The plate 17 is also provided with a circular recess 19 which intersects the 0H- set hole 18. The intersecting sides of the Hole" 18 I-witlrthe =recess'l9 extend at a slant or in other words intersect, the recess 19 ,at an angle greater than ninety degrees so that after the p atel'l hasibeenslid overthe ou 15, the stem 13 may he moved into enga. ement, withthe sidesof the hole 18 and gui ed directly into the recess 19, said position bei ng shonfln in Figs. 1 and 4 oftlie drawing. When in this position, the outer edge ofthe clamping plate engages the portion of the sheet 1 which is immediately adjacent said hand hole 2, and when the nut 15 is tightened, the plate 17 acts as resisting means to consequently draw the hand hole plate into its closed position, it being noted that a gasket 20 is interposed between the flanged portion-12 of the plate 9 so as to form a tight seal.
By haying the nut 15 recessed and the outer surface of the plate 15 convex, a por- ,tion, of theconvexsurfaee will project, within themecess of the nutadjaeent it and therebyjorm a snug sliding fitbetween the nut arid the said convex surfaceof the clamp ing plate so that there isno shearing action betweenthe nut and the clamping plate.
, When it is desired to remove the hand hole plate, i islm erely necessaryto slightly turn the nut 15, so that the clamping plate may he slid into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 5 after which the, plate may be removed over the nut, and the hand hole plate, by being turned, may be readily removed from the hand hole 2 without entirely reoving the nut:15- i his combination of arts is. particularly desirable andseryiceabl since prior to my invention .0 combining these elements and formin the .hand hole in .th manner particular y set forth, the .iormation. and coupling of hand hole plates and thei r securing means, was, extremely tedious and pensi and furthermore they were net eficient in operation. h a

The additional metal thus secured forms a positive hearing for the nut and the corners of the off-set opening are sufficiently rounded so as to prevent shear.
In some instances in making the hand hole 2 as illustrated inFig. 3, I first make the large hole 5 either by punching it slightly smaller than thedesired hole and afterward reaming it to full size, or by boringthis hole out to the full size and afterward forming the smaller recesses 7 and 8 by means of align l a 1 ,Furthermore, it will be noted that, the circular lips 11, which fit within the recesses 7 and 8, keep the. hand-holeplates from turning when the nut, is being-tight ened and thus prevents the tearing of the gaskets. l 1 It will be further noted that pthe nut 15 is recessed both on its inner andoutersurface. These recesses protect the threads in the nuts, and prevent the threads from becoming .up-set .or from cutting which would happeeifi the threads ;bore directly against the-convex surface of the plate 1.7. Furthermore, by having the nut lreeessed asshown at lfito conform to. the curvature of i the convex surface, of. the plate 1.1% adj azcent .the'center of the latter, the; construction is such as to compel theyoke Etc com'estm-a central position with respectto the nutiend the stem of the handhole plate'i- Eu While I. have described my invention as taking a .paliticulam for-m, it-will be undenstood thetithe various pertsof my invention may bechangedwithout departingyfmmthe spirit thereof, and; hence I fie mot-limit myselitmthe precise constellation set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to meke such changeszandaltcraitionsia s twirlycome withinthe scope cftheap endedielaims.-- K I Having thusdescr ed-myfinventiomwhat I claim as *new and desire. to secure: lb}: Iiet ters Patent is: fish. 1. 2. The combination of a boiler plate having a hand hole, a hand hole plate having a flanged portion forming a covering for the hole and engaging the inner surface of the plate adjacent the hole, a threaded stem on said hand hole plate, a nut on said stem,
