GAS JOINT OR SEAL FOR CLOSET-BOWLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Augb *7, 191W.
Application filed August 21, 1916. Serial No. 115,990.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gas Joint or Seal for Closet-Bowls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to seals or joints for closet bowls and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which will prevent leakage of sewer gas and which is automatically maintained in a proper operating or workable condition.
Another object in view is to provide a seal at the bottom of the bowl arranged as a trap and acting in connection with a specially constructed bowl for supplying the trap with fluid.
A still further object in view is the production of an improved bowl having a vent or passageway and projections coacting with a pocket or cup structure of the waste pipe whereby a gas trap or seal is produced which is automatically supplied with water each time the bowl is flushed.
In the accompanying drawing:
The figure is a side view partly in section of a bowl and trap disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, l indicates the body of the bowl which may be of any usual or preferred structure, which is provided with a passageway 2 leading to the waste pipe 3. In forming the body 1 a passageway 16 is provided which follows the outline of the outer face of the bowl, preferably, and eX- tends from slightly below the overflow or dam 18. Passageway 16 discharges into the pocket 7 inside of the flange 9 and allows for a free circulation of air through the passageway from either end so that the same will not become air bound and prevent the free flow of water to the sealed pocket.
By this construction and arrangement, whenever the closet is flushed some of the water will pass through the passageway 16 and into the pocket 7. The pocket 7 is formed by an annular cup 8 which is bolted or otherwise secured to the bowl l and a1'- ranged to have the annular depending flange 9 project therein, said flange being formed integrally with the bowl l as well as the guiding flange l0. The cup 8 may be made separate or independent of the waste pipe 3 and then soldered thereto, but usually and preferably the waste pipe 3 is made integral with the cup 8, as shown in the drawing.
IVhat I claim is:
l. A water closet bowl comprising a bowl body having the usual trap, a passageway leading therefrom, means defining a second passageway leading from the top of the trap to the bottom of the bowl, and a seal or trap arranged at the bottom of said bowl for receiving water from said second passageway.
2. A bowl of the character described, comprising a body having a waste passage, a liquid gas seal surrounding the outlet of said passage, and means defining a passageway from the upper edge of the water seal of the bowl to said seal around said outlet whereby each time the bowl is flushed water may pass to said seal.
8. A water closet bowl comprising a body having a waste passage formed with a trap and a pair of spaced annular depending flanges surrounding the outlet of said waste passage, a liquid gas seal surrounding said outlet, said seal having a pair of upstanding walls telescoping over part of the outer of said flanges, and means defining a passageway from the upper edge of said trap to the interior of said outer fiange whereby water will be supplied to said gas seal each time the bowl is iiushed.
4L. A closet bowl of the character described, comprising a body having a waste passage and a depending annular flange surrounding the waste passage but spaced therefrom, a liquid gas seal telescoping over said flange, the outer wall of the seal eX- tending to nearer the base of the flange than the inner wall, and means defining a water passageway extending from the water line of the trap in the first mentioned passageway to a point immediately within said flange whereby whenever said trap is flushed water will pass through said last mentioned passageway into the trap for maintaining the trap filled, said inner wall permitting an overflow from the trap.
