Description

NATHAN O. BOND, OF FAIRFAX OOURT-HOUSE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING=STOVES.
Specification forming pa1t cf Letters Patent N0. 123,225, dated J anuary 30, 1872.
' the attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sect-ion 0f the Same applied to a 000king-st0ve.
A may represent a cooking-stove 0f any snitable for1n having c0mmon holes 011 t0p for reception 0t' cooking vessels. B represents the bottom. C the sides, and D the t0p 0t' my smmner furnace. The bott01n B is made witl1 a sin g1e openin g, b, t0 fit over one 0f the st0v'el101es, and the opening b is prferably surrounded by a flange, b, to fitwithin the said hole in the stove. Tl1e t0p D 0f the furnace is provided with tw0 openings, (Z e, in 0110 0f which a stov -cover mag be placed, or one, or both of them, may receivecooking vessels. fis a draught aperture in the front end. g represents a deflector, whieh' I prefer t0 apply 0ver 01 within the opening b, to cause the heated gases t0 pass more fully in contact with a tea-ket-tle 0r cooking-vesse], which 1nay be sei: in the opening e. Tl1is defleotor may project above the surface 0f the bottom B, as shown in the drawing; but when the furnace is 0f moderate height, I preferthe art gto be in the common plane 0f the botto1n so as to avoid obstrueting the draught-the opening b being made of any necessary eapacity. h h are ridges formed 111 the bottom B t0 allow a draught under the fue1. The ent-ire furnace 1nay be cast in tw0 pieces ab moderate expense.
In operation, a fire is made in the furnace by introducing a small quantity ot' kindling w00d, charcoal 01 other ligh tfi1elthrough the opening d. The 0penings d and e and all the inlets t0 the st0ve being 110W elosed an active draught will be ca used through thefurnace, and owing to the proxin1it-y 0f the fire t0 the 000king vessels any necessary am0unt 0f cooking f01 a private family 1nay be perfor1ned with trifling expenditure 0f fuel and without any considerable radiation 0f heat.
One great advantage in my improved furnace is that the draught is ahnost horizontal instead of being in a downward directi0n, as is the case With m0st deviees 0f this dass.
VVhen used pon the front pzirtof a (30111111011 flat-top cooking-stove, enough heat will be co1nmunicated t0 a cooking vessel set in the stovehole in the rear 0f the opening b t0 warm any article 0f food.
I clain1 as 1ny invention- 1. The furnace B C D, constructed as herein deseribed, t0 adaptit for nse upon the t0p 0f a cookingstove t0 receive 0ne 01 n1ore 000king-vessels 011 t0p and t0 take the draught horizontally through an opening, f, at 0ne end, all substantially as and f0r the purposes Set f01th.
2. I claim the combination of the openings fand b, and deflector g, in a sum1ner t'urna0e, arranged t0 operate, substantially as und for the purposes set fort-h.
NATHAN O. BUND.
