To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known'that I, YVALTER ScoT'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and and useful Improvement in Printing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to arrange a plurality of sets of printing mechanism and a plurality of folding mechanisms with their driving mechanisms so that any of them may be operated separately as independent printing and folding mechanisms, and also so that any of them may be coupled together to run at the same surface speed, whereby the webs printed by two or more of ,he sets of printing mechanism may be associated together and be led to a common folding mechanism or mechanisms. Another object is to provide for the case Where the press-room of an establishment may be too low to accommodate the usual construction of tiered machines, or which may be too short to allow of placing the printing machines end to end, reference being had by the phrase end to end to the case where the ends of the machine are the places, respectively where the rolls are placed and where the web or webs emerge, so that, with two such machines placed end to end, the Webs thereof travel either toward each other, or in the same direction, and in the same vertical plane, as they go to the folding-devices. In such case, the sets of printing-couples may lave their cylinders parallel, but they are not in alinement or cnl to end with respect to each other. Other objects will appear hereinafter during the course of description of the specific form of the invention illustrated in the drawing.
It is preferred to use what is known as quadruple nrachines, or machines having two sets of printing mechanism arranged one over the other and each set of printing mechanism wide enough to accommodate a web carrying four full-sized pages abreast thereon, and to have two quadruples placed with their printing and impression cylinders end to end, though more than two such'machines may be placed with their printing and impression cylinders end to end, and each machine may have more or less than two sets of printing mechanism r therein without departing from the broader Specificatidn of Letters Extent. In case the frames A B are not to be independent of each other, th ey may be formed or made into one frame in any suitable manner, as by distancepieccs or otherwise. The sets of printing-mechanism, where there is more than one set to the frame, may be geared together independently of the driving mechanism for that frame, and each set may be geared independently to the driving mechanism to be connected and disconnected at will independently of the other sets. There may be a plurality of independent drivingmechanisms for each frame, one of which driving-mechanisms gears with certain of the sets of printing-mechanism in that frame while another driving-mechanism gears with certain other of said sets of printing-mechanism, and so on, as in Letters Patent of the United States dated May 8,1906,and numbered 819,813. Instead of the longitudinal folders shown herein, which are suited to the case where the column-rules run around the form cylinders, folders'of the type illustrated in LettersPatent of the United States dated October 31,,
1893, and numbered 507,758, may be employed to meet the case where the column rules run along or lengthwise of the form cylinders. Cross association can be had in each case, as indicated by the lines 4., whereon the arrows indicate the direction of mo tion of the webs. For the purpose of sustainingthe webs in cross-associ. tion, guide rolls inay be provided. Where folders of the type last-mentioned above are employed, their cylinders are'p-laced parallel to the rolls t, as will be understood, whether or not these last be at right angles to the cylinders of the printing mechanism, the only essentialin this respect being that cross-association shall be had.
