To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AIMFZ A. ST. LAuRnNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, county of Essex, and State ofMassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shuttle-Checks for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, 1s a specificatlon, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to shuttle checks for looms.
One object of the invention is to provide a device which will effectively check the movement of the shuttle, but will promptly release the shuttle and permit free throw thereof when struck by the picker stick.
Another object is to provide a device which may be readily attached to the lay of the loom without interfering with the feeler mechanism or the discharge of the empty bobbins.
Another object is to provide a device which will not interfere with the proper swing of the picker stick in the plane of the shuttle path, and thus the stick will always strike the shuttle squarely and throwing of the shuttle from the lay by the picker stick will be prevented. 7
Another object is to provide a device which may be quickly and easily adjusted to vary the checking efi'ect thereof on the shuttle.
And still another object is to provide a strong and simple device which will practically eliminate the necessity for using leather in its construction.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of one good form of the invention shownin the accompanying drawing of a perspective view of a portion of the lay of a loom equipped with a shuttle check embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the usual lay beam on which is the raceway for the shuttle 3. At eachend of the lay. is the usual shuttle box 4, and a picker stick 5 for throwing the shuttle across'the'lav.
The usual binder 7 may be pivoted on the pin 9 on the lay and has an inward swell for engagement with a side of the shuttle.
The shuttle check shown herein as embodying the invention comprises a bracket ll shown herein as secured to the front of the lay by bolts '13 entered through elongated slots 15 in said bracket. These slots permit adjustment of the bracket along the lay for a purpose to be described.
Spring means is provided which, in the present instance of-the invention, is in the form of a helical spring 17 adapted to be moved bodily toward the binder to press the latter against the shuttle to check the same, and adapted to be moved bodily in the opposite direction to release the shuttle.
To accomplish this the spring is mounted in a carrier socket l9 and has an end projecting out therefrom for engagement with a button ill on the side of the binder. This socket is fast on one arm of a bell-crank 28 pivoted on'a pin 25 at the top of the bracket. The construction is such that the spring is supported with its aXis extending transversely to the path of the shuttle.
The other arm of the bell-crank is connected by a link 27 with the upper end of a lever 29 pivoted intermediate its ends on one of the bolts 13 referred to. The lower end of this lever is connected by a link 31 with a stud 33 projecting outward from an actuating arm 35 pivoted on a bolt 37 entered through an elongated slot 39 in said bracket. This arm is curved inward and presents a shoe 41 having a Wear facing &3 for engagement with the outer side of the picker stick beneath the lay beam.
To limit the inward swing of said actuatingarm a stop to may be mounted on said bracket and be engaged by said arm. This will insure arrest of said arm at the same place after successive shuttle throwing movements of the picker stick and thus the arm will always move equal distances in insure uniform operation.
Suitable means may be provided for varying the tensions of the spring. In the present instance of the invention this is accomplished byforming the link 31 referred to of memebrs 31 and 31 connected by a-screw 47 having end portions oppositely threaded to said members. A nut-49 fast on said screw. facilitates adjustment thereof and a nut 51 bears against the end of one of said members and serves to lock the screw "in its different positions of adjustment.
When the screw is adjusted to lengthen the checking the picker stick and shuttle andlink, through the connections described, the spring will be bodily adjusted outward to; release the tension on the binder; and when the screw is adjusted to shorten the link, the spring will be bodily ad usted inward to increase the tension on thebinder.
The efi'ect of the spring may be further varied by altering the distance of the point of engagement of the spring with the binder, from the fulcrum pin 9 of the binder. This may be accomplished by loosening the bolts 13 and adjusting the bracket along said bolts and then tightening said bolts.
The angleof the shoe of the actuating arm may be varied by adjusting its pivot bolt37 in the elongated slot 39 receiving said bolt.
In use, the shuttle is thrown across the lay and side swipes the binder and is slightly checkedthereby and strikes the picker stick. The latter is swung thereby sharply outward against the shoe of the actuating arm. This rocks said arm in a clockwise direction and through the connections described, move the socket and the spring carried thereby inward transversely to the path of the shuttle. This causes the spring to press against the binder and forces the latter againstthe shuttle, thereby effectively checking the latter.
WVhen the picker stick starts to swing to the right to throw the shuttle back across the lay, it immediately moves away from the shoe of the actuating arm. This immediately releases the tension on the spring and the latter reacting against the binder, through the connections described, shifts the actuating arm shoe in a contra-clockwise direction until limited by engagement with its stop. The shoe is now in a position where it is in readiness to receive the next impact of the picker stick and again check the shuttle as described. I
The prompt release of the spring at the inception of the throw by the picker stick leaves the shuttle free and unimpeded so that it may receive the full force and eflect of the picker stick.
Since the actuating arm swings in the plane of movement of the picker stick it does not press the stick laterally. As a re- 'sult the stick can be relied upon to strike the shuttle squarely and throw the same across the lay without escape from the lay.
The device described is simple, strong, durable and easily applied and adjusted. The shuttle check may be applied to either the front or rear of the lay and may act on another part than the binder if desired.
Having described an embodiment of the invention without limiting the same thereto,

1. In a loom, the combination with a shuttlebox, of a picker stick, and a shuttle I with said arm.

connections between said spring and actuating member for moving the former from the latter, and a bracket on the lay carrying all of the parts of the shuttle check.
4. In a loom, the combination with a shuttle-box, of a picker stick; and a shuttle check comprising a spring movable transversely to the path of the shuttle, a bellcrank carrier for said spring, an actuating arm positioned to be engaged by the picker stick, and connecting means for transmitting movement from said actuating arm to said bell-crank carrier.
5. In a loom, the combination with the lay, of a shuttle boX thereon, a picker stick; and
means for checking the movement of the shuttle comprising a binder pivoted on said lay, a bracket mounted on the lay, a coil spring for pressing said binder toward the shuttle, a socket for said spring, a bellcrank pivoted on said bracket and carrying said socket, a lever pivoted on said bracket, a link connecting said bell-crank and lever, an arm in the path of the picker stick pivoted on said bracket, a link connecting said lever and arm, and a stop on said bracket for limiting movement of said arm.
