I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN M. THoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grant, in the county of Grayson and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a padlock and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby in order to unlock the shackle, it is necessary to correctly manipulate certain buttons upon the casing.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a locking dog pivoted witlnn the casing and normally engaging the free end of the shackle, and which is held against movement by locking means, until said looking means are so positioned that the dog may be moved rearwardly, freeing the shackle.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a locking arm pivotally supported by an operating lever, which 1s adapted to be swung upon its pivot to permit the locking arm to move downwardly allowing the locking dog to be disengaged from the shackle.
A further object of this invention is the provision of means for holding the operating lever downwardly so that the dog may be moved out of engagement with the shackle.
A further object of this invention 1s the provision of means for freeing the operating lever to automatically return to its normal position forcing the locking arm into engagement with the locklng dog, thus fastening the shackle against movement.
A still further object of this lnvention is the provision of stated character, rable and efficient, and which may be manufacturedand sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will a padlock of the above which shall be simple, du
be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my inyention, reference is to be had to the followmg description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a padlock, constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the means for holding the locking dog in engagement with the free end of the shackle, and
Fig. 4: is a transverse sectional view illustrating the means for mounting the plurality of levers within the casing.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a casing having pivoted within an opening 2, thereof, a shackle 3, as illustrated at 4. The shackle 3 is of substantially U-shaped formation and has its free end provided with a notch 5 and a shoulder 6 at its free end. A catch 7 has one end reduced as shown at 8 for reception within the notch 5 of the shackle 3. The catch 7 is carried by a pin 9 that is slidably mounted in a slot 10 of the casing 1 and has secured to its ends buttons 11. A coiled spring 12 is interposed between a stop 13 and the catch 7 whereby the reduced end 8 of the catch is normally urged in the notch 5 of the shackle at all'times. In order to free the shackle, the buttons 11 are slid upon the casing, causing the pin 9 to travel in the slot 10, compressing the spring 12 and withdrawing the reduced end 8 of the catch 7 from the shackle. When the shackle 3 has been freed from the catch 7, it is withdrawn from the casing by a spring 14:, which is secured to a stop 13 and to the shackle as shown at 15.
A locking dog 16 is pivoted within the casing, as at 17 and has its free end provided with a shoulder 18 adapted to engage the shoulder 6 upon the shackle 3, as illustrated in Fig. 3. A leaf spring 19 is bent about a pin 20 carried by the casing 1 and has one of its ends disposed about the pivoted end of the locking dog 16 and inserted within a notch 22 thereof for normally forcing the free end of the dog into engagement with a stop 2A located within the casing, thus properly positioning the locking dog so that upon insertion of the free end of the shackle 3 within the casing, the shoulders 6 and 8 upon the shackle and dog interlock with each other. A pin 25 is carried by the free end of the locking dog 16 and extends through a slot 26, in the casing and has secured to its end, a button 27, whereby upon sliding the button 27 from the casing 1, the locking dog is swung upon its pivot 17 against the tension of the spring 19, disengaging the shoulder 18 thereof from the shoulder 6 upon the shackle 3.
An operating lever 28 is pivoted within the casing 1 on pivot pin 29. The lever 28 is normally supported in a horizontalposition' as shown in Fig. 3 by a leaf spring 30 bearing against one end and which spring is bent about a pin 31, carried by the casing and secured to the casing as at 32. A pin 33 is carried by the end of the operating lever 28 on which the free end of the leaf *spring 30 bears and extends through a slot 34' in the casing 1 and has secured thereon, a button 35. The pin 33 is normally forced into engagement with the lower wall of the slot 34 as shown in Fig. 3, thus limiting the movement of the operating lever 28 in one'direction and causing the same to normally maintain a horizontal position under the influence of the spring '30. V
The other end of the operating lever 28 "is provided with a recess 36, which is adapted to receive a lug 37 pin 38. The pin 38 extends 39 in the casing 1 and has carried upon a through a slot secured to its 7 end, a button 40, whereby upon moving the free end in engagement "its pivot 17 to free the swing the locking lug 37 within the recess'36 by the button 40, the operating lever 28 is looked upon its pivot 29 against the tension of the spring 30. A locking arm 41 is pivoted to the operating lever 28 as shownat 42 and has its with the locking dog 16. The free end of the locking arm 41 also engages a guide 43, which prevents the locking arm 41 from being swung upon its pivot 42 in case some one endeavors to dog 16 upon its pivot, thus it will be noted that when the operating lever 28 is in a substantially horizontal position, the locking arm 41 will prevent the locking dog 16 from being swung upon shackle. As the lug 37 is moved within the recess 36 of the operating lever 28, the operating leveris rocked upon its pivot moving the locking arm 41 downwardlypermitting the locking their ends contacting each other and provided with alining slots to receive the lug p The opposite ends of the releasing levers are provided with pins as shown in Fig.
pin 20 engages the 3 that extend through the walls of the easing 1 and upon the opposite side of the casing from the buttons heretofore mentioned and have secured thereto, buttons 47. lVhen the lug 37 is moved within the recess 36 of the operating lever 28 to swing the same downwardly on its pivot 29, the lug 37 engages the innermost wall of the alining slots of the releasing levers and upon sliding either one of the releasing levers by the respective button 47 attached thereto, the lug 37 will be disengaged from the recess 36, freeing the operating lever 28 permitting the same to return to a substantially horizontal position under the influence of the spring 30, moving the locking arm 41 upwardly in engagement with the guide 43 and the locking dog 16, holding said dog 16 in engagement with the shoulder 6 upon the shackle 3.
In operation, when it is desired to re lease the shackle 3, from the casing 1 of the lock, the button 40 is slid upon the easing in the direction indicated by the arrow moving the lug 37 into engagement with the recess 36 moving the operating lever 28 upon its pivot 29, moving the locking arm 41 downwardly. lVhen the locking arm 41 has been moved downwardly, the button 27 is moved in a corresponding direction with the button 40 and as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, it disengages the locking dog 16 from the lug of the shackle.
'The catch 7 is then moved by button 11. against the tension of the spring 12 freeing the reduced end 8 thereof from the notch 5 of the shackle, which shackle then moves to an open position under the influence of the spring 14. The locking dog 16 returns into engagement with the stop 24 as soon as the button 27 has been released by the operator, positioning itself ready to receive the shoulder 6 on the shackle 3 when inserted within the casing. After the shackle has been again moved into engagement with the locking dog 16, by operating any one of the buttons 47, located upon the reverse side of the casing from the buttons 11, 27 and 40, the respective releasing lever connected thereto moves downwardly disengaging the lug 37 from the recess 36 in the operating lever 28, permitting the operating lever 28 to return to its normal position, forcing the locking arm 41 into engagement with the guide 43 and the locking dog, thus preventing the locking dog from being swung upon its pivot. The end 48 of the spring 19 after passing around the alining ends of the releasing levers 44, 45 and 46 for the purpose of returning the releasing levers to their normal positions after they have been slid to cause the lug 37-to engage the recess 36 of the releasing lever 28 k While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus what I claim is:
1. A lock comprising a casing, a spring actuated locking dog pivoted within said casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing and having its free end notched, said notched end of the shackle adapted to be inserted within the casing and in engagement with the locking dog, an operating lever pivoted within said casing, a pin secured to one end of the operating lever and extending through the casing, a button carried by said pin, a spring connected to the casing and abutting against the last named end of the lever for normally supporting said lever in a substantially horizontal position, said lever having its other end recessed, a looking arm pivoted to said locking lever and engaging the locking dog, a pin carried by said casing, and a button secured to said pin and located upon the interior of the casing, a lug carried by said pin and adapted to be moved within the recess of the operating lever to move said operating lever downwardly against the tension of the spring to disengage the locking arm from the locking dog, means for disengaging the locking dog from the shackle.
2. A look comprising a casing, a spring actuated. locking dog pivoted within said casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing and having its free end notched, said notched end of the shackle adapted to be inserted within the casing in engagement with the locking dog, an operating lever pivoted within said casing, means for normally supporting said lever in a horizontal position, a locking arm pivoted tosaid lever and engaging the locking dog, a guide formed upon said casing and engaging the free end of the locking arm, a pin connected to the operating lever and extending through the casing, a button secured to said pin forv rocking said operating lever upon its pivot, means carried by the casing ior engagement with one end of the operating lever to hold said operating lever in a substantially inclined position to disengage the described my invention,

3. A lock comprising a casing, a spring actuated locking dog pivoted within said casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing and having its free end notched, said notched end, of the shackle adapted to be inserted within the casing in engagement with the locking dog, an operating lever pivoted within said casing, adapted to [normally maintain a horizontal position, a locking arm pivoted to said lever and engaging the locking dog, said lever having a recess at one end, a lug slidably mounted upon said casing and adapted to be moved within the recess to hold the lever in an inclined position to disengage the locking arm from the locking dog, a plurality of releasing levers slidably mounted within said casing and having one of their ends in alinement and slotted to receive the lug or disengaging the lug from the recess in the operating lever to permit the operating lever to return to its horizontal position.
4. A look comprising a casing, a spring actuated locking dog pivoted within said casing, a shackle pivoted to said casing, and having its free end notched, said notched end of the shackle adapted to be inserted within the casing to engage the locking dog, an operating lever pivoted within said casing and normally maintaining a horizontal position, a locking arm pivoted to said lever and engaging the locking dog, means for swinging the locking lever into an inclined position, a lug slidably mounted in said casing and adapted to engage the locking lever to hold it in an inclined position, re-
leasing levers slidably mounted within said casing and having slots in their ends, sai slots in alinement with each other to receive the lug, and a spring connected to the casing and bearing against the slotted ends of the releasing levers to return them to their nor mal position after the releasing levers have been operated to disengage the lug from the operating levers.
