FEED-WATER HEATER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES BROWN STAN- WOOD, a citizen of the United States, and re.- siding at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and Stateof Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Water Heaters, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to an improvement in feed water heaters and purifiers.
The objects of the invention are to produce certain, new and useful structural features and combinations, having characteristics coordinating to improve the elficiency and economy of operation; the embodiment being of superior structural simplicity and convenient usage.
The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the acthis specification, in which companying drawings, forming a part of Figure 1 is a central vertical section.

The cylinder 1 is the water heater and purifier, enveloped by a shell 2, providing a heating jacket for the cylinder. The lateral jacket space is divided into a steam inlet compartment 3, and outlet compartment 4,
by means of the diametrically disposed vertical partitions 5, 6, the ports 7, 8, being the inlet and outlet ports respectively. These partitions stop short of both the top and bottomof the shell, then from the inlet the "steam flows longitudinally of the shell in opposite directions, thence over the top and bottom of the cylinder to the outlet at an opposite side.
Steam will also surround the upper marginal portion of the cylinder, occupying the restricted space defined by the converging portions of the cylinder and shell heads 9, 10, respectively. The upper head 10 of the shell is a dished annulus, the flange rim of which is interiorly united to the sides of the shell, and having a central manhole orifice. The cylinder upper head 9 is marginally arched, the outer periphery being secured to the sides of the cylinder, the inner periphery being the downturned flange 11, the coincident orifices of the heads constituting the upper manhole. This unitary structureis vertically supported by a frame '21.- The water inlet 22 in the bottom of the cylinder at one side of the manhole, terminates in a rectilineal fitting 23 on the floor of the cylinder having outlets 24 at the T-couplings of thepipe sections constituting the fitting, discharging streams of water tangentially towardthe sides of the cylinder from different points around the manhole and preferably inprox- 'i'mity to the heated walls'of the cylinder.
The water outlet 25 is at the top of the cylinder, approximately over one branch ofthe inlet fitting. A safety valve 26 is preferably provided for the heater. i I
In the jacket space adjacent the steam inlet and outlet ports are preferably placed angle- iron bathe plates 27, 28, for separating oil, irrespective of the direction of steam flow, which may be drained at the bottom of the jacket through the draw-01f 29. The
' cylinder may be-drainedthrough a draw-off 30 in the bottom head 16 thereof.
Preferably, and as shown in'Fig. 3, the
cylinder head opening is oval, itsgreatest diameter being smaller than the diameter of the circular opening of the shell head,
thus exposing a marginal portion of the interior periphery of the shell head, the cylinder opening being straddled by'the arch brackets, the ends of which are seated on said exposed marginal portion of the shell head.
The water when introduced into the cylinder through the several discharge nozzles or outlets 24, is directed against the heated cylinder wall, and in such direction to induce spiral currents upon and around the I cylinder. The currents subside toward the center of the cylinder. Thus the incoming I water in an active state whirls within the highest heat zone of the cylinder and becomes relatively passive toward the center of the cylinder, approximately establishing a dead water core into which the-impurities are induced, so as to descend upon the base of the cylinder. 5 The heated water is taken cylinder and spaced therefrom to provide a steam jacket space for the cylinder, said cylinder at ,each end having a centrally apertured convex head and said shell at each end having a centrally apertured head, each tangent to its respective cylinder head with which it joins at and around said apertures, forming a jacket space at the opposite ends of said cylinder, and said apertures at each endforming a common opening into the cylinder, and a removable closure plate for sealing said openlng.

A feed water heater and purifier comprising a heater cylinder and an enveloping shell providing asteam jacket for the cylin- =der,. said cylinder at each end having a centrally apertured convex head and said shell at each end having a centrally apertured head, each tangent to its respective cylinder head with which it joins at and around said apertures, forming a jacket space at the opposite ends of said cylinder, and said apertures at each end formlng a common opening into the cylinder, a removable closure therefor, a water inlet pipe within and at the base of the cylinder extending around the head opening and provided with a plurality of discharge outlets, arranged to discharge streams of water against the cylinder, a water outlet at the upper portion of the cylinder, vertical partitions between the shell and cylinder dividing the jacket space into chambers communicating at their ends, and ports through said shell providing a steam inlet and outlet for said chamber.

A feed water heater and purifier comprising a heater cylinder and an enveloping shell providing a steam jacket, said cylinder at each end having a centrally apertured convex head and said shell at each end havmg a centrally apertured head, each tangent to its respective cylinder head with which it joins at and around said apertures, forming a jacket space at the opposite ends of said cylinder, and said apertures at each end forming a common opening into the cylinder, a removable closure plate therefor, a water inlet within and at the base of the cylinder extending around the head opening and arranged to discharge several streams of water against the cylinder, a water outlet at the upper portion of the cylinder, vertical partitions between the cylinder and shell I dividing the jacket space into chambers communicating at their ends, ports through said shell and at relative opposite sides, providing a steam inlet and outlet, and'longitudinal baffle plates in the jacket space at said ports. f
