  • This invention relates to the gullets used for discharging the water of the streets, yard and similar surfaces or other liquids into the sewers or drains and its object is to provide an improved construction of said gullets, whereby a tight and perfect closure is obtained while the gullet is in dry condition, thus preventing the emanation of deleterious gases from the sewers and through the gullets gratings in such places where they are located, as it occurs with the present gullets which are very undesirable on account of the disagreeable odor produced by said gases.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1917.
*Application filed March a, 1917. Serial No. 153,440.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAnonLrNo BRAVO, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Habana, Republic of Cuba, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gullets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the gullets used for discharging the water of the streets, yard and similar surfaces or other liquids into the sewers or drains and its object is to provide an improved construction of said gullets, whereby a tight and perfect closure is obtained while the gullet is in dry condition, thus preventing the emanation of deleterious gases from the sewers and through the gullets gratings in such places where they are located, as it occurs with the present gullets which are very undesirable on account of the disagreeable odor produced by said gases. On the other hand by virtue of this improved construction the breeding of the mosquitoes will be prevented which always find an appropriate place for their reproduction in the surfaces of stagnant water that remain inside the siphons and pipes used in the sewer system of the cities.
The invention is described with reference to the figures of the annexed drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a diametral vertical section, partly in elevation of a gullet constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a diametral vertical section of the gullet on a larger scale on a perpendicular plane to that of the section shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a lower plan view thereof, also on a larger scale.
This gullet presents its cylindrical casing 1 provided with a flange 2 and an inner shoulder 3 for receiving the grate 4 as in the common construction, but it is provided substantially at the middle of its height with a diametral bar 5 of triangular cross section which is integral with casing 1 and presents upwardly one of its edges and under this bar 5 there are mounted on a diametral bar 6 parallel to bar 5 and passing through holes 7 in the wall of easing 1 two semicircular plates 8 oppositely fixed on two pairs of hinges 9 and 10 mounted on said shaft 6, said plates 8 tending to remain on the same plane against the bottom face of bar 5 under the elastic action of a helical spring 11 wound upon shaft 6 the bent ends 11 of which come into contact with the face of said semicircular plates 8, constituting, when they remain in the same plane, a disl: that rests with its marginal portion against a shoulder 12 formed in the wall of casing 1.
The grating 4: recess on its supporting shoulder 3 by means of a lug 13 projecting downwardly from the end of its central bar 1 and which i received in a groove 14 of corresponding shape formed in the wall of casing 1 just above the upper edge of bar 5, whereby the circumferential movement of the grating 4C is prevented or that same may turn and the bars 4' of grating 41: may come parallel to bar 5 and thus any piece of paper or leaf that may enter in the gullet through the spaces between bars 1 of gratin 4 does not find any obstruction by bar 5, but this serves as a guide for conducting the water. and the leaf material carried thereby, and at the same time said bar 5 serves for covering the joint between the two semicircular plates 8.
Supposing that the gullet is resting on a drain tube 15 as commonly used in sewer works, at the upper part of said tube or near the gullet it is branching off a lateral pipe 16 of much less diameter than main tube 15 which is extended to communicate with the atmosphere and serves as a ventilator, since it will discharge into the atmosphere those gases, that in absence of this arrangement would collect themselves under the semicircular plates 8 which close the outlet and which gases must be permitted to escape in order to avoid their accumulation, which would surely occasion the bursting of the gullet due to an excessive pressure of the accumulated gases.
The helical spring 11 is so regulated that no matter how small be the quantity of water that may fall in the gullet through the grating 5, its weight will turn down the semicircular plates 8 on the shaft 6, against the elastic action of spring 11, said water then discharging into the drain tube 15 toward the drain or sewer the semicircular plates 8 turning immediately to their closed position on bar 5.
As it can be seen the closure provided by these plates 8 is a tight one while the gullet is dry, and no gases can pass out therethrough.
It is obvious that the form of the gullet can vary as well as the arrangement thereof, since it can be placed in a vertical and in an inclined position, without deviating from the spirit of the invention which is pointed out in the following claim:
In a gullet of the character described, in combination, a cylindrical casing, a grate resting on said casing, a shaft mounted in said casing underneath of said grate, two semi-circular plates, hinges for said plates mounted on said shaft, and a helical spring wound upon the shaft with its bent ends in contactwith the lower face of said plates for holdingthem in-one and the same plane but allowing them to drop upon the trickling of water through said grate, a diametral bar of triangular cross-section integral with said casing and covering the joint between the two hinged plates, a sewer pipe supporting the gullet, and a drain pipe branching off from the sewer pipe for the draining or exhaust and escape of the sewer gases. 7
