GUSPIDOR-CARRIER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD O. BLANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Readfield, in the county of Waupaca, State 1 of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Guspidor-Carrier; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to improvements 1n cuspidor carriers.

One of its objects is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character for gripping the funnel or mouth of a cusp1 dor to permit the cuspidor to be carried without contact with the hands.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a cuspidor carrier which 1s capable of completely covering the funnel of the cuspidor that the nostrils may not be subjected to the scents arising therefrom. Other objects will appear in the detailed description which follows.

It is to be understood that the invention is not to be confined to the exact forms of Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, and partlcularly Fig. 1, 1 designates a palr of covered grips which are designed to grasp the funnel or mouth of a cuspidor. These grips are semi-circular in plan and when joined together form a circular dish with a depending flange 2 having at 1ts lower end aninturned annular flange 3. each other, suitable carrying members are attached. These carrying members comprise rods 4 and 5 which are rectangular in cross-section and are pivotally united near their lower extremities by the pivot pins 6. Below the pivotal connection, each rod 5 blends into the enlargement 7, the latter terminating in an angled end 8 by means of which the rod 5 is attached to the top of the grip 1 with the aidof suitable rivets 9. Each rod 4 has an enlargement 10 below the pivot pin 6. The extremity 11 of the enlargement 10, however, is not turned at an angle but remains straight, being secured to the flange2by means of suitable rivets 12. Both enlargements 10 are provided with stationary pins 13 and these pins move in circular slots 14 formed in the enlargements 7 concentric with the pivot pins 6. The rods 4 and 5 are assembled in pairs, each pair comprising a rod 4 and a rod 5. Above the pivot pins 6 the two pairs of rods bend in toward each other for a portion of their length and then bend out running parallel to each other for the remainder of their length. At the top a suitable handle 15 is secured between the rod 4 of one pair and the rod 5 of the other pair and an identical handle is similarly secured between the remaining rods 4 and 5, the two handles lying against each other when the grips 1 are in contact.

It will be observed that each grip has connected to it a rod 4 and a rod 5 united at their tops by a handle 15, the rod 5 being connected on top of the grip by the angled end 8 and the rod 4 being connected on the flange 2 of the grip by the extremity 11. The operation of the device is obvious. Separating the two handles 15 will result in separating grips 1, so that they may be placed over the mouth or funnel of the cuspidor. Bringing the two handles 15 together then brings the two grips together, when the annular flange prising the rods 21 and 22, The rods are assembled in pairs by pivot pins 23, each pair constituting a rod 21 and a rod 22. Below the pivot pins 23, the bands 20 are connected to the rods 21 and 22 the ends of one band 20 being connected to the lower extremities of the rods 21 and the other band 20 being similarly connected to the lower extremities of the rods 22. The rods 21 and are rectangular in cross section and below the pivot pins 23 are enlarged. On these enlarged portions, the rods 22 are provided with stationary pins 25 which move in circular slots 26 formed in the enlarged portions of rods 21. The slots 26 are concentric with the pivotpins 23 and the pins 25 are provided with heads which overlie these slots, the object of these headed pins being to prevent the rods 21 and 22 from springing or bending away from each other at their lower extremities, thus keeping the bands 20 in their normal positions with respect to each other. Above the pivot pins 23, the two pairs of rods 21 and 22 bend in toward each other and then bend outward, running parallel for the rest of their length. At the upper extremities, handles 24-. connect the rods together, one handle connecting the rods 22 and the other handle the rods 21.

This form of the invention operates as does that form shown in Fig. 1. Separating the two handles 24: operates to separate the two bands 20 which may then be placed over the mouth or funnel of a cuspidor. On being brought together as a result of having the handles 24 brought together, the bands 20 will engage under the edge of the funnel of a cuspidor, whereupon the latter may be convenient to carry. The object of this form is to cheapen the construction of the device and the bands 20 are made elliptical .to enable them to engage the funnel of a cuspidor without interference from the carrying means comprising the rods 21 and 22. The minor axis of the ellipse which the bands 20 form is designed to be less than the diameter of the tunnel of the cuspidor to be carried, while the major axis is designed to be greater than the funnel diameter. formed on them respectively. These semicircular bends do not liein'the same plane with the lengths of the'rods but in a plane at right angles thereto. The semi-circular bend 32 terminates in an eye 3% and the bend 33 terminates in an eye 35 which loosely engages the eye 3% and connects the two bends together. On the upper extremity of the rod 30 an eye 36 is formed which lies in the same plane as the rods On the upper extremity of the rod 31 a similar eye 37 is formed but this eye is turned at right angles to the length of the rod and loosely engages the eye 36 to connect the two rods together. The manner in which the device in Fig. -7 may be utilized is apparent. The operation of separating the rods 30 and 31 will enable the semi-circular bends 32 and 33 to be placed around the funnel of the cuspidor and the lattermay be carried by the device after the rods 30 and 31 are gether.

What is claimed is:
