Mounted upon hinges 32 near the bottom of each door opening 29 is a grain' car door ,acctlon 33, and the opposite edges of this` Section have guides 34, in which a' second car` door section 35 is mounted, and w ich sioqtlon 35 may be raised and lowered in glndes 31. Projecting inwardly from the flanges forming the ides 34 are bearings 36, m which the shafgtu37 is mounted, and one end' of this shaft 37 has a beveled gebr -38, while the central portion of this shaft has a gear" 39, which is in mesh with tlie rack 40 on the inner face of the grain car door sectlon 35. Mounted in a bearin' of each slde of the car near one side or ge of each door o ening-29 is a stub shaft 41, the inner en of which is provided with a beveled gear 42, while the outer end is provided with a hand wheel 43. The beveled gear 42 meshes with the beveled gear 38 so that by turning the hand wheel 43, the ain car door section 35 may beraised angllowered in lts yguides 31, therebeng a gravity or weight actuated paw] 44 pivoted at 45 on the inlner face of the car door section 35, so as to ratchet over the teeth 31", and to coperatewith any one of said teeth to hold the ion 35 in different raised positions. When the car is used as a hopper car the doors or bot tom sections 58 are swung upwardly and toward 'the ends of the car and down against the inclined led cs2 ofthe opposite sides of the car, which edges are shown in Fi 2 and 3 ofthe drawing. The inner en of the cable 48 is provided with a ring. which may be connected to or disconnected from either of the hooks 51 and 59. When the'ring ofthe cable 48 is connected tothe -hook 51, the door section 53 may be raised 'and lowered on its hinges, but when the ring of said cable is` connected to the hook ,59, the door section 33 is used to form a part of the flat bottom ofthe car. The bottom hinged sections 58 are provided with knobs 60, to be manually grasped for rais in said sections.

In a bottom dump mechanism for cars, the combination of a hopper bottom having flanged discharge openings and chutes swiveled to the fiangcs of said discharge openings, of a division wall separating said discharge openings, and means comprising iat bottom sections foldable from the ends and the sides of the car over the hopper bottom, to form a flat bottom, thereby converting the bottom dump car into ya freight car.

In a grain car door, .a car door opening, a grain car door consistin of two sections, one section being hinge at the bottom of said opening an havin guidesat its opposite ends in which the ot er section is adjustably mounted,'and means whereby the hinged section may be`tilted upwardly and downwardly on its hinges, when -said other section is lowered completely in its guides.

In a grain car door, a car door opening, a grain car door consisting of two sections, one section being hinged at the bottom of said opening and having guides at its opposite ends in which the other section is ,adiustably mounted, the upper portions of the side edges of the door opening having guides to receive the section that is mounted in the ides of the hinged section, when the hin eusection is closed, said slidable section aving a rack, a shaft mounted in bearings of the hinged sec `on, and provided with a gear to engage sa d rack, a beveled gear on one end of said shaft, and means to engage said beveled gear to rotate the shaft to raisel the slidable section, one of the guides of the upper parts of one side edge of the door openingJ having ratchet teeth, and means carried y the slidable section consisting of a pawl to en e the teeth of the ratchet bar on the slida le section, to hold the slidable section in different adjusted positions when raised.
