JOHN J. DOSSERT AND GEORGE L. STEWART, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO GROUSE-HINDS COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PORCH-LIGHT.
Patented Aug. 7,1917.
Application filed May '16, 1913. Serial No. 768,044.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. DOSSERT and GEoRoE L. STEWART, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Porch-Light, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the -pro-. duction of a porch light which in addition to lighting the porch also illuminates a sign or the street number of the building; and the invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.-
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section of this porch light.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33, Fig. 1.
This porch light comprises, generally, a box or casing for the lamp, the box having means for connection with an electric conduit, and windows on two sides thereof which are penetrable by light.
As here shown the box is substantially rectangular in form and the front and under sides thereof are provided with transparent windows, the front wall being designed to contain the street number of the house or other building, and the wall of the lower side being designed to permit the rays of light to illuminate the steps and entrance of the residence, and in order to illuminate the steps most advantageously, the under side is inclined upwardly and rearwardly as by a suitable bracket 5 projecting inwardly from the rear wall 6 of the box. The nlpplev .2 is here shown as connected to the conduit 3 by means of a coupling 7 having a plug portion inserted in the nipple 2 and formed with an annular groove 8' in which the tapered fastening member 9 is tangentially passed, the fastening member 9 being here shown as a screw threading transversely through the nipple 2 and having a conical portion designed to bind in the groove 8 and hold the coupling in any angular position.
10 and 11 are respectively the window openings in the front and under sides of the box, and 12 and 13 are panels secured in the openings, the panels being preferably glass. As here shown the box is formed with a groove 14 extending around three sides of each opening 10 or 11 and open at the fourth side of each opening for permitting the insertion of the panel of glass, the box being also formed with a face. as 15 or 16 located at the fourth side of the opening 10 or 11,-
and flush with the rear side 17 of the groove 14 and against which face 15 or 16 one mar gin of the panel of glass rests when the remaining margins are in the groove 14 or 15.
Fastening means engage the exposed edge of each panel 12 or 13 and, as here shown, the panel 13 arranged in the opening on the inclined side of the box, is held in position by fastening members as buttons 18, and the panel 12 on the front side of the box is held in position by an angular member 19 having a flange for engaging the front face of the lower margin of the panel 12, the member 19 also engaging the exposed edge of said panel, both fastening members being secured to the box by any suitable means as screws 20 and 21, and the member 19 having open ended slots 22 for receiving the screws, the slots permitting removal of the member 19 when'the screws are loosened.
In use, the box may be secured to a porch or building in any suitable manner with the face in which the street number is set presented forwardly and the inclined face downwardly so that the number can be read from the street and the steps of the porch and the entrance illuminated.
What we claim is:
An illuminating device comprising an elongated box oblong in general form in longitudinal section, the box having substantially flat sides and means at one end for connection to a conduit and also having at said'end a support for a lamp socket, the support being located on the inner side of the wall at said end, the lower side of the box being located on an incline relativelyto the front side and the rear side of the box, Onondaga, in the State of New York, this and said lower side and front side having '21st day of April 1913.
transparent panels, substantially as and for J OHN J. DOSSERT.
