Be it known that I, ANDREW NILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Flue-Ilxpanders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact descripti-on, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to flue expanders and has for its object the pr-ovision of an improved expander which can be used in places normally inaccessible to flue expanders hitherto employed.
I will explain one form which my invention may take more in detail by referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the same, in which- Figure 1 is a view to indicate the general nature of the use to which my flue expander may be put;

Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, I show two outside brick walls of a furnace 1 and 2 respectively within which two water legs are placed consisting respectively of the walls 3 and 4 and the walls 5 and 6. A connecting pipe 7 is mounted between the two water legs and is joined to the walls 4 and 5. A second pipe 8 runs outwardly through the wall 2 and is joined to the wall 6. There are thus required to be formed three expanded joints, respectively the joints 9, 10 and 11.
I will explain first of all my improved expander and show its application to the form- Y ing of these various joints. My improved expander consists of a cylindrical shell 12 having at its left hand extremity (Fig. 5) a portion of somewhat greater thickness and provided with recesses 13, 13, within which the pin' ends 14, 14 integrally united to rollers 15 may move to and fro. The rollers, as will be readily apparent, are permitted a movement in accordance with the lost motion of the pins 14 within the slots 13. The rollers are tapered with a taper correspond ing to that provided upon the expanding linger 16 so that the outer surfaces of these rollers, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5 are always parallel to the axis of the device. The expanding finger 16 is carried upon a steln 17 which projects through the shell 12. The stem 17 has a universal oint connection with a handle or operating rod 18, there being lost motion between the tongue 19 and the fingers 20, 20, and there being also a pivotal movement due to the two parts 17 and` 18 being loosely pinned together by the pin 21 as shown more clearly in Fig. 9. The shell 12 is provided with a rearwardly extending screw threaded nipple 22 for purposes that will presently appear. The rollers 15 are held in place by means of collars 23 and 24 pinned into position after they had been mounted by pins such as the pin 25..
It will be seen from this that the rollers are thus movably held in their allotted recesses, being permitted an in and out movement and of course also a rotating movement. The forward extremity of the shell 12 has a tubular extension 26 which at certain times is provided with a nipple 27, which nipple is adjustable inwardly and outwardly as will readily appear. At certain times the nipple 22 is provided with an extending hollow cylindrical sleeve 28 for purposes that will presently appear.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 2, my improved expander is shown as mounted in position to make the joint 9. It will be seen that the pipe 7 is in position to be united with the wall 4 and the expander must be inserted through the pipe 7 to make this union. In order to have the rollers at the proper position so that they will expand the tube 7 to form the union, the nipple or gage 27 is adjusted so that the distance from the left hand extremity of this nipple to the center of the rollers 15 is exactly equivalent to the distance from the right hand extremity of the wall 8 to the center of the wall 4:. The expander is then inserted into position and the movable part of the device consisting of the elements 16, 17 and 18 is hammered inwardly a slight distance, whereupon this structure is rotated to roll the rollers over the inner surface of the tube 7. This of course is repeated as customary until the joint is completed, the movable structure consisting of the elements 16, 17 and 18 being recurringly hammered inwardly periodically to move the rollers outwardly.
It will be seen that the sleeve structure 12 carrying the rollers is properly held in position by reason of the proper adjustment of the nipple 27. After the completion of the joint 9 it is necessary to complete the joint 10 at the opposite extremity of thetube 7.
The expander again must be used in a more or less inaccessible place due to the fact that it has to be inserted through the wall 6 in order to reach the joint 10. In order to make the proper adjustment for this the sleeve 12 is provided with a collar or gage 29, which collar is adjusted so that the center of the rollers coincides with the center of the wall 5. The expanding operations are then carried on as before.
Now in order to adapt the expander to make the joint 11 between the tube 8 and the wall 6, the sleeve 12 is provided with an extension which consists of the shell 28 which is screw threadedly attached to the nipple 22. The extension 28 thus projects outwardly beyond the tube 8. The collar 29 is then mounted upon this extension 28 so the center line of the rollers coincides with the center line of the wall 6. The expanding operations can then be carried on as before. A split collar 29@L clamped to the tube by the bolt 80 is provided with pins 81 so as to hold the tube in position.
From this it will be seen that I have provided an expander which can be used in many places for forming joints, the three particular uses herein illustrated showing how flexible is its operation.
The universal joint between the parts 17 and 18 prevents the operator from disalining the rollers, during rotation and otherwise.
From what has been described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art. Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A flue expander comprising asupport, a plurality of rollers mounted therein, a cooperating finger for said rollers, a handle associated with said finger, and an adjustable stop at the forward extremity of said support for adjusting its position for operative purposes, said stop constituting the apex of said expander and being adapted to enter the flue and abut an abutment to thereby maintain the said expander in any desired position.
