ADVERTISING NOVELTY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented fiept. 4t, 1917.
Application filed June 10, 1912. Serial N 0. 702,816.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST S. JAnos, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Advertising Novelties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an advertising novelty and consists in the provision of apparatus for symbolically indicating the superiority of hosiery as-regards its capability for wear at vulnerable points. More.
specifically, my invention aims to provide a means for fancifully representing to the casual observer that certain hosiery, the meritsof which are under consideration, is capable of a comparatively great wear at the heel, toe and knee. It is further designed to not only subject these particular points of the stocking to wear, but to subject them to wear practically identical in nature to the Wear to which these points are normally subjected while on the foot of the wearer.
Furthermore, my invention contemplates the provision of supplemental indicating means which are intermittently and automatically efiective' to attract or direct attention to the wearing action. This supplemental indicating means is desirably efiective at the same time each action occurs and has been shown in the present instance as being of a luminous nature.
My invention may vary as to form and embodiment, but the preferred apparatus utilized is shown in the accompanying draw- .ings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement,
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of my apparatus,
Fig. 3 is a sect-ion taken on line 83 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a detail in plan of a double cam mefor a purpose to be hereinafter described, f
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of this structure shown in Figs. 4 and 5,
Fig. 7 is a side elevation in detail of a means for operating a register which I desirably attach to my device,
Fig. 8 is a section taken on line 88 of Fig. 7
Fig. 9 is a detail view of a slidable arrow plate structure which is calculated to attract attention of the observer to the rubbing of the knee, and,
Fig. 10 is a section taken on line 1010 of Fig. 9.
In the drawings, my invention is shown as comprising what may be termed a showcase having vertical standards 1 and cross pieces 2 and 3, which support the display portion proper of box-like formation and designated 4. This box-like formation in turn is divided into compartments 5 and 6 and in the compartment 5 which has a transparent front, there is disposed an artificial limb 7 desirably inclosed in a stocking and capable of movement in an approximately elliptical path of travel under the ultimate control of a motor 8 driving a worm gear 9 by means of a worm 10, such worm gear 9 being mounted upon a shaft 11 carrying a gear 12 which in turn meshes with a gear wheel 13 upon a shaft 14. This shaft 14 is primarily equipped with a double cam structure (shown best in Figs. 4, 5 and 6) as comprising an inner cam 15 and an outer cam 16 constructed for cooperation with an arm 17 pivotally supported at one end from a link 18, in turn pivoted to a pendent 19 upon the upper wall of the display portion 4. The arm 17 is peculiar in its formation, in that it carries a heel member 20 carrying upon its upper end a pierced lug 21 to which is attached a tension spring 22 permanently secured at its opposite end. This arm 17 extends in cooperative relation with the double cam structure and when in such cooperative relation, the arm is so disposed as to be forced rearwardly by the inner cam 15 operating upon the heel 20 and then upwardly by the outer cam 16 operating upon the arm 17 a The forward movement of the arm 17 is automatically efiected by the spring 22 assuming it'to be in normalposition in Fig; 2, is caused to move rcarwardly, then upwardly, under the successive influence of the double cam. elements and rsfinally returned to normal position by the spring 22 simultaneously with the lowering of the lifting cam element.
It bein vunderstoodthat the limb/7 asu PI. t i i i i r 1 l sumes this same general path of travel at all times, attention is directed to the main rubbing or wearing surface 23 and the auxiliary rubbing or wearing surfaces 2 1 and'25, This rubbing surface 23 is desirably a portion of the floor 26 of the casing 5, whereas the auxiliary rubbing or wearing elements 2 1 and 25 are desirably inthe form'of blocks supported by pins 27' and 28 and yieldable against the springs 29. These. rubbing ele" m'eiitsQiand 25 are accurately disposed to receive. the rubbing impact of the toe andv heel respectively of the limb and to receive such rubbing impact with a yielding resistance. Disposed in proximity to these wear: ing or rubbing blocks 24 and 25, I desirablyprovide signal lights 30 and 31in the form of globes fed by wires 32 and 33 respectively. Also, I desirably provide an indi catingdevice beneath the surface 23 and this indicating device comprises a light 34- in the form of a globe fed by electric wires 35. The faces of the inclosure's for the lights 30 and 31 are preferably in the form of plates 36 and 37 having cut-out arrows pointing toward the point of contact of the toe and heel respectively with thewearing or rubbing blocks 2% and 25. The. light 3& has an inclosure with a face plate 38v cut away as at 39 and having a shdable,
arrow plate 4L0 disposed in the rear thereof and in turn carrying a glass plate 41. This slide plate is preferably provided with a flange et2 and is rcciprocable under the conn trol of a reach rod 13 connected by a link l-l to the-arm 17. Because of thls connection,
the rearward movement of the arm 17 which serves to move the knee into rubbing contact with thea surface 23, likewise serves to move the slide plate rearwardly through the medium of the link at and reach rod 43 and in consequence thereof the arrow moves in substantial coincidence with the: knee ,of the-limb 7.
My invention is preferably equipped with a registering device as shown at 45 which is caused to register by the lifting of a lever arm e16 and the lifting of this lever arm is desirably effected by a cam slide 4:? shown best in Figs. 7 and S and comprising a block &8 and a plate 49 secured thereto. This block 418 is bored as at 50 for slidably, mounting upon a guide rod 51. The'block is likewise connected to a reach rod 52 which is in turn connected to a lever 53 pivotally supported as at1.5 l fromathesbaseu of the display portion A. This lever 53 is .normally, forced rearwardly by a pin 55 upon the gear wheel 13 which moves into contact therewith -once inevery rotation ofthe said gear wheel 13 and its"sl1'aft"14l. The lever ;-is,..returned by a spring 56 being stopped on its return by a cushioned frame 57 By, reference to F ig. 2, it willbe seen that rearward movement of the lever operates through the medium of the link 52 and the plate 49 of the block 48 to raise the arm i6 and operate-the\register 45: Thisregister a5 is supplemented by a hood 58 having a light 59-thereinin the form of'an electric globe, fed by -wires-60.- 7
The motor may be fed through-the main" lines 61 and 62 under thecontrol of a button switch 63- andit 'isdesirable to providea fuse-box 64, it being understood that the" lines (Sl-and 62 1nay"be--led=into the motor in the customary manner" These lines- 61 and 62; ar'edesirably provided with a shunt 65-under-the control ofa button switch66" and one-line from-each lamp leads to a con-- tact bar .67 within the-shunt, while the other" wires ofathe lamps areconnected to contact fingersGS-L Thesefingers 68 are of the form common to switches of this type and -cooperate with a rotating contact element 69 upomthe shaft 14. Thereis likewise pro vid'ed .a finger 70. which is electrically? con nected to the switch 66-: This 1 completes Y the-- various circuits andit will beuincler'stood that the operation of-the switch is deemedto successively light-the lamps at=predete-r-- mined instants.-- For instance,- when-thetoe of the limb 7 is rubbing upon the" block 241,- the' circuit is'-closed through the lamp 30 causing a lighting of the same and a consequent attraction of the attention thereto. hen the heelis rubbing upon the rubbing block 25-, theciro'ui-t is closed through;the lamp 31 which likewise results in the light ing of that lamp. WVhenthe knee ofathe limb is rubbing upon the surface -23,nthe circuit is closed through the-lamp 3e and this lamp is lighted. Thelighting of the lamp 59 of theregister desirably takes placeshortly after the close of the rubbing operation upon the knee of the limb, although-it will be understood that-the ti-me of these operations may be varied at will. :1 V
In claiming my invention, I have specified the knee portion of the artificial clothed member as being subjected to a wearing action. As the knee portion affected in actual wear, is that portion represented by the underside! of the'leg form, or, in other words, that portion covering-theknee cap, I have provided amachine-for acting upon this portion and this interpretation is to be given wherever the knee is claimed as being subjected to a wearing action.
It will be apparent that I have provided an advertising novelty which is feasible and attractive and which by means of the plurality of successive operations, enables me to successfully and symbolically indicate to the observer that certain portions of a stocking, namely, those portions most generally subject to wear, are peculiarly strong and durable.
What I claim is:
