INVENTOR A TTORNEYS a Z a l A rig .W m m I M 0 1% w M a M w m w WITNESSES position, and to provide a clutch member CHARLES A. HAAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR-HOLDER.
Application filed. April 28, 1917. SerialNo. 165,175.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HAAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Elmhurst, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Door-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to door checks or door holders provided with a locking and releasing clutch plate engaging a bolt for locking the latter in position and such, for instance, as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 660,240, granted to August Arens on October 23, 1900.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved door holder arranged to hold the 'door in any desired having a gripping jaw which can be readily removed for sharpening purposes or replaced by a new one without requiring removal of the door holder from the door.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of apivoted clutch plate provided with a removable gripping jaw adapted to engage the bolt.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an enlarged cross section of the door holder shown applied to a door;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the door holder on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of theclutch plate and its removable gripping jaw.
The casing 10 is fastened by screws 11 to a door 12, and within the said casing is mounted to slide a bolt 13 projecting through the lower end of the casing 10 to engage the floor 14 with a view to hold the door 12 in the desired position. The lower end 15 of the bolt 13 is preferably in the form of a piece of rubber to insure a firm hold on the floor. The bolt 13 is normally held in an uppermost position by a spring 16, and in order to lock the bolt in active position, that is, after the same has been forced downward in contact with the floor 14, use is made of a gripping plate 20 extending within the casing 10 and provided at its inner end with trunnions 21 engaging the under sides of lugs 22 integral on the 1 vsides of the casing 10. A spring 23 held in the casing 10 bears against the under side of the clutch plate 20. An aperture 24 is formed in the clutch plate 20 and through which extends loosely the reduced portion Specification of Letters latent. Patented Aug. 14:, 1917. I
25 of the bolt 13, and the clutch plate 20 is provided with a handle 26 extending out wardly'through an opening 27 formed in the front of the casing. The top of the clutch plate 20 is provided with an integral loop 28 through which passes a g i jaw 30 provided with an inner sharp segmental edge 31 adaptedto engage "thereduced portion 25 of the bolt 13 to hold the latter locked in whatever position it is moved into. The sharp edge 31 projects inward beyond the corresponding portion of the wall of the opening 24 so that the edge 31 firmly grips the reduced bolt portion 25 which extends loosely through the plate opening 24. The gripping jaw 30 is provided with a handle 32 overlying the handle 26 of the clutch plate 20, and a screw 33 serves to fasten the two handles 26 and 32 together. The screw 33 is located outside of the casing 10, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to permit of unscrewing the screw 33 with a view to permit of removing the gripping jaw 30 for sharpening the edge 31 thereof whenever the same has become dulled, or to permit of replacing a completely worn out gripping jaw 30 by a new one. It will be noticed that the gripping jaw 30 can be removed from the clutch plate 20 and replaced thereon without detaching the casing 10 from the door.
It isunderstood that the bolt is usually pushed downward with the foot to engage the lower end 15 thereof with the floor and thus hold the door in the desired position. I
When it is desired to release the door, the user bears down on the handle end of the clutch plate 10 to swing the same downward against the tension of the spring 23 and to disengage and release the bolt 13 to allow the spring 16 to slide the bolt upward out of engagement with the floor.
In the door check shown and described in the patent above referred to, it is necessary to remove the entire holder from the door and disassemble the parts with a view to permit of receiving the clutch plate for sharpening the wall of the opening 24, while with my improved device it is only necessary to remove the gripping jaw, sharpen the same and replace it Without disturbing any of the other parts of the door holder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a door holder, a casing adapted to be fastened to a door and provided at the front With an opening, a spring pressed bolt mounted to slide in the said casing and adapted to engage the floor to hold the door in full or partly open position, a clutch plate mounted to swing in the casing, and
having a handle extending through the said front opening, a detachable gripping jaw on the clutch plate and provided With a segmental sharp edge adapted to engage the said bolt, the said gripping jaw having a handle fitting the said clutch plate handle and extending through the said front opening to the outside of the casing, a screw fastening the handle of the jaw to the clutch plate, and a loop on the clutch plate Within the casing and through Which extends the said gripping j aW.
2. In a door holder, a clutch plate provided With an opening for the passage of a bolt, the clutch plate having a handle and an integral loop adjacent the opening, a gripping aw overlying the said plate and having a segmental sharp edge projecting over the Wall of the said plate opening, the said gripping jaw extending through the said loop and having a handle overlying the plate handle, and a screw fastening the said handles together.
