Description

1 result of a deposit of scale.
G'LLIE '1. NELSON, 0F TACOMA, WASHIHGTGN'.
torture.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Omar. T. Nnnsoiv, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilersof which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My 'invention relates to boilers and has for its principal object to improve upon the construction of my boiler as outlined in my previous Patent #1196140 and my pending application #4d763, filed August 10th, 1915, in that the baflle plate referred to in my previous patent is made with an incline to ward the center of the boiler for the purpose of allowing thesediment which is deposited from the w ter in the boiler to be washed from the ballle plate. In my previous construction with the bafie plate sediment was found to accumulate on the plate with the At the present time I am manufacturing boilers with the plate inclined as shown in this application and in this way have obviated the objections to my previous constructions. Another object of this application is to provide an improved down draft fire box or steel, boiler setting which embodies 'vvater cooled grates of hovel construction.
Other objects will -is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed ou in the appended claims.
In the drawlngs Figure l is a side elevation of my boiler shown in position upon my improved setting with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the water cooled grate of Fig. 1. Fig. is an enlarged cross sectional view of one of the water cooled grate bars.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, numeral 1 indicates a re tube boiler having an offset portion at its rear end. The offset portion is semi-circular and is cut diametrically across the lower half of the boiler. The portion of the boiler between the offset semi-circular end and semi-circular portion which is not ofisetis closed by an inclined bafile plate 2 which is integral with the rear head of he boiler. Tubes?) are connected in the rear end of the boiler as in my previous patent. l prerer "to incline the plate 52 in order that any sediment which is deposited from the water in. the boiler will Qpecificatiou of batters Yateutj appear as my inventionv Patented Aug. be gradually worked down along the inclined plates and dropped adjacent to a. blow-oil pipe l. Ihave found that the circulation of thewater in the boiler is sufficient to Wash the sediments from. an inclined plate, whereas it will deposit on the horizontal plane with the result that the plates have a tendency to burn out quickly, due to improper cooling. My improved boiler setting and fire box embodies the down draft feature which has an upper grate and a lower grate. The boiler setting 5 consists ,of metal plates in special relationship to each other and between whieh the water in the boiler freely circulates. The setting is provided with the usual grates 6 and with my improved water cooled upper grate bars 7 upon which the fuel is first deposited, and through which it drops down upon the lower grate 6 during the process 'of burning. The grate bars 7 are tubular and are closed at their outer end 8 while at the other end they are screwed into flanges upon the boiler setting 5. A circulating plate 9 divides each bar 7 along its horizontal diameter but does not reach as far forward as the closed end. The circulating plate 9 projects somewhat into the setting 5 and is bent down as at 10 in order to cause the rising water in the setting to flow into the grate bur beneath the plate and after it is further heated by the fire beneath the grate bar it will circulate around the outer end of plate 9 and hacking into the transversely the setting and ad1acent thebottom of the boiler and at a point just back; of the upper grate bar 7. My boiler fire box, it will be understood, is of the down draft type and has proven very successful in. actual tests.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described. scribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
l. in combination, a horizontal boiler having its rear upper portion extended beyond Having dethe lower rear portion necting the upper and lower portions being forwardly inclined, tubes extending the full length of the boiler above the plate, asecond set of tubes extending from the lower shorter portion of the rear of the boiler to the front end of said boiler, a drain tube at the bottom'of the rear end of the short portion of the boiler, whereby sediments will slide down the inclined bottom'plate to the open end of the drain tube to be carried oil", and a boiler setting on which the'front end of the boiler is supported and the rear up- 2. In combination, hollow grate bars at setting, a hollow above the hollow a hollow boiler setting, the forward end" of the bafiie plate in rear of and grate, a lower grate below the hollow grate bars, a bridge wall at the rear of the lower grate, a boiler supported by the hollow boiler setting, the rear up per ortion of the boiler being extended beyond the rearlower portion and connected y a'forwardly inclined plate, tubes extending from the rear upper end to the front of the boiler, tubes extending from the'rear lower portion to the front of the boiler, a drain tube communicating with the bottom of the boiler adjacent the rear lower end and extendini through the setting, whereby sediment will fall the bottom plate con- 7 a boiler supported by per extended end of said boiler is connected.
from the inclined plate to the open endtof the drain tube, the displaced upper and lower portions'of the boiler and the forwardly inclined plate forming a pocket for the products of comthe rear end of bustion, the inclined plate acting as ade-l a bridge wall at-the rear of the lower grate,
upper portion of the boiler bein beyond the rear lower portion an by a forwardly ing from the rear upper end of the front of the boiler, tubes extending from the rear lower portion to the frontiof the boiler, a drain tube communicating with the-bottom extended the setting, the rear; 45. connected lnclined plate, tubes extendofthe boiler adjacent the'rear lower end and extending through the setting, whereby sedi-' ment will fall from theinclined plate to the open end of the drain tube, thedisplaced upper portion of the rear end of the boiler; and the forwardly inclined plate forming a pocket for the products of combustion, the inclined late acting as a deflector to direct. said'pro nets of combustion downwardly to the lower set of tubes. v
