To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN A. LoN- DELIUS, J11, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water and Sand Heaters, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to combined hot water and sand heaters, and its primary object is to provide a simple, substantial and practical heater, which may be used in the open, and particularly in cold weather, for heating water and sand. It is well known that during the cold weather, water must be heated for mixing concrete or other sand and cement mixtures, and that sand in cold weather becomes frozen into lumps, so that the sand cannot be used until it has been thawed out. Ordinarily a long iron pipe is used for heating the sand, a fire being, built therein, and sand being thrown upon the pipe. This is not entirely satisfactory because the water must be heated by some other means. In the present invention, the same device is employed to heat and dry the sand as is employed to heat the water. The invention consists, therefore, in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the drawing, accompanying this specification, in which Figure 1, is a central longitudinal section through a combined heater, embodying a simple form of the present invention; Fig. 2, is a vertical cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a plan of the heating coils, partly broken away; and Fig. 4, is a detail section taken on the line 1-t of Fig. 3.
Referring to said drawing, 5, designates an arched sheet metal casing or shell; its lower edges are bent outward, as at 6, to provide flanges or feet, which are adapted to rest upon the ground. For the purpose of strengthening and reinforcing said sheet metal casing or shell, I provide a number of reinforcing members, here shown in the form of angle iron bars 7, which are shaped to conform to the contour or cross section of the casing 5. There should be a sufiicient number of reinforcing members 7, to assist the casing in supporting the load of sand which is dumped upon it. Said angle iron Specification of Letters Patent.

reinforcing members are perfectly riveted to the casing, and extend transversely along the inside thereof from one lower edge to the other. One end of the structure may be permanently closed by an end piece 8, riveted to the end angle iron 7, and a smoke stack or flue 9, may be provided at said closed end of the structure. The other end may be temporarily closed by a cover or door, 10, hinged at its lower end to the struc ture, and arranged to be held in place by a hook or the like 11. An open "space is left between the lower edge of the cover 10, and the ground for the admission of air to the combustion chamber of the device.
Secured to said angle irons 7, are transversely extending angle iron bars 12, that support the grate bars, and said angle iron bars 12, are arranged in an inclined plane (clearly seen in Fig. 2), the purpose of which will be set forth later on. Resting upon said angle iron bars 12, is a flat coil of pipe 13, the coils of which preferably run lengthwise of the structure, and terminate in ends, one of which is provided with a shutoff valve 14, and the other end of which is arranged for connection with a flexible tube, 15; a flexible tube 16, is removably secured to the shutoff valve 14. Preferably, the shutoff valve 14, has a drain vent, which (in accordance with the common and well known practice in valves or shutoff cocks) remains closed while the valve is open, and opens whenever the valve is closed, thereby permitting water remaining in the pipe, to drain out. The coil of pipe 13, acts as the grate bars for the heater, and is held in place by transversely extending angle iron bars 17, the vertical flanges of which are notched to receive the coils of pipe, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. Bolts 19, connect the horizontal flanges of the angle iron bars, and are provided with nuts upon their ends, whereby the parts may be clamped together. In this way, a light, substantial and practical heater is provided, which may employ wood as a fuel for heating the water contained in the pipes, and for heating the sand dumped upon the casing.
In use, fuel is placed upon the coil of pipe, the fuel ignited, and the shutoff valve 1 1, opened to permit water to run through the coil of pipe. The lower end of the front of the heater being open, air enters the device at this end, passes underneath the grate bars, up through the combustion chamber and then out through the smoke stack or fiue 9. The casing or shell 5, becomes heated, and water passing through the coil of pipes becomes heated sufficiently for use in preparing cement, concrete, mortar, and the like. At the same time sand may be dumped upon the hot shell or casing, and the lumps thawed out, whereby it is quickly put into condition for use.
When it is desired to discontinue the use of the heater, the main Water supply is shut ofi", and the shutoff valve 14-, is opened, whereby the water contained in the coil of pipe is permitted to drain out through the a vent in the valve lt, at the lower end of the coil, thus avoiding any danger of the Water freezing in the pipes, when exposed to the cold atmosphere and not in use.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined water and sand heater, comprising an arched sand heating shell, open at one end and closed at the other, there being a smoke stack at the said closed end, a plurality of transverse, reinforcing members secured upon the inner face of said shell, a plurality of transversely extending bars, and a coil of pipe supported by said bars, said coil of pipe serving as the grate bars for fuel contained in said shell, and having connections for flexible inlet and discharge pipes.
2. A combined water and sand heater, comprising a semi-circular sand heating shell, open at the bottom and closed at one end, there being a smoke stack at said closed end, a plurality of transverse angle iron reinforcing bars secured upon the inner side of said shell, a plurality of transverse bars, secured to said angle iron reinforcing bars, said transverse bars being inclined from one side of the structure to the other, a coil of pipe resting upon said tran verse bars and forming the grate bars of the heater, notched angle iron bars overlying the pipes of said coil, and bolts connecting said notched bars and coil supporting bars, said coil of pipe being arranged for connection with flexible inlet and discharge pipes.
