To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAURICE L. WILLARD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in hand stamps and the object of the invention is to provide a self-inking stamp designed primarily for the printing of oranges, although it may be manifest that the stamp can be used for other purposes. In the preferred embodiment of my invention, I employ a supporting block to which is secured a self-inking hand stamp on the upper end of which is arranged a plate fitted to receive the orange or other object to be printed, the construction being such that when an operator grasps an orange and places it on the plate he may thereby press the plate downward so that the hand stamp is operated to stamp the orange as desired.

The preferable embodiment of my invention is shown in the drawings accompanying and forming part hereof and will now be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the aforesaid drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stamp made in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.

Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of the machine in its normal position.

Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 3 but in the position in which the stamping is done.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals: 1 designates a support which may be of any desired construction but which, as shown in the drawings, is a rectangular device having an opening 2 therein for the reception of a supporting block 3 for carrying the self-inking stamp. The supporting block 3 is adapted to closely fit the rectangular opening 2 in the support 1 and is not secured therein but is loosely inserted in said opening so that it may be readily removed whenever necessary. Secured to the supporting block 3 is a selfinking hand stamp comprising a yoke 4: which is designed to rest in a recess 5 formed in the upper face of the supporting bl ck 3- h oke i contest d to a tube 6 which enters a cylindrical opening 7 in the supporting block 3, said tube receiving a stem 8 of the hand stamp which is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means of a spring 9. The stem 8 is connected to the frame 10 of the hand stamp, this frame having side arms 12 and 13. The frame 10 supports the usual inking pad 14: and between the side arms 12 and 13 is a die plate 15 of the tumbler variety. The die plate has flanged side arms 16 and 17, within the flanges of which are located rollers 18 and 19 supported by slotted c/am arms 20 and 21. these cam arms being pivotally supported at 22 and 23 on the side arms 12 and 13. A rod or pivotal pin 24 passes through the slots in the side arms 12 and 13 and through openings in the upper ends of the yoke 4.- and alsothrough openings in the flanged arms 16 and 17 of the die plate 15. By preference the rod or pivotal pin 24 is extended on both sides of the stamp and fits within slots 26 and 27 formed in opposite sides of the support 1. It is to be noted, however, that the stamp is not supported by the walls forming the slots 26 and 27 but said slots and the rod or pin 24: merely hold the stamp in proper alinement. Secured to the upper ends of the side arms 12 and 13 is a plate 28 preferably of the curved shape shown in the drawings which may be provided with a cushion 30 of sponge or other suitable rubber, said plate 28 and said cush ion 30 each having a-slot 31 therethrough for the purpose of permitting the printing characters 32 on the die plate 15 to pass through them and print the orange or other similar object pressed upon said plate. The plate 28 has lugs 29 by which said plate may be secured to the side arms 12 and 13 of the hand stamp frame. In order to permit the proper working of the parts, the walls of the support 1 are formed with recesses 33 which will permit the flanged side arms 16 and 17 of the die plate 15 to pass without interference.

In operation: An orange or similar object is held by the hand and placed upon the cushion 30 and its plate 28 and the operator presses the orange downward, thereby forcing the plate 28 and cushion 3O downward and with them the side arms 12 and 13 of the hand stamp. This action causes the die plate 15 to tumble in a manner well known I the result that as the cushion 30 and the plate reach their downward position the printing characters of the'die plate are projected upward through the slot 31 to make an impression upon the orange or similar object being pressed against said printing characters. As soon as the impression is made and the operators pressure on the orange is relieved the spring 9 causes the parts to resume the normal positions shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

From the foregoing and accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have produced a very simple and convenient device for printing oranges and similar objects and one which necessitates no movement whatever except to hold the object being printed and press it downward upon the cushion 30 and its plate 28.

It will be obvious that changes and modifications may be made in the form and construction of my invention without depart ing from the spirit thereof and reference should therefore be made to the appended claims to determine the scope of the invention.

/Vhat I claim as my invention is:

1. In a device of the character described, a self-inking hand stamp having a suitable framework, an inking device and a die plate, and a plate secured to said framework having a slot through which the die plate is projected in the act of printing, said plate being concaved to-receive an orange or similar object.

In a device of the character described, a self-inking hand stamp having a suitable framework, an inking device and a die plate, a plate secured to said framework having a slot through which the die plate is projected in the act of printing, said plate being concaved to receive an orangeor similar object, and a cushion of sponge rubber located in said concaved plate.

3. In a device of the character described, a self-inking hand stamp having a framework with side arms projecting therefrom, an inking device, a die plate, and a plate secured to the free ends of said side arms and having a surface substantially the shape of the orange or other object being printed, said plate having a slot therein through which the die plate projects in the act of printing.

4. In a device of the character described, a suitable support, a self-inking hand stamp projecting upwardly from said support, and a plate secured to the upper end of said hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on said plate and said plate pressed downward to permit the printing characters to project through said plate and perform the act of printing.

5. In a device of the character described, a suitable support, a self-inking hand stamp projecting upwardly from said support, and a plate secured to the upper end of said hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on, said plate and said plate pressed downward to perform the act ofprinting, said plate having a slot therein through which the die plate may project and also having its upper surface formed substantially the shape of the orange or other object being printed.

In a device of the, character described, a. suitable support, a self-inking hand stamp projecting upwardly from said support, a plate secured to the upper end, of. said hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on said plate and said plate pressed downward to perform the act of printing, said plate having a slot therein through which the die plate may project and also. having its upper surface formed substantially the shape of the orange or other object being printed, and, a, sponge rubber cushion secured in said plate.

7. In a device of the character described, a support having an opening therein, a sup porting block adapted to project into said opening, a self-inking hand stamp projecting upwardly from said supporting block, and a plate secured to the upper end of said hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on said plateand said plate pressed downward to perform the act of printing.

8. In a device of the character described, a support having an opening therein, a supporting block adapted to project into said opening, a self-inking hand stamp projecting upwardly from said supporting block, and a plate secured to the upper end ofsaid hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on said plate and said plate pressed downward to perform the act of printing, said plate having a surface substantially the shape of the object being printed.

9. In a device of the character described, a support having an opening therein, a supporting block adapted to project into said opening, a. self-inking hand stamp, projecting upwardly from said supporting block, and a plate secured to the upper end of said hand stamp whereby an orange or similar object may be placed on said plate and pressed downward to perform the act of printing, said hand stamp having a rod or pin and said support having slots receiving said rod or pin whereby the hand stamp is held in proper alinement.

10.
