Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that 1, PETER D. BURKE, a citizen. of the United States, and a resldent of Roswell, in the county of Roswell and tain novel features of construction whereby the clevis-pin is removably, yet securely locked inthe clevis.
Another object of the invention is the production of animproved locking clevis ineX- pensive in construction and thoroughly dependable in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention, consisting in the construction, combination and novel arrangement of parts, will be fully'understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clevis constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, the pin being shown in section; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 41 is a fragmentary longitudinal section through the locking eye of the clevis; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary inverted plan of the same; and Fig. '6 is a fragmentary inverted perspective view of the same.
Although I have illustrated and hereinafter described the preferred form of the invention, I would not be understood as being limited to the specific structure chosen for illustration, for various alterations and modifications, in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Referring, now, to the illustrations, 7 is the clevis-bow of spring material and in cluding arms, 8, and 9 yieldable toward and from each other.
The end portion of the arm, 8, is provided with an eye 10, which normally incloses a clevis-pin, 11, the lower end of which is inclosed by a socket, or recess, 12, in the arm, 9.
The eye, 10, is provided with a radial slot, 13, which permits the passage of a radial stop-stud, 14, on the pin; and the inner periphery of the said eye is formed with spaced notches, 15, in the face of the eye ad- Jacent the socket and arranged substantially longitudinally of the axis of the eye, forming segments, 16, 17, 18 and 19. The segments are preferably so formed, or cut, that their ends are disposed at gradually varying distances from the side of the eye adjacent the arm, 9. That is, from the segment, 16, the end of each successive segment is closer to the under side of the eye.
The stop-stud'is so positioned, with respect to the seated end of the pin, that the stop-stud will be in the same plane as the notches when the arms of the bow are normal.
In applying the device, the pin is so turned that the stud will pass through the slot, 13. The arm, 8, is then sprung outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 3, whereupon the pin may be turned to pass the stud under the segment, 16. The arm is then released and the stop-stud engaged in the notch between the segments, 16 and 17. Should the arm, 8, be sprung a sufficient distance, the pin may be turned until the stud engages the segment 18 or 19 and accordingly be received by another one of the notches when the arm is released. Should the arm be released when the stop-stud is not alined with one of the notches, obviously, the stud will be engaged by the end of one of the segments, and upon further turning of the pin, the stud will be engaged with one of the notches.
Obviously, to remove the pin, the arm, 8,
must again be sprung outwardly to permit rotation of the pin to bring the stop-stud into registration with the slot, 13.
The pin may be provided with a thumb grip, 20, for conveniently manipulating the pin; and the end of the arm, 8, is formed with a finger-hook, 21, for raising the arm.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. An article of the class described com-- prising a clevis-bow having two arms, one yieldable from the other, and a clevis-pin, the yieldable arm being provided with an eye to normally inclose the cleVis-pin, and the other of said arms being enga-geable With the clevis-pin to prevent laterahand longitudinal movement of the clevis-pin in the direction of said latter arm, the clevis-pin haying a radial part, and said eye having a radial slot-to permit longitudinal movement of the clevis-pin When the cleyis-pin is so turned that the radial part will pass through saidslot, and the face of the .eye adjacent the vseemid-described arm being provided With aseries of notches arranged around'the inner periphery of the eye and engageable with the radial part toiiprevent turning and longitudinalmovement .ot' the .cle vis-.-'pin in the direction of the latter arm when said latter. arm' is in normal position, and disengageabl'e therefrom when said latternarm is sprung from the other-arm.
