MARKER.
Specification of Letters iatnt. Pat enttgd Aug, 21, 1917.
Application filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,817.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN F. QAmNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Markers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to markers for laying 01f fields prior to the planting of crops in rows.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a marker which embodies a plurality of marking devices adapted to be adjusted toward and away from each other whereby the marker may be utilized in laying out rows diiferent distances apart.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a marker of the type named including improved means for adjusting the marking devices toward and away from each other and for locking said devices in a desired adjusted position.
l Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a marker constructed in accordance with the invention, the marking devices being shown in an adjusted position in dotted lines;
Fig. 2, a side view of same;
Fig. 3, a section on the line 3? of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the improved marker is shown as comprising a plurality of beams 10, 11 and 12. The beams 10 and 11 have pivotally connected thereto levers 13 and 1 1 and the free ends of corresponding levers 18 and 14 are pivotally connected by means of bolts 15 the lower ends of corresponding levers Band 19 are pivotally connected by means of bolts 20 the lower ends of which are pivotally engaged through a connecting rod 21, while the upper endof the rearmost bolt 20 has pivoted thereon a bracket 22.
Rigidly secured to the beam 11 adjacent the rear end thereof are transverse bars 23 and 24, the ends of said bars overlying the beams 10 and 12 respectively and being provided with longitudinal slots 25 through which respectively project pins 26 carried by the beams 10 and 12. Mounted upon the bars 23 and 24: between the beams 11 and 12 is a toothed segment 27 upon which is pivoted an operating lever 28 carrying a spring pawl 29 adapted to cooperate with the segment 27. The lower end of the lever 28 is connected to the bracket 22 by a link 28 whereby oscillation of the lever 28 will move the beam 12 toward and away from the beam 11. Mounted upon the bars 23 and 24 between the beams 10 and 11 is a toothed segment 30 upon which is pivoted an operating lever 31 carrying a spring pawl 32 adapted to cooperate with'the segment 30. The lower end of the lever 31 is connected to the bracket 17 by a link 81 whereby oscillation of the lever 31 will move the beam 10 toward and away from the beam 11. Mounted on the rear ends of the beams 10, 11 and 12 respectively are cultivator blades 33, while a seat 34: is mounted upon the rear end of the beam 11.
Secured to the forward ends of the beams 10, 11 and 12 so as not to-interfere with the adjustment of the beams toward and away from each other is a suitable draft tongue 35 36 whereby the device may be drawn along the ground through the medium of draft animals.
The intermediate beam 11 has pivotally connected to its forward end the tongue 36 to the under side of which is pivoted at 37 the forward ends of rearwarclly diverging links 38 the rear ends of which are pivoted at 39 to the short links 40 which are attached to the forward ends of the side beams 10 and 12 whereby to permit of the adjustment of said side beams through the medium of the several toggle joints described.
What is claimed is A marker comprising an intermediate beam, side beams on either side of the intermediate beam, a plurality of toggle joints connecting each side beam with said inter- Copies of this patent may be ob'tained'-for of said bars, lever actuating means mounted upon said bars, and connections between said means and said" brackets for actuating the latter to adjust said toggle joints when said 15 lever actuated means is operated.
In testimony whereof, I afl ix my signa- "tune, in the presence of two witnesses.
