Description

W. M. CONGER Improvement in Dust Pans j 'N0,123,331,. Patented Feb 6,1872.
UNITED STATES FFIGE IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-PANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,331, dated February 6, 1872.
Specification describing an Improved Dust- Pan invented by WALTER M. GONGER, of Newark, New Jersey.
The invention consists in a combination of features or parts giving the structure new and valuable qualities. The dust-pan will stand alone upon the floor in a proper position to receive the dust, and is provided with a high back or partial top flaring forward, so as to arrest and catch the dirt thrown upon and across it by vigorous sweeping.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification.
Figure l is a section on the line S S in Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures.
A is a slightly curved base-piece or main body, corrugated longitudinally to increase its stiltness. A is an inclined front formed in one piece therewith, and presenting a straight front edge adapted to match tightly to the floor or carpet. B is the ordinary back, and B B are the ordinary sides of the dust-pan. O is an ordinary handle. I provide a back-leg, D,
formed of sheet metal properly cut and bent, which holds the back of the dust-pan up in such position that the front inclined portion or lip A is presented to the floor when the structure stands alone, and I provide a Wide flaring top, E, curved down at the ends and soldered firmly to the parts below, which partially covers the back side of the base A, and serves as a wall to arrest the sweeping of any material across. G is a brace soldered to the upper side of the handle and connecting it strongly with the top of the ordinary back B. I can extend this brace up to brace the flaring top E, if found necessary. I propose also to attach spring clips to retain a small brush on the upper or under side of the flaring top E, if desired.
I claim--- The combination of the body A, inclined lip A at the front, leg D at the back, and the flaring -hood E above, with the ordinary or any suitable sides and back, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
