-. Be it known that I, CHARLES M. Homms, a citizen of the United States, and a 'resi; dent of Jacksonville, and State of Florida, and Improved Device'for Con ling a Teleraph 'lransmit ter and Sen lag-Key, of which the following is a full, clear, and'exact description.
This invention relates to telegraph-apparatus and has to deal moreparticularly with a device for coupling a transmitter with a standard telegraph key.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a device of the character referred to which is reliable and ef'ficient in use, comparatively simple and inexpcusive to manufacture, and so design-led as to facilitate the have invented a new -connecting of thetransmitter with the sending key.

Referring to the drawing, A designates an ordinary sending key to which'is applied the coupling device B, which latter may be in the. form of an attachment, as shown,- 'or it may he-a permanent part of the framework of the. key. The key comprises the usual parts consisting of the frame or base 1; posts 2 that support the pivot screws 3, and jam nut 4-: the key lever 5 fulerumed on the pivot s .-rc-.;-.: and having; a contact 6 adapted to engage the contact 7 carried by but insulated from the. frame 1; binding posts or terminals 5 and 9, the first of which is insulated from the frame. 1 and electrically connected with the plate 1 I which is electrically connect-ed with the contact 7 and has a spring switch member ll with which 'engagcsthe. cut-out lever 12 fulcrumed at 13 on the frame 1, and on the main-lever 5 IS the. usual stop set screw 14.
The. coupling device in the present instance is shown as 'an attachmentand is adapted to be titted. to the. pivot s'iipportin posts 9. of the. key. Itcomprises a meta l socket 15 split axially into two parts ll) and 17 which are, mounted on a block of insulation l8 and therehyinsulated from each other. The. socket parts are fastened to a bridge-piece 19 which bears on top of the posts 2, and fastened thereto by any suitable manner, as for instance, angle clips 20 which are secured toth'e endsofthe bridge iiaco by screws 21 and which have slots 22, arms which straddle them their dcpcndin pivot screw 3, am the jam nuts lmlampthe clipef against the outer faces of the 'pivot posts 2. By this manner a good electrical connection is obtained between the half 16- of the. socket and the frame of the key. The 1nd t l (i. of the socket is fastened to the bridge by .icrews parts. It will thus 'he'seen that the section 16 of ihefsocket 15 is grounded 23 which clcctrimilly connect these binding; post for fllS-- on the frame of the key, and hence is connccted with the circuit wire 27, and the section '17 of the socket is connected with the other circuit wire 28 through the conductor 26 and -binding post 8. The plug 29, which is ins'ertihlc in the socket 15, 15 made in two parts 30 and 31 separated by a strip 32 of insulation which projects beyond opposite edges of the parts 30 and 31, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to engage between the sections 16 and 17, thus preventing the insertion of the plug, except in proper position. The parts 30 and 31 are fastened in a sleeve or carrier 33 and they are connected respectively with the wires tl-l and of the cord 36, which leads to the transmitter.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the :u-cr'ui'ipanying drawing, the. ad vantages of the construction and method of operation will he readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention apperl'ains, and while I have descrihed the principle ol operatiou, togcthcr with the device. which l now considerto be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrativeand that such. changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
