To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brake-Head Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of brake heads for railway car brake equipment. It pertains specifically to an improvement in the head construction which is designed to retain the hanger, upon which the brake'head is supported, against movement out of the hanger opening in the head.
As is well known in railway brake construction, removable shoes are employed on the brake head, and are retained in position by a suitable removable means such as a resilient key member. The brake head is supported from a proper portion of the truck by means of a hanger, which, as in a well known form of brake head, may be in the form of a U- shaped member adapted to support the brake head on its transverse or connecting portion, which portion is insertible into the transversely extending hanger opening in the head, through the open front side thereof. The brake shoe, when in place, closes this opening, but leaves a space .between the open side of the hanger opening and the rear face of the brake shoe. As a result, the hanger may sometimes slip out of the hanger opening and, while the brake head will not be released from the hanger, the accuracy of the brake movement will be impaired, due to the change in the point of pivotal connection.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated in Figure 1 an embodiment of my invention wherein a brake head is shown in side elevation, the compression member of the brake beam being shown in section, and a portion of the brake head adjacent the hanger opening being broken away. Q

Referring to these illustrations by the reference numerals, let it be understood that the numeral 1 designates the compression member of the brake beam, 2 designates generally the brake head, 4 designates the brake shoe, 5 designates the hanger, and 6 designates the key. The brake head he're shown is one of the conventional forms of M. C. B. standard construction. It is provided with the center hanger opening 2 and with the upper hanger opening 2. It also is formed with the customary shoe key lugs 2. to the head in the customary fashion, in which position it is retained by the key 6 which passes through the shoe key lugs 2 and the supplementary lug 4* on the shoe. The key is of resilient material suitably shaped to conform to the shoe, and when driven into position exercises yielding pressure against the shoe to hold it against rattling. The hanger 5 is adapted to have its transverse portion 5 seated in the upper hanger opening 2 The key is shaped to operate as a retaining member for the hanger when so positioned, by the provision of an offset portion 6 which extends rearwardly into position to close the open side of the hanger opening. In this position, it prevents the movement of the hanger out of the hanger opening, and thereby maintains the proper point of pivotal connection between the two. The lower extremity of the offset portion 6 is adapted to come against the top of the upper shoe key lug 2, and thereby determine the proper position of the key. This key is available for use in any place where a key of conventional form may be used, .and consequently does not require any new or special form of head.
I am aware that the device is susceptible of certain modifications without departing from the scope of the invention indicated in the accompanying claims.
