i; To dll 'whom 'may concer/n. Be it known that we? and, SAMUEL C. Krrrrnmr United States, reeidi c county of Labette i Kennen have invented certain and 'useful n'il Provements in Attache n l Engines, of which the tiene cation. 10 This invention relates to atiiiehments for traction engines propelled, bj. im, lene, or other types of eninee and it is the i, aim of the 4invention to provide en attach gment which may be reediiy e .inbled with 115 the ordinary traction engine e l); Mmmm ci? the lifting or'otherwise moving objects, as for f l iexel-npl` oilfwell easinge, pun-ip lines, pump rods,` ete.
The invention has in View the production of an attachment for the purpose stated which 'may be readily controlled and which, Twill vbe adapted to be driven from the en e Shaft of the tractor and which will enrmeans 'whereby the sp ^fl et which the vWindi'nggdrum of the etti-ich ent is rotated -fmafy be varied to suit the ojerator of the machine.
Another aim of the iiwe'i'vtinr ie provide means `whereby the cable wound upon the "said drum may be quickly nnwolmd there i from and'wound thereon et enydeeired rate of speed. i W u i. ' et it may be thrown into an View of one of the ncing; the trame of a relation to the frame 'si eeponh'ig and like te are referred "',.lowing deficrip and indi* muted in eil lthe vierve of the accompanying fi e Characters.
ne ,is in cated in general 5 character T and 'the iframe e 'includes side frameiorif e indicated bythe numeral "i j extended directly forwardly i .ei oy 'the numeral :3, they being snp'oo et their forward ends by the forward el eis 4 of the traction en ine and at their rear ends by the rear Whee s 5; As li doce not enter into type, the engine .eiwit being indicated by braced with relation to' the flume-ofthe` tractor and in orderthnt A,the frame members 8 may be bracedy with relation to eachother, a cross pieoef 10 extends between the frame members 8 near their 4rear ends and 'supports uprights 11 to each of which is connectedthe ,rer end niiet truss rod 12, the forward end of eeclrrodbeing secured `as i if* 3 ie mounted roi' shiftln l; i frame members being diverged near their et L3 to the freine member 8 et the res ective side of the attachment. A truss ro 14 is secured at its forward end to the u' pel.` end of eeeh'ofithe nprights 11 and t ese truss rods are secured at their rear ends as at 15 to the diverging portions 12 of the side members of the frame of the tractor.
Mounted in suitable bearings 16 supported upon the side members 8 near thelr forward ends are the trunnions 'of a winding drum indicated by the numeral 17 and one of these trunnions extends beyond its bearing and has fixed thereon a sprocket gear 18 over which is passed a `sprocket chain 19. The chain 19 passes also overa sprocket gear 20 fixed upon a shaft 21 which is mounted in suitable bearings 22 upon the side members 8 rearwardly of the Winding drum and adjacent the rear ends of the said members 8. A sprocket gear 23 is also fixed upon the shaft 21 beside the gear 20 and trained thereover is a Sprocket chain 24 this chain passing also over the gear 25 which is loosely mounted upon the. engine shaft at the correspondin side of vthe frame and beside the fly Whse? 7. The numeral 26 indicates a brake4 drum, and arranged within,v this drum and designed to clutch the sprocket 25 with the engine shaft is a suitable clutch indicated in general by the numeral 27. Inasmuch as this clutch may I Windel' scribed to the be of any of the ordinary types it will not be specificallyillustrated' nor described. owever, the arms which lead from the members of the clutch and lwhich are indicated by `the numeral 28 are connected. to the intermediate portion of ,an operating lever 29 which at its forward end is pivoted as at 30 to. a bracket 31 secured upon the portion 2 of the corresponding one ofthe side members 1 of the frame of the tractor. A s `shown`in the drawings the lever 29 extends rearwardly in convenient position for operation by the workman in charge of the machine.
It will now be understood thatl when the vlever 29 is swung inwardly so as to clutch thesprocket gear 25 with the engine shaft, and the engine is in operation, power will be transmitted through the aring above de- Winding gum 17 and the cable which 1s indicated by the numera 32 will be drum and will serve to elevate or pull or otherwise act upon the work to be done.
A brake band 33'isapplied to the brake drum 26 and the ends of this drum are connected in'the ,ordinary manner with the pivoted end of a lever 34 which lever ex tends rearwardly and is provided with a foot piece 35 upon which pressure may be applied for the purpose of tighteningr the band about the drum. In this manner therefore the operator of the machine may controlthe speed of rotation of the winding drum V17 and consequently the speed at which the cable is wound thereon.
In order' that the winding dru 'the pur- -swivel bolt 42 is fitted wound upon the said pose of unwinding the cable 32, means is provided which will now be described. Fixed upon that end of the shaft 21 opposite the end which carries 20 and 23, is a pulley 36 over which is passed a belt 37 this belt pulley 38 fixed upon one end of the shaft 39. The shaft 39 is mounted in suitable bearings 40 upon a bed piece 41 which is disposed to rest upon the portions 2 of the side members 1 oi the tractor frame and in order that the bed piece may be supported in such manner as to permit of its for a purpose to be presently explained, a through the bed piece and through that one of the side members 2 adjacent that end of the pulley 38 is lixed. of the shaft 39 there is fixed a wheel having a friction peripheral surface, this wheel being indicated by the numeral 43 and the said wheel is located immediately in advance of and close to the fly wheel 7. It will nowbe Upon the other end understood that when the clutch 27 is out. and the sprocket gear 25 is disconnected passing also over a smaller the shaft upon which' the sprocket gears being swung slightly riphery of the wheel 43 into contact with the periphery of the dy wheel of the engine whereby power will be transmitted through the belt gearing just described and through the sprockets 18 and 20 and chain 19 to the drum 17 rotating the said drum in a direction the reverse of that in vwhich it is 'ro tated through `the gearing first described. It will also be understood that after the ca ble has been paid out the desired len h, the bed piece 41 may be swung forwar y so as to bring the wheel 43 out of contact with the liy wheel 7 thereby stopping the r0tation of the drum. In order that the bed piece may be shifted in the manner stated an arm 44 extends from the free or lastdle 47 which may be grasped for the purpose of shifting the rod in forward or rear dlrection for the purpose of swinging the bed piece. In order that the .operatingrod 46 may be so. supported asto at he may if desired simultaneously operate the lever 29 ad rod 46 ina convenient manner, the said lever 29 is provided with an upstanding bracket arm 48 having et its upper end a bearing portion 49 throu which the rod 46 may readily slide. It will be under-' all times be in' convenient reach of the operator and so that masas? B` tachment may be securely anch ete for lateral strain,
