Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1917.
Application filed June 19, 1816. Serial No. 104,421.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMEs IRA GARDINER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, county of King, and State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Door Display Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a practical, conveniently operative and effectual display or advertising device in association with a door and arranged therewith so that it will be operated by opening and closing the door.
The chief feature of the invention consists in. mounting such advertising device on a door near the free edge thereof so that when the door is opened, the display or advertising device will move directly in front of the face of the person who opens the door. In the particular form herein shown, upon the first opening movement of the door, the display or advertising device will move in front of the face of the person opening the door and of necessity attracts his attention. No additional means is necessary to call the persons attention to the display or advertising device. Things of the kind have been associated with the hinged edge of the door so as to be operated as the door openedand closed, but they have not been located in the right place to. accomplish their object in a practical and effectual way. Therefore, in addition to the foregoing this invention consists in means for mounting the advertising or display device at the opening side of the door.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and p the following description and claims: 7
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the outside of a door closed. Fig. 2 i an elevation of the upper part of the door with the door open. Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the upper part of the door with the door open. Fig. i is an elevation of a fragmentary portion of the door and door casing and said device with one wall of the case of the device removed to show the interior construction, and said parts being shown when the display arm is in the upper position or position when the door is closed. Fig. 5 is the same as Fig. 4 with through the lass panels of the door.
the parts in position when the display arm is horizontal and the door open. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5. F ig. 7 is a section on the line 77 of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a cross section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 5. of the operative part of the mechanism, parts being broken away.
A door 10 and door casing 11 are shown, the door having a glass panel 12 and being hinged by hinges 13 and having av bolt 14. The invention, however, is not limited to any particular type of door and it may be used in connection with a gate or like devlce.
A display plate 15 having on it any suit able words, letters or numerals, is secured to a display arm 16 which is fulcrumed on a pin 17 in a case 18 secured to the door near its open edge and preferably above the knob and about on the level of a mans face. The display arm is almost counterbalanced by a weight 19 which is turned at right angles so that as the display arm swings down from the vertical position shown in Fig. 4 to. the horizontal position shown in Fig. 5, the leverage of said weight will be gradually and somewhat increased. The case 18 has a slot 20-through the curved corner of the wall thereof through which the display arm 16 extends and oscillates. The ends of said Slot may be utilized to limit the display arm in its upward and downward movements. The upward. movement of the display arm is stopped before it becomes entirely vertical, in the form shown in the first seven figures, and it is held in an inclined position by the actuating means hereafter specified, and when said actuating means is released, the display arm and plate move down by gravity from the vertical position, shown in Fig. 1, to the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2. This happens when the door is open and thedisplay plate moves down in front of the face of the person opening the door so as to display the advertisement thereon The inner side of the display plate may have a different sign on it from the outer side.
One means for raising the display arm from the horizontal to a vertical position is shown in Figs. 4 to 7. A pivot bar 25 is secured to the display arm and extends there from at right angles substantially and has 2. turned pivot end which extends loosely Fig. 9 shows a modified form through a slot 26 extending longitudinally in the upper end of a lever 27. As seen in Fig. 4:, the lever 27 is 'fulcrumed-at its lower end by a pin 28 to the case 18 and between its ends it is pivoted by a pin 29 to a bolt 30 which is mounted in the case 18 and is shaped very much like the usual door bolt.
It operates in suitable guideways 31 and its outer end is beveled at 32 like a door bolt so that as the door is closed the beveled surface 32 of thedoor will engage a plate 33 secured to the door casing, as shown in Fig. 7 and be forced inward by said plate 33 from the positionshown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Figs. 4 and 7 This inward movement of the bolt 30 through the intermediate mechanism described actuates the display arm 16 and moves the display plate to its upper and idle position.
With the display plate substantiallycounterbalanced by the weight .19, very little force is required to operate the device and,
' therefore, it can be operated at the front edge of the door instead of the rear edge and without being inconvenient or requiring any special force or attention. The movement 7, of the display plate is very striking as a per son-approaching the door to open it is not aware of a display platebeing mounted on the inside of the door and when it falls down in front of his face, he is astonished temporarily and hence the advertisement is impressed on his memory.
In the modified forms as shown in Fig. 9 the bolt 30 extends a part of the way through the casing 18 so as to slide longitudinally, in the guideway 31. Secured at the inner end-of the bolt 30 there is an arm 86 having teeth on the'upper end thereof adapted to engage the teeth on the segment 1 I 35 which is pivoted at 17 to the display arm 16 which extends outwardly through the easing and has the sign, secured to the end thereof. Mounted between the arm 36 and the back side of the casing 18 there is a compression spring 37, which holds the bolt in its outward position, against the force of gravity exerted on the sign. When the door is closed as shown in Fig. 9 the plate on the door frame forces the bolt rearwardly against the spring so that the'sign is elevated in position shown in Fig. 1.
The invention claimed is: V 1. A door display device inclndingthe combination with a door and door casing, of a display devlce mounted on said door near its opening edge and provided with a movable bolt for controlling the operation of the display arm extends and in which it is pivoted, said case having a slot through which said display arm extends and is moved, and means controlled by the door casing when the door is moved to or from its closed position for operating said display arm, the ends of the slot in the case being arranged so as to limit the upward and lower movements of said display arm.
3. A door display device including the combination with a door and door casing, of '8 i a display device secured. adjacent the opening edge of said door, a movable bolt having a beveled end, a plate on said casing in position to be engaged by the beveled end of said bolt, whereby said bolt will be forced inwardly, a display plate pivoted to said device so as to extend outwardly therefrom, and means connected with said bolt for engaging said plate, whereby said plate will be operated when said bolt is engaged.
4. A door display device including the combination with a door and door casing, of a display device mounted on said door adjacent the opening edge thereof, a movable A bolt having a beveled end, a plate on said casing in a position to be engaged by the beveled end of said bolt whereby said bolt will be forced inwardly, a display plate pivoted to said device so as to extend outwardly therefrom, a "guidcway in which said bolt is in adapted to reciprocate, a lever pivoted to said device and to said bolt adapted to engage said display plate whereby the operation of said bolt will operate said plate, and means for returning said bolt to its normal position.
In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
JAMES IRA GARDINER.
