MACHINE FOR NOTCHING PAPER STRIPS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1917.
Application filed October 18, 1916. Serial No. 126,323.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, EMIL JAGENBERG, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Notching Paper Strips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine of novel construction, for notching paper strips, so that such strips may be narrowed in part, for the purpose of forming tubular sleeves with receding necks. The machine is so constituted, that pieces of suitable length and width may be removed from the strip without requiring any change in the cutting tools.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a machine embodying my invention, with parts omitted;
Fig. 2, a planthereof, and
Fig. 3, a side elevation of the machine.
A pair of circular shearing blades 8 are mounted on upper and lower spindles a rotatable in bearings b that extend upwardly from a base 22 which is provided with a toothed rim 2. This rim is engaged by a rack 2 connected to a rod e having a turn buckle c, and furnished with a pin that engages an elongated eye Z of a forked cam lever 71,, said lever being intermittently actuated by a cam is mounted on the main shaft 2'.
Base 6 turns on a pin 0, part 9 of the machine frame. spindle a is driven by a pulley p and transmits motion to the lower spindle by gear wheels 0". Upper blade 8 is slidable on its spindle and is yieldingly held against the lower blade by means of a spring g.
The web of paper A is carried over a table t which is notched at d opposite the path of blades 8, an adjustable gage u engaging a fixed mounted on the table serving to guide the web during its travel. Web A is intermittently advanced by a feed roller 0 and a spring-influenced idler 'w, roller 4) being driven by a mutilated gear wheel w mounted The upper.
on shaft 2' and engaging a pinion g fast on shaft of roller v. In operation, the web A is intermittently drawn over the table, and the spindles a which are inclined to the path of the web, are. given such a swing inward, that they will move into the required position, at right angles thereto. In this position, they are held for a short time, whereupon they are swung outward so as to become again inclined to the path of the web. In this way, there will be made in the web, first 'a curved cut, then a straight out and then again a curved out, to sever a clipping with straight edges and arched ends from the web, and thus notch the latter in the manner desired.
The spindles a may either be oscillated I backward after the notch has been formed, or they may be intermittently rotated, so as to resume in either case, their initial position. The location of the notch can be readily altered by changing the relative posi tion between wheel w and cam is. This adjustmentcan be elfected by means of a set screw carried by wheel 00 and engaging a slot Z0 formed in the cam.
If the width of the cut isto be changed, the gage this set nearer to or farther away from the shearing blades, as will be readily understood.
I claim:
1. A machine for notching paper strips comprising a table, means for lntermittently advancing a strip of paper over the table,
a swinging bearing, an upper and a lower spindle ournaled therein, and shearing members carried by the spindles and adapted to engage the strip.
2. A machine for notching paper strips I comprising a table, means for intermittently advancing a paper strip over the table, a swinging bearing, meansfor intermittently turning the bearing, an upper and a lower spindle carried by the bearing, and shearing members carried by the spindles and adapted to engage the paper strip. 4
3. A machine for notching paper strips comprising a notched table, means for in- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set termittently advanclng a paper strip over my signature in the presence of tWo sub- 10 the table, a swinging bearlng having a serlblng Witnesses.
toothed rim, an intermittentl actuated rack 5 engaging said rim, an uppdi and a lower EMIL JAGENBERG? spindle journaled in the bearing, and shear- Witnesses: ing members carried by the spindles and HELEN NUFER, adapted to engage the paper strip. FRANCES NUFER.
