carried by the boiler and communicating directly with the in-' terior thereof, a plurality of sectoral concavo-convex oppositely directed baffle plates mounted in the dome in superposed spaced relation, each of said plates being concaved in the direction of its longitudinal axis, moisture collecting pans mounted beneath and closely adjacent each corner of the lowermost one of said plates, and means for optionally draining said ans.
In testimony whereof aflix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses,
' 1 CHARLES C. MILLER.
