ELECTRIC IGNITION APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 20. 1916.

UNITED s'rAns Arena EDWARD S. HUFF, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HUFF LABORATORIES, INC., 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
ELECTRIC IGNITION APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 14, 31917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. HUFF a citizen of the United States, residing at etroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electric Ignition Apparatus, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or the same, such as will enable others sln'lled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to electric ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines and an object of my improvements is to provide an improved apparatus and one in which the material will not accumulate upon one of the contact points of the make-andbreak apparatus.
I secure this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of an electric apparatus embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the same.
a is a timer having the contact plates a and a and revolving contact arm 2'. This latter is geared to the engine so that the contacts at the plates of and a shall be made at the proper time. This connection is conventional and well understood and therefore is not indicated in the drawings. The arm 2' is grounded at g.
h is one group ofbattery cells and k is another and an equal group. The two groups 72. and k are connected in series as shown.
The contact plate a is connected by a conduct-or d to the positive pole of the group 72. and the plate a is connected by a conductor e to the negative pole of the group h. 7 is a third wire or conductor connected between the groups of cells it and 71.
In the conductor f is a make-and-break device which may be a vibrator b which is grounded at 9 c is a coil having the usual primary and secondary windings in the form shown in Fig. 1. The primary winding of the coil 0 acts as the actuator for the vibrator and is interposed in the conductor f. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 two coils c c are employed, their primary windings being respectively in the conductors d and e and there is a separate actuating coil j for the vibrator b interposed in the conductor s s are the secondary leads which are connected in the usual way to the contact plates of a distributor.
The operation of the above described device is as follows: i
The arm 1; being actuated by the engine in the usual way makes contacts successively with the plates a and a When contact is made with the plate a there is a circuit established in which the current flows from the positive pole of the battery h through the conductor a? to the plate a to the arm 2' then to the ground 9 thence to the ground and thence through the actuating coil of the vibrator. Thus causing a current to pass through a primary coil to cause the ignition spark in the usual Way.
When the arm 2' makes contact with the plate a the circuit is from the positive pole of battery group 71. through the conductor f to the ground 9 to the arm 2'; plate a and back to the negative pole of the battery it through the conductor 6. Thus it will be observed that successive contacts send the primary current through the make-andbreak device in opposite directions so that the material will not be carried over from one of the contact points to the other and accumulate.
What I claim is:
1. In an ignition system for internal com- ,bustionengines, the combination of a source of current, a timer, a make-and-break apparatus, two circuits each including a part of said source of current, timer and make-andbreak apparatus, said timer being adapted to complete said circuits successively, said circuits being arranged so that one shall send a current in an opposite direction to the other through said make-and-break apparatus.
2. In an ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines, the combination of a timer, a source of current having a positive and negative terminal, a make-and-break device connected to said source of current intermediate its terminals, a timer connected to said source of current through said makeand-break apparatus, said timer being adapted to complete a circuit through said make-and-break apparatus through oneterminal and then through the other terminal of said source of current.
3. In an ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines, the combination of a timer, a source of current having a positive and negative terminal, a make-and-break device connected to said source of current intermediate its terminals, a timer connected 10 to said source of current through said makemake-and-break apparatus through one terminal and then through the other terminal of said. source of current, and a coil in each 1 of said circuits.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
