GUARD FOR THE SCROLLS OF SPINNING-MULES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS MILLS, a subject'of the Kingof Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Middleton J unction, in the county of Lancaster, England,
have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Guards for the Scrolls of Spinning-h Iules, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to guards for the scrolls on the back shafts of spinning mules and has for its object to provide an improved guard especially applicable for end scrolls and which, while affording an eflicient protection, will permit of access to the scroll for the purpose of piecing the scroll band or rope when broken or other purposes without removing it or any part of it and which also can be readily fitted A guard in accordance with this invention comprises a main or inclosing part closed at the top, bottom and rear and open at the front and adapted to inclose the scroll, and a front part adapted to close the open front of the main or inclosing part when the guard is fitted in position, said main or inclosing part being provided with an opening fitted with a door or cover for giving access to the interior of the guard.
The accompanying drawing illustrates one form of guard according to the invention, Figure 1 being a perspective view of the complete guard, Fig. 2 a perspective view of the main part and Fig. 3 a like view of the front part. Fig. at is a transverse section and Fig. 5 a longitudinal section and Fig. 6 a plan of the guard.
Referring to the drawing, a is the main part of the guard and 7) the front part thereof. The main part a is of more or less U shape in cross section with the opening at the front. The. ends of the part a are slotted at c to clear the back shaft and enable the part to be placed thereon or thereover to inclose the scrolls.
The front part .7) has its edges flanged over and is fitted in the open front of the main part a, when the latter has been arranged in position on the back shaft, to complete the inclosure of the scrolls. The front part b is secured to the main part a by set screws (1. Holes or slots are provided in the front part b for the passages of the scroll bands or ropes to and from the scrolls inclosed bv the guard. These holes are pref e13 with Specification of Letters Patent.

"with rearward extensions f which lie against the inside of the sides of the main part a and close the slots 0 therein.
To permit of access to the interior of the guard I provide an opening 9 in the wall of the main part a at the top thereof, and an opening 9 in the said wall at the bot tom of the main part, and fit such openings with doors h and 72K The door it is preferably hinged to the main part a at and made in two parts hinged together at 71? as shown. The door 71/ slides in grooves k The doors 71 71 are secured when closed by set screws m, m which pass through slots or notches n, n in the doors and screw into the wall. of the main part a. The ends of the set screws m, m are riveted over so that they cannot be completely unscrewed and possibly lost or their replacement neglected. By partly unscrewing the set screws m, m the doors h, 7& can be opened.
For supporting the guard in proper position in use the main part (a may be provided with arms or brackets 0, 2), adapted for attachment to the adjacent end frame of the mule.
The guard is preferably made of planished steel but it may be made of any other a ppropriate material.
hat I claim is 1. A guard for the scrolls 0n the back shafts of spinning mules, comprising an open main part adapted to be fitted on or over the back shaft and the scroll thereon to be guarded, a closing part adapted to Qose said main part, means for securing said closing part to said main part, openings fitted with doors in said main part for giving access to the interior of the guard, means for securing said doors when closed, and openings in said closing part for the passage of the scroll bands.
2. A guard for the scrolls on the back shafts of spinning mules, comprising an open main part adapted to be fitted on or over the back shaft and the scroll thereon to be guarded, a closing part adapted to close said. main part, means for connecting said main and closing parts, openings fitted "with. doors in said main part for giving ac the interior or the guard, screws T for securing said doors and adapted to coact with notches therein and screwing into said mainpartr and incapable of removal Ktherefrom, and openings in said closing part for the passage of the scroll bands. 1 3. A 'guard for the scrolls on the back shafts of spinning mules, comprising an open main part adapted to be fitted on or ,OVQf the back shaft and the scroll thereon toqbe guarded and of approximately U- shape in cross-section, aclosing part adaptedt'o be fitted to close said main part, means Copies o f t his patent may ,be obtained for for connecting said closing and main parts,
