BAYONET.
To all whom t may concern; .j
. Be it known that I, GRANT HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of, Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new fand Improved Bayonet, of-which the following is a specification. .y My invention relates to the class of vdevices above named, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that may be readily and securely fastened in place, and one that is extremely strong and durable.
One form of bayonet embodying my in-...
vention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a bayonet embodying my invention shown as attached to the muzzle of a gun barrel.
Fig. 2 is a detail, back, edge view, scale enlarged, of the handle and a portion of the blade of my improved bayonet.
Fig. 3 is a view in central longitudinal section through the handle showing the manner of attachment to a gun clip.
Fig. 4 isa detail view in cross section through the handle about midway of its length.
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a slightly different form of finger piece.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the muzzle end of a gun barrel and 6 the front clip mounted thereon as in a common form of construction and having the usual T-shaped lug 7 My improved bayonet consists of a blade 8 of any ordinary form and construction having a shank 9 of suitable shape projecting on the opposite side of a guard 10 from the blade, said shank being comparatively thin. A head 11 is slotted as at 12 to receive the end of the shank 9 that is secured in said slot as by means of rivets or similar devices. The head 11 is thicker than the shank 9 and grip pieces 24 are secured to the shank between the edges of the head and the guard 10. These grips may be formed of wood, bone or other suitable material in a manner common to devices of this class.
A T-shaped groove 13 is formed at the back of the head 11 for the purpose of receiving the lug? on the gun clip. A well 14 opens from the bottom of this T-shaped Specification of Letters Patent,
slot and an opening 15 extends through the bottom of the well to the front edge of the head. -A headed locking. bolt 16 is located in the lwell 14, the shank-17 of the bolt extending through a spring18, seated ,onA the bottom of the well. A finger piece 19 islocated in a slot 20 in the front edge of the head 11, this finger piece being rigidly secured to and supported ,by the shank 17,'a hole in theinger piece receiving said shank. In the `preferred form of `construction the slot 2O is inclined as shown in Fig. 3 and the finger piece .19 isqshaped to conformrto the contour of the head except as to its end 21 which projects and serves as a means for operating the finger 'piece that nicely its the slot 20 and affords a convenient means for withdrawing the locking bolt from behind the lug 7, in which position it secures the bayonet in place, and as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A hole 23 in the guard 10 receives the muzzle end of the barrel 5 in an ordinary manner of fastening. j
The form of finger piece shown in Fig. 5 is similar to that hereinabove described with the exception that it projects crosswise of the handle instead of lengthwise thereof, this Enger piece 24 projecting at opposite sides of the handle so that its end may be grasped between the thumb and finger whereby the locking bolt 16 may be readily operated to releasefthe bayonet.
Vhile I have shown and described herein a satisfactory construction of device em.
bodying my invention, this may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
