citizen of the United States, residing at Brocktonin thecounty of Plymouth and State. of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pieced Outer- Soles, of which the following is a specification. 1 J v V This invention relates to a full length pieced outer Sole, and it has for its "object to provide an outer sole of improved construction, whereby its cost is reduced and other desirable results are attained.

The invention consists in the improve-- ments which I will now proceed to describe and claim:

Figure 1 represents a bottom view of a shoe including an outer sole embodying my invention, a portion of the veneer piece hereinafter referred to being broken away.

My improved outer sole may be embodied in a shoe, the upper, outer sole and inner sole of which are assembled and connected in any suitable manner.

My improved outer sole, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, is composed of three parts or pieces, namely, a relatively thick tap piece 12, a shank and heel-seat piece 13, said pieces meeting to form a, transverse joint extending across the sole from edge to edge, and a relatively thin sole-shaped veneer piece 14, including integral fore and shank portions forming the entire exposed bottom surface of the sole.

Each of said pieces 12 and 13 has an end face of greater width than the thickness of the sole. In the embodiment of the invention shown by Figs-1' and 2, the end face of the piece 12 is indicated by 12 while the end face of the piece 13 is indicated by-13 each of said faces being of the angular form shown by Fig. 2, and formed by cutting away some of the material of each piece,

are formed by beveling or scarfing the pieces a 12 and 13.

The pieces having thedescribed mental end faces are united by abutting said complefaces together after they havebeen coated with a suitable cement, although, if,desired, the reduced end portions maybe united by metallic fastenings, or by stitches passed through the reduced portions and;

used either with or without cement.

The veneer iece 14 is formed to coverthe under sides 0 the pieces. 12 and 13, and extend across the joint formed by the meeting 5 the pieces 12 and 13, and the portion of the veneer piece covering said joint are so located that they are-wholly raised above the wear-sustaining portion of the outer sole, as

indicated by Fig. 2, and as indicated approximately by the dotted line a-a in Fig. 1, said line denoting the rear edge of the area of the bottom of the forepart of the sole which is subjected to wear by contact with the ground.

When the shoe is subjected to wear, the fore portion of the, veneer piece sustains wear to a limitedextent, and when said portion is worn through, the piece 12 is exposed and .sustains further wear. A portion of the veneer which is not subjected to wear permanently covers and reinforces the joint formed -by the meeting ends of thepi'eces- 12 and 13,

and is not affected by the wearing away of the fore portion.

The pieces=12 and 13 form a ;relatively thick pieced sole body. If .desired, the veneer piece 14 may be secured to said sole body by a layer 16, applied as a coating. to the outer, sides of said pieces, of a plastic, adhesive mixture, which may include any suitable cement and granular wear-resisting material such as powdered carborundum. The veneer piece 14 is applied to the outer side of the layer 16 while and composed the latter is in a plasticand adhesive condi- ,tion. When the layer 16 is hardened by drying it adheres firmly to the pieces 12 and '13 and to the veneer piece 14, the fore portions of said veneer pieces and layer successively sustaining Wear on the shoe bottom. Thescribed construction is that the tap piece 12 may be made of a material such as chrome leather, which, although relatively expensive, is well adapted to resist wear, the piece 13 being made of a less expensive material, the relatively small cost of which compensates for-the cost of the tap piece.

I claim;

1. A pieced outer sole comprising a rela tively thin sole-shaped veneer piece, including integral fore and shank portions forming the entire exposed bottom surface of the sole, a relatively thick tap piece, and a relatively thick shank piece cemented to said veneer piece and having complemental meeting end faces, united to form a joint which is covered by a portion of said veneer piece, said joint and oint-covering portion eing located wholly in a raised portion of the sole which is above the acting tread face thereof and is not exposed to wear, said veneer constituting a continuous uninterrupted sole face, the fore portion of which is adapted to sustain wear to a limited extent, the said joint-covering portion of said veneer permanently covering and reinforcing said oint.
