1 '0 all whom it mm/ concern Be it known that. we, JAMES ROCK and GEORGE SINKOVI, citizens, respectively, of the United States and Austria, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Attachments, of whichthe following is a specification, such as, will enable those skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to telephone attachments for use in connection with what are known as pay telephones, and the object thereof is to provide an improved. attachment of this class which may beoperated upon the insertion of a predeterminedcoin and also by the insertion of a key without the use of a coin and by which the number of coins inserted are registered; a further object being to provide a telephone attachment of the class specified which is adapted to operate on or in connection with the receiver arm which arm forms a part of the operative mechanism of the attachment when the latter is in use.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:

In the drawing forming part of this specification, we have indicated an ordinary stand telephone having the usual standard a, the usual transmitter and the usual vertically movable receiver supporting arm a from which the receiver a is suspended.
In the construction of our improved attachment, as shown in the drawing, we provide a box or casing Z) having straps 5 by which it may be connected with the standard a of the telephone, and the left side of the box 6 is provided with a vertical extension Z9 having a front wall 5 a back wall 6 a left wall b and a right wall 6 and having a removable cap 6 and the left and right walls of the extension 72 are provided in the top thereof with vertical recesses b and 5 adapted to receive the receiver supporting arm a of the telephone when the attachment is secured thereto, and in this operation the cap 6 is first removed, after which the attachment is placed in position, and said cap is secured in place, and the recesses b and 5 are so formed and so positioned as to 1361' mit of the vertical movement of the arm a in the operation of the telephone.
Secured in the right wall 6 of the extension 6 of the box 5 is an inwardly directed stud c on the inner end of which are pivoted dogs 0 which extend upwardly to and above the arm a and are provided with inwardly directed noses c which operate in connection with said arm, and are adapted to en'- gage the top thereof, and the pivoted end portions of said dogs are inclosedby a yokeshaped support 0*, the. sides of which are provided with upwardly directed spring fingers c which bear on the backs of the dogs 0 and which normally serve to force said dogs into engagement with the arm w, or the top thereof, asindicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7, and as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and the yoke-shaped support 0 is secured to the right Wall Z) of the extension Z2 of the box 6 at 0 p The cross head portion, of the support 0 is provided with a central aperture 0 rearwardly of which the dogs 0 are provided with beveled recesses 0 and secured in the right wall b of the extension 6 of the box I) is a pin (Z, and mounted in connection with the left wall I) of said extension is a push button block (Z having an angular shank (Z which, passes through said left wall and is provided with a push button head (Z and the inner end of the block (Z is made conical in form, and passes through the aperture c in the yoke-shaped support 0 which forms a guide therefor, and operates in the beveled recesses c in the dogs 0 to sep arate the dogs, as hereinafter described, and the block (Z is provided with a longitudinal central bore to receive the pin (Z and in which is placed a spring 6Z5, on which said pin bears and which normally serves to force the push button block (Z outwardly.
Secured in the right wall 6 of the extension 6 of the box I) is a pin 6 on the inner end of which is pivoted a vertically arranged lever 6 the upper end portion 6 of which is provided with a nose 6* adapted to operate in a recess (Z in the conical end of the push button block (Z and the lower end of said lever is provided with a flat angular head 6 the front edge of which is provided with an angular flange 6 which extends below said head and is provided with a downwardly directed spring finger piece and secured in the front wall of the box I) is a headed pin or screw on which is mounted a spring f which bears on the head 6 of the lever 6 or the flange 6 thereof, and normally serves to force the head of said lever backwardly.
Formed in the left wall 5 of the box 5 and of the extension 6 thereof is a coin aperture b inwardly of which is a coin chute g which opens downwardly and to the left of the head 6 of the lever 6 and which is formed by a top member g and a bottom member 9 and the bottom member 9' is provided on its back edge with an inwardly directed flange g which extends downwardly below the head a of the lever e and the lower end of which is provided with a forwardly directed coin support 9 In the back wall 6 of the extension 6 of the box I) is mounted a stub shaft it having a dial head 72, provided with a scale of numerals in five and multiples thereof, and in the construction shown ranging from 5 to 55, and the back wall Z2 of the extension 5 is provided with an indicator k3 which operates in connection with said scale, and the dial head ]L2 is provided with a stop h which operates in connection with the indicator its, as hereinafter described.
On the inner end of the stub shaft h is mounted a ratchet wheel k and wound on said stub shaft is a spiral spring it, one end of which is secured to said ratchet wheel and the other to the corresponding wall of the extension 6 of the box I), and secured to the push button block (Z is an arm 7L7 which operates in connection with the ratchet wheel 7L and is adapted to turn said wheel one step at each operation of the push button block (F.
The box Z) is provided at the top and near the bottom thereof with two keepers 2' and i in which is mounted a rod 7', the upper end of which is provided with a reduced extension j which passes through the keeper 2' and on which is mounted a spiral spring j and mounted on the end of the extension 7' of the rod 7' above the spring j is a stop device is, the lower end of which is tubular in form to receive the extension j of the rod 7, and the upper end of which is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 7L5 and stop the movement thereof in the forward direction.
The stop device is provided at its lower end with a head 7; on which the spring bears and with aslot 7: and the part j of the rod j is provided with a pin j movable in said slot.
The bottom of the box Z2 is provided with a hinged door 6 adapted to open clownwardly and to the right and provided with a suitable lock mechanism or device m adapted to operate by a key inserted at m", and the lower end of the rod j is provided with an angular foot-piece which normally bears on the door 6 and the said door is provided with a finger or adapted to operate in connection with the foot piece of the rod j to move said rod downwardly when the door I) is opened, and to disengage the stop 70 from the ratchet wheel 71.
In the construction shown, the box or casing 6 is divided centrally and vertically, or along the line 6 into two parts, and the right hand part, in the construction shown, includes the right hand wall 6 of the extension of said box or casing and the separate parts of said box or casing are connected by bolts 2) at the top and bottom thereof, and the left and right walls of the extension Z2 of said box or casing are also connected at the top thereof by bolts 22.
The receiver supporting arm a of the telephone is provided with the usual spring a by which it is raised when the receiver a is detached therefrom, and the operation of the coin controlled parts of our improved attachment will be readily understood from the following description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In. operating this device to make a pay call, the receiver a is removed from the arm a after which a coin is passed through the aperture 79 and drops into the coin sup port formed by the part c"-e of the lever c and the parts g and g of the coin chute g, as indicated in dotted lines at 00 in Figs. 2 and 5, or the coin may be inserted before the receiver is removed from the arm. The above movement of the coin operates the part 6 of the lever e to disengage the nose a of the upwardly directed portion 6 thereof from the recess (Z in the push button block (Z The push button block is then operated by forcing the head (Z inwardly, which operation moves the upwardly directed end 6 of the lever e backwardly and the downwardly directed or head end of said lever forwardly to permit the coin supported therein to drop into the box or casing, and the said inward movement of the push button block also operates to separate the dogs 0 to disengage the noses 0 thereof reeasve from the receiver arm a to permit said arm to move upwardly from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 to theposition indicated in dotted lines in said figure, the receiver arm a being operated by the spring a in the usual manner.
It will be understood that after the receiver arm moves upwardly the push button block (Z is released and the same is returned to its normal position by the spring (Z and the lever 6 or the upwardly directed end 6 thereof is again moved into position to lock the push buttonblock against inward movement, and when the call has been completed the operation of placing the receiver a on the arm a will move the same downwardly in the usual manner and the springs 0 of the yoke-shaped support 0* willniove the dogs 0 into position to lock the arm a against upward movement.
As hereinbefore stated each inward movement of the push button block (Z rotates the dial head 1 2, a step to indicate the amount of money in the box or casing, and when it is desired to remove the coins from said casing the hinged door 6 is opened by a suitable key operating in connection with the lock mechanism on, and the operation of opening the door will operate to bring the dial head he back to its normal position as indicated in Fig. 4, this last operation being accomplished by the spring k mounted on the stub shaft .7L.
Our improved telephone attachment may also be operated by the insertion of a key instead of a coin and in the accomplishment of this result, we provide the cross head portion of the yoke-shaped support 0 with an upwardly directed extension 0 on which is mounted a rotatable block 0 which is oblong in vertical section, and which operates between the dogs 0 and the opposite sides of which are provided with oppositely directed fingers 0 which are in different transverse planes and which are provided with heads 0 and the front wall of the extension 72 of the box or casing 12 is provided with a key-hole 5 through which a key 29 may be inserted. The key p may be of any desired general form and the inner end thereof is provided with a recess 29 adapted to receive a pivot lug p on a support 79* secured to the top or cap 6 of the extension 72 of the box or casing, and the inner end portion of the key 7) is provided with radially arranged and spaced lug members 7 which operate in connection with the fingers 0 of the rotatable block 0 or the heads 0 of said fingers to separate the dogs 0 as hereinafter described, and the operation of this key controlled part of our improved attachment is as follows.
When it is desired to make a call, without using a coin, the receiver is detached from the arm a and the key p is inserted through the keyhole 6 into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 6, after which said key is turned or rotated in the direction of the arrow 00 to bring the innermost lug member 79 in engagement with the corresponding finger 0 of the block 0 to rotate said block from the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7 to the position shown in full lines in said figure to separate the dogs 0 and permit the receiver arm a to move from the position indicated in dotted lines to th'e position shown in full lines in said figure, and in the full line position of the parts the outer lug member operates in connection with the other finger 0 of the block 0 to aid in holding the same in the operative position, but this lug member does not operate to separate the dogs 0 The removal of the key will return the block '0 and the fingers 0 thereof into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 7, and the operation of placing the receiver a on the arm a will move said arm into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 7, and the springs of the yoke-shaped support 0 will move the dogs 0 into their dotted line positionto lock the arm a against upward movement.
It will be noted that when the dogs 0 are separated by the key 79 the dial head 72, is not rotated, and in this way the number of calls made by the insertion of a coin, or by others than those having a key similar to the key 79 may be positively determined.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the receiver arm a of the telephone forms a part of the operative mechanism of our improved telephone attachment and that said arm, the dogs 0 and their controlling springs 0 are common to both the coin operated and the key-operated mechanisms, and while we have shown and described the preferred form of the various parts of our improved telephone attachment as developed at the present time our invention is not limited to the details thereof, as herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a telephone attachment of the class described, a receiver arm lock mechanism, a coin registering mechanism, means whereby the coin registering mechanism may be operated on the insertion of a coin and said receiver arm may be released, and means for releasing said receiver arm by the insertion of a key without operating the coin registering mechanism.
2. In a telephone attachment of the class described, a receiver arm lock mechanism, a coin registering mechanism, means involving push button device Whereby said coin registering mechanism may be operated on the insertion of a coin and said receiver arm released, and means for releasing said receiver arm Without the insertion of a coin and Without operating the coin registering mechanism.
8. In a telephone attachment of the class described, a coin registering device, a receiver arm lock mechanism comprising tensionally controlled dogs arranged on opposite sides of said arm and normally adapted to hold the same against movement, and means for operating said dogs to release said arm on the insertion of a coin, said means being adapted to operate said coin registering device.

5. In a telephone attachment of the class described, a coin registering device, a reessence ceiver arm lock mechanism comprising tensionally controlled dogs arranged on opposite sides of said arm and normally adapted to hold the same against movement, a push button device for operating said dogs to release said arm on the insertion of a coin, said push button device being adapted to operate the coin registering device, and means for operating said dogs to release said arm by the insertion of a key Without operating the coin registering device.
6. A telephone attachment of the class described comprising a casing, a coin registering mechanism mounted therein, a receiver arm lock mechanism mounted in said casing and comprising tensionally controlled dogs arranged on opposite sides of said arm and normally adapted to hold the same against movement, means for operating said registering mechanism and separating said dogs to release said arm on the insertion of a coin, and means for separating said dogs to release said arm Without the insertion of a coin.
