ROTARY MOTOR.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. MGCULLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Motors, of which the following is a specication.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved type of rotary motor in which the cylinders thereof are arranged in pairs, each cylinder of each pair being arranged at an approximate right'angle to the other.
Another' object is to provide an improved motor with revolubly mounted cylinders, the pistons thereof being reciprocably mounted in said cylinders.
A further object is to provide an improved motor that is adapted to be operated by fluid pressure, in which there will be no dead center relative to the action of the pistons and ports.
A still further object is to provide this improved motor with a minimum number of parts.
Other and further objects will appear in the speciication and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,

Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line V-V, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates the base which supports the standard 2. Formed on top of said standard are a pair of bearings 3, said bearings having caps 4. Mounted in the bearings 3 is a horizontal shaft 5, one end of said shaft being mounted in the bearing 6. Mounted on one end of the shaft 5and secured thereto, are a Hy wheel 7 and a pulley 8.
Secured to said shaft between one of the bearings 3 and the bearing 6 is a member 9. Said member is arranged in a horizontal position and at right angles to a vertically arranged member 10. Said member 10 1s revolubly mounted on the vertical post 11.

The upper end of said post is supported in the sleeve portion 12 of the bearing 6 and secured thereto by the pin 13. The lower end of said post is secured to, or formed integral with, a hollow member 14. rlhis member 14 is mounted on a fluid chest 15, said chest having an inlet chamber 16 and an outlet chamber 17 Vformed therein.
Formed integral with the fluid chest 15 is a supply connection 18, said connection 18 having a fluid supply pipe 19 connected therewith. IThis supply pipe 19 leads to the inlet chamber 16, and to the chamber 2O formed in the hollow member 14. Formed on the fluid chest 15 is a pipe connection 21 which leads from the exhaust chamber 17. Mounted on said connection 21 is an exhaust -pipe 22. This iiuid chest 15 is seated on the seating portion 23 of the base portion 1 and standard 2, and is secured thereto by the bolts 24. v
Formed in the member 9 are horizontally arranged cylinders 25, each of said cylinders having a closed end as indicated at 26. Formed in the member 10 are vertically arranged cylinders 27, each of said cylinders being closed at one end as indicated at 2S. These cylinders are arranged in pairs, each of said cylinders 9 adapted to aline with one D of the cylinders 10. Reciprocably mounted in each pair of cylinders 9 and 10 is a piston 29. Each of said pistons comprises right angled bent portions 30 and 31. Each of the portions 30 of the pistons is mounted in a cylinder 25 of the member 9. Each of the portions-31 of the pistons is mounted in a cylinder 27 of the member 10. These pistons 29 are tubular in construction, there being a passageway formed therethrough from end to end. Carried by said pistons are packing rings 32.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 3, which is a horizontal section through the member 10, ports 33 are shown leading to the lowerend of the cylinders 27. Formed in the wall of the hollow member 14, and leading from the chamber 20, is an opening 34, said opening 34 being in alinement with the ports 33. Formed in the wall of the member 14, opposite to the inlet opening 34, is a downwardly extending exhaust port 35, said exhaust port leading to the exhaust chamber 17 of the fluid chest 15.
In the operation of this improved rotary motor, when Huid under pressure is admitted to the inlet chamber 16 of the fluid chest l5 and to the chamber 20, iiuid pressure communication will be made to one of the inlet ports 33 oi the member 10 through the opening 311i, thereby creating a pressure in one of the cylinders 27. This pressure will also be communicated to one of thecylinders through the respective piston 29. This will cause .the pressure to bear against the ends 2G and 28 of a pair of cylinders 25 and 27, thereby forcing the piston 29 from said cylinders. This action or reciproeation will revolve the members 9 and 10.
In order to male the operation more clear, from an inspection of Fig. 3, it will be seen that the port 33,`which is indicated by A, is receiving pressure from the opening 34:, whereas the port B is in a position of eX- haust, and the port C is cut off. Inasmueh as the member l0 is revolved, upon reaching the edge D of the opening Sel, the port C will begin to receive pressure until it reaches the edge E of said opening, and the piston operated in conjunction with said port will travel on expansion from saidy edge Euntil the center line F is reached, after which thel piston will be Jorced: inwardly into its cylinders from said line F to the line G. As said port reaches the edge I, it is put in a position of exhaust with the exhaust port 35 until the port passes the edge J of said exhaust port, said port C being ready for a fresh supply of pressure as it passes the line G. It is, therefore, seen how the ports A and B will receive a like treatment as just described of the port C during each revol lut'ion of the member 10.
In a motor ot this improved character, as the pistons are forced outwardly 'from their respective cylinders, the members 9 and l0 will be revolved in a manner similar to a pair of bevel gears meshing together. As the member 9 is secured to the shaft 5, power can be transmitted from said shaft. This construction o'l' rotary motor is very simple, and there are but few parts, and practically any kind of pressure can be utilized to operate it.
What I claim is:
l. In a motor, a pair of revolubly mountin each of said members, said cylinders of one of said members being arranged at .right angles to the cylinders. of said other members, a plurality of pistons having cylinder engaging port-ions adapted to engage each alining pair of saidcylinders, a port for each cylinder formed in one of said members, a hollow post tory one of said members, said; ports adapted to communicatewith said post, a shaft for said other member, and a bearing mounted on said post for 4the support of one end of said shaft. l
3. `In a motor, a pair oli revolubly mounted members, a series of cylinders formed in each of said members, said cylinders being open at one end, said cylinders of each of said members having their open ends adjacent each other, saidv cylinders of one of said members being positioned so as to aline withv the cylinders of said other member, a hollow piston reciprocally mounted in each alined pair of said dvlinders, each of said hollow pistons providing means of `communication from the closed end of one of said cylinders to the closed end of the other' said cylinder' of each of said pairs of cylinders, a hollow post extending into one of said members, a shaft for said other member, said shaftbeing supported by said post, ports formed in said I member of said post, saidv ports leading to said cylinders of said post member from said post.
