JOHN F. GOODWIN, OF SARNIA, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR T0 HAROLD R. GOODWIN, OF SARNIA, CANADA.
GAS WATER-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24L, 191?.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. Gooowrn, of the city of Sarnia, in the county of Lambton, Province of Ontario, Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Water-Heaters, is a specification.
This invention relates to water heaters of the type in which a gas burner is supported at the bottom of a casing containin water sections through which a flow of water passes and is heated in passing, and my object is to devise a heater of this type which will be rapid in operation, economical, and which will not be liable to fill up with scale 01' deposits of sediment.
I attain my object by forming the water sections alternately as rings and disks, the rings fitting closely to the casing and the disks being spaced therefrom so that a baffled passageway is formed for the hot products of combustion. The water sections each contain an annular waterway, and the connections are such that the water flows in a continuous stream through each waterway from end to end and through all the sections seriatz'm.
The invention is hereinafter more specifically described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the heater with the door open;
Fig. 2 a cross section of the casing above the burner supports;
Fig. 3 a plan view partly in section of one of the annular water sections;
Fig. 4 a similar view of one of the disk shaped water sections; and
Fig. 5 a detail showing how the water sections are supported in the casing.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is the casing which is provided with the door 2 of substantially half the circumference of the casing. The bottom of the casing is open and the top is provided with the cover 3, through which is formed the opening for the vent pipe, which opening is surrounded by the collar 4.. An opening for the passage of the outlet pipe 5 is also pro vided in the cover.
of which the following The fixed half of the casing near the bottom is provided with a plurality of sets of ribs 6, which are adapted to support the burner 7.- This enables the burner to be set at the proper distance from the water sections to suit any pressure of gas. The heater is therefore fitted for use with either natural or artificial gas.
The mixer and valve for the burner form no part of the present invention and will not be specifically described.
In this heater I employ alternately the annular water sections 8 and the disk shaped water sections 9. The section just about the burner is preferably an annular section, and it, as well as the other annular sections, all closely fit the sides of the casing. The disk shaped sections 9 alternate with the annular sections. Each of the sections both annular and disk shaped, contains an annular Waterway 10 divided by means of a cross partition 11. The inlet connection 12 to the lower water section is at one side of the partition 11. The connection 13 with the disk shaped water section above is at the other side of this partition 11. It will be noted that the connections 13 are alternated throughout the heater, so that the Water entering at 12 flows in a continuous stream through each waterway from end to end and through all the sections serz'atim to the outlet 5.
None of the water first receiving heat from the burner can pass directly to the outlet, but must pass over the whole of the heating surface of the heater. I thus insure that the water delivered at the outlet is of high temperature so that the device may be used as an instantaneous heater if necessary.
Owing to the arrangement of the disk shaped sections and the annular sections, the hot products of combustion must follow an undulating path, contacting thoroughly with all of the heating surface. There is thus no possibility of products of combustion passing directly from the burner to the flue without giving up a proper proportion of its heat to the water passing through the water sections.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I have devised a heater which will satis factorily attain the objects of my invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a Water heater the combination of a casing; a'gas burner at the lower end of the casing; a plurality of annular Water sections closely fitting the casing; a plurality of disk shaped Water sections alternating with the annular Water sections and spaced from the casing whereby all the products of combustion flow through the annular sections and around the disk shaped sections, thus assing over all the heating surface, each of the annular and disk shaped water sections Gopies of this patent may be being provided With an annular Waterway and a cross partition dividing the Waterway; and Water connections alternately located at opposite sides of said partitions so that the water flows through each Waterway from end to end and through all the Water sections seriatz'm.
Signed at Sarnia this fourth day of May A. D. 1915, in the presence of the two undersigned Witnesses.
